Top ways to experience Soho
The area
Neighbourhood: Sheung Wan
Unlike most of Hong Kong’s other popular districts, Sheung Wan welcomes wanderers with an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Art galleries are plentiful and boutique cafés are tucked away in every side street in the sub district known as “PoHo.” Browse through the vintage clothing and handmade leather goods stores – it’s no surprise fashionistas flock to this area. History enthusiasts will be rewarded with sites of beautiful architecture, reflecting Sheung Wan’s past as one of the earliest settlements by British forces. As night falls, the entertainment scene reveals itself to be just as laid back with its private kitchens, speakeasies and underground bars dotted throughout the area. When in Sheung Wan, everyday feels like the weekend.

The area south of Hollywood Road (the Peak side) is called Soho. I took the escalator from Central to Mid-Levels and visited Shingo Katori's street art and Odate. There were many stylish restaurants and cafes and it was very lively.

I walked around Soho today on a walking tour. Sure it looked like a trendy area with many bars and massage places. Maybe at night it gets pumping the guide said.

This area comes alive at night, with bars and restaurants that mainly centre around Staunton and Elgin Streets. Although many tourist guides still direct people to Lan Kwai Fung, it’s been a long time since that has been a go-to area. Soho is a much nicer and livelier area to head to.
It’s easy to get to from Central, using the Mid-Levels escalator. You can step straight off the escalator at Staunton or Elgin St. Like all of Hong Kong, it’s very safe to walk around at night and part of the fun is strolling down the street and picking out places you like the look of. It's a popular area so if you haven’t booked in advance, Id recommend choosing a restaurant first and securing a table for later in the night. Then you are free to head off elsewhere for pre-dinner drinks.
Holy Fook and Chom Chom (upmarket Vietnamese) are two reliably good, fun places to eat. We also go regularly to Bouchon (French) and the more casual Motorino (pizza).
A cluster of fun bars has grown up around lower Peel Street in the last few years although they are frequently full, with people standing out on the street with a drink. Around the corner, back on Hollywood Rd, Quinary and La Cabane are smarter bars where you will get a seat.

This is a shopping and entertainment area. Previously, there was a small village on the site of Soho, until Henry VIII ordered the laying out of the royal park at the residence of Whitehall in 1536. The name Soho was assigned to the place in the 17th century; historians believe that the name comes from a hunting cry.

While many people go to Soho for an evening drink, I enjoyed having lunch there. In fact, I found myself stopping by for lunch almost every day of my trip. Thai one day, the next Cuban, then Mexican. At lunch time during the weekdays, the streets here were not very crowded, and most restaurants would have a set special. You get an a three course meal and (non-alcoholic) drink for a bargain. Overall, the food at the various restaurants was of good quality. Take the mid-levels up, then hike back down afterwards.

The best thing about this bar/restaurant area is that it’s all in the one spot. Enjoy the atmosphere and choose from any number of great bars and restaurants and any type of cuisine. It’s more upmarket than Lan Kwai Fung and its lively and fun all night long.
The main food area centres around Staunton and Elgin St, by the Mid-levels escalator.
A favourite restaurant of mine is Iberico (tapas style). The corner bar Stauntons is forever popular, often with standing room only. You’ll see the people spilling out onto the street corner – all a part of the atmosphere.
TIPS:
• Many places have a happy hour around 5pm-8pm
• A lot of places offer good value lunch meal deals between certain hours.
• Like all of Hong Kong, it’s very safe to walk around at night
• There is more to the wider Soho area, with antique shops, art galleries, little lanes and streets running up and down the hill, boutiques, stalls with trinkets….
• One warning – the path alongside the escalator is steep and it’s easy to slip. Take it easy if you are in high shoes.
GETTING THERE:
• You can walk from Central. From the MTR, take Exit D2. Get on the Mid-levels escalator at Queens Rd & get off at Staunton St & it shouldn’t take you more than 15 minutes.

Had a good look around Soho but to be honest there are too many western places for my liking as I prefer authentic HK. Kowloon is much more to my liking. Restaurants and bars are extremely expensive as they cater for the ex pat and often wealthy clientele. If you like Western restaurants and bars you will be in your element here. There are many "antique" shops but pointless really other than for looking, unless your airline will let you take a sideboard back with you.

Soho is a lot like the equivalent of chinatown in a North American city. Its a small district that's almost entirely western-style restaurants, pubs and bars. From what we saw, its frequented almost exclusively by Australians, Europeans and Americans.
Like LKF, its probably a great place if you're a homesick westerner, stationed abroad. If you've flown halfway across the world and want to experience something different, this is not a place you want to go.

By chance we landed at Soho district. The landscape is pretty steeped with slopes. Thank goodness some areas have escalators to get to the top. Quite a few food markets in the alley and also antiques shops lining one of the few side streets. Too many bars and cafes frequented by westerners though. I supposed this is where the young and trendy hang out. Rather nice area but not sure about the fuss. I don't think SOHO will become the main tourist attraction.

SoHo is not only a place to visit in the night. The hole in a wall specialty shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants were one of a kind. Unique, chic and cool factor is there.
For some reason, most reviewers just mentioned about night life and restaurants but it kind of misleading. There is a street along Hollywood road that has a couple of vintage and antique shops. There are a couple more here and there found in Aberdeen st, bridges st, gough st, but some have moved out.
After a stroll, you can take a break and visit the Agnes b cafe there for coffee, pastry and people watching.
Tai cheong egg tart is also tucked in one of those slopes. There was a home decor and furniture shop next to.Tai Cheong is also worth the visit.
I bought a home diffuser with a unique fragrance ~ cucumber and basil. It wasrefreshing and most of all it is not a common scent and. Immediately fell in love with it.
Take the escalator up to mid level and then explore the alleys and byways, if you take your time, you will find some treasures.

Hi,
I'm heading over to HK in couple of weeks time after many many years; 12 yrs. A lot has changed, where should i go in 'Soho', what streets, restaurants?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks lots in advance.

Honestly not been to Soho in a few years myself. I do recall a bar/resteraunt which served free monkey nuts and the food was great. I am sure if you ask around or do research someone will know.
Causeway Bay , Lan Kwai Gong and Wan Chai are other good districts.
Sorry can't help anymore.
Enjoy the trip.
