Old style Hong Kong, full of character. Take a trip along the ding ding line towards Western and see all the old streets and stores still in the last century and smelling like it too. Take a deep breath of the fragrant seafood smells covering the whole street.

It is the boutiques, the small art and historical art stores that are making you stroll around for hours and returning on your next trip, as there is always more to discover. The artefacts on display are mostly genuine, and bargaining even in the shops is a must.

Thoroughly enjoyed spending a half of day exploring Hong Kong Island. I would recommend using a tour guide because there is so much to see and the history here is fascinating. Be sure to visit the financial district, the oldest Catholic Church with the stained glass windows of the fishing man and woman - we had never seen this before,... More

I have been staying in the western area of the island for the past few years, and I seem to enjoy it more each time. The Sheung Wan area in particular, convenient to the MTR subway, double decker trams and busses, with its narrow side streets, alleyways, and local stores. From this area, you can get around to a large... More

Streets similar to Sheung Wan, it is a splendid place to stay! Away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong life and Mainland Chinese, walking along this area is pretty relaxing. Food is good and the dried seafood sold here is cheaper comparatively. About 10 mins walk from the Sheung Wan Station, I recommend a visit to this more... More

The Western District includes the communities Sai Ying Pun, Kennedy Town and Shek Tong Tsui on HK island, representing the area immediately east of Sheung Wan and Central district. The area adjacent to and alongside Sheung Wan is rich in local culture and heritage and is the scene of traditional street markets along Des Voeux Road West, including the impressive... More

Western District is full of small streets with a lot of character. The steps going up or down one street can have a totally different vibe. From antique row and some great small restaurants on Hollywood, to the markets where you can find fresh flowers, food, etc are great. It definitely has less of a commercialized feeling. In is also... So I went on Monday. Apparently this is the worst time to go because its so dead. Again, apparently young local and westerners alike hang out in this area on Saturday and Sunday and then Monday is a day of rest. It is not as busy and therefore it is more difficult to get a real sense of the area.

Staying in Sheung Wan

Neighbourhood Profile
Sheung Wan
Unlike most of Hong Kong’s other popular districts, Sheung Wan welcomes wanderers with an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Art galleries are plentiful and boutique cafés are tucked away in every side street in the sub district known as “PoHo.” Browse through the vintage clothing and handmade leather goods stores – it’s no surprise fashionistas flock to this area. History enthusiasts will be rewarded with sites of beautiful architecture, reflecting Sheung Wan’s past as one of the earliest settlements by British forces. As night falls, the entertainment scene reveals itself to be just as laid back with its private kitchens, speakeasies and underground bars dotted throughout the area. When in Sheung Wan, everyday feels like the weekend.
