The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

Lots of fun stuff for the kids. Nice green area to sit and relax.
We were staying close by in McDonald Road so walked through the park a few times on our way out and returning home in the evening. They are open late so you can walk through in the dark . There are monkeys here which I am not a fan of as I don’t like animals kept in cages. Great mountain and lots of fun stuff for the kids. Worth a walk up from the central area.

The place I want to return to
I was in Hong Kong in 2014 and we lived not far from this park. This is one of the most memorable places, very beautiful, incredible number of birds, monkeys, frogs. Beautiful flowers. It's like a Chinese Oasis among city skyscrapers. If you are in Hong Kong, be sure to visit it.

    Great zoo and free
Great zoo with wonderful animals and FREE. I was staying at the hotel across the road and came across the zoo. Like most zoo's I was expecting to pay a hefty entrance free, but I was surprised this one was free, regardless, this zoo was amazing. The birds and mammals were in abundance and so cute and active. A lovely place to wander round.

We took the 12 bus from the bus exchange at the back of Hong Kong MTR station, beside IFC. (There is also minibus 8 from there). It will take you up the steep hill if you dont wish to work up a sweat - we had a toddler in a buggy and it was 32 degrees outside. We got off at the Caritas House stop, walked back down the hill 30 metres to the corner and then turned right and up for 50 metres to a small side entrance to the gardens. After that, its up to where the monkeys and other primates can be seen. There are some benches up there which are shaded. Another writer here objected to the size of the cages. But for me this is a well maintained, albeit small, facility with enough room for the primates. There is also a small educational centre which is useful for some Aircon, with a room that has crayons, tables and paper to amuse the small ones while you cool down. Beside the centre, there is an underpass to the Aviaries on the other side of the gardens. That side is even hillier that the primate side. Quite a few varieties of bird there and a nice fountain area albeit not much shade to be had. Overall it is a nice, relaxing place to visit.

I’m lucky to live 2 mins from this beautiful botanical park. Although the monkey and meerkat enclosures are currently out of bounds. The sounds of the garden are still beautiful every time I walk through. Head for the fountain and sit in a peaceful vibe for a a few minutes to reclaim your thoughts and your day.

There is free entry to Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens which was really fun to visit. They had many cute and interesting animals and the enclosure sizes were large. There was a kiosk there and a massive waterfall which are good for photos.

You should take time to visit the Hong Kong Zoo and. Botanical Gardens. It is close to downtown and near the Peak Tram Terminus. Entrance is free. Terrain is very hilly. Most interesting display is the puff cheek gibbon cages. They are seen swinging around with their little ones teaching them how to maneuver from one tree to another. Restrooms are located behind the gibbon cage after a short but extreme uphill ascent. A good place for a picnic is here. The pandas are not located here. They are at Ocean Park. Recently that attraction has had financial difficulties and if it is forced to close it is unknown where the pandas will end up.

Clean and well maintained place with free admission. Unfortunately the animal enclosures are way too small. I felt especially bad for the apes, that were vegetating in their dull cages and the one single meerkat in basically a terrarium.

Came here with our 4 year old and really happy. Not too big to walk around but plenty to see. Lovely knowing seeing the range of animals was a free activity and a lovely greenhouse of plants. Beautiful area to walk around and enjoyed a couple of hours here. We then walked to the peak tram from here.

I came across this garden during my trek back to Central after coming down from Victoria’s Peak. It was not on my sightseeing list but sometimes my taking the road less traveled results in a nice visit to someplace new and different.

This was surprisingly a large park that was spread out over a large (and assumed to be valuable) plot of land.

Since I entered through the rear entrance I first came across a large playground for kids. As it was turning into a warm afternoon, there were only a handful of kids about and who were mostly in the shade. The aviary was the next site with quite a number of large enclosures filled with various types of wild birds. Off the main path was a small bamboo forest and a fabulous hot house full of amazing orchids in bloom. In both areas I was the only person around.

Open lawn areas were sprinkled around the park and a huge central fountain was a popular gathering spot for couples and families. The slight mist was refreshing.

The mammal section was accessed through a small tunnel (where I found the photo history of the park fascinating) and contained mostly primates who were quite active that afternoon.
