One of the most easily recognisable skyscrapers amongst the Hong Kong Skyline is the Bank of China (BOC) tower. Designed by Chinese-American architect L.M. Pei, the building was opened in 1990 and at 72 floors, was the tallest building in Hong Kong until passing that torch to Central Plaza three years later. The BOC Tower is located between Cotton Tree Drive and Garden Road, just off Queensway in the Central District.

The BOC Tower exterior is elegant and sleek and is based on important feng shui principles. The framework is that of a stack of triangles reaching upward to the sky. It is particularly attractive to view at night, when the triangular outlines are lit up brightly while the rest of the building remains dark, blending into the night sky.

In addition to viewing the BOC Tower from up close and locations such as Hong Kong Park and Victoria Peak on the Hong Kong side, it is also easily recognisable during harbour ferry rides as well as prime locations on the TST side including the Avenue of Stars promenade, upper floor sky bars, restaurants and viewing platforms near the harbour.

The Bank of China Building is said to be the tallest building in Hong Kong. It was built to be taller than the Hong Kong headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, which is a multinational bank that is technically British. The Bank of China had to be taller; it's a matter of face for China. The Bank of China is an impressive building, but it is fairly utilitarian. It does have an excellent location near Victoria Harbour; it's a spectacular sight at night.

This viewing platform is for free, but you must take some form of indentification to get in. The tower is easy to find, just go up to the information desk, then security and you will get some passes. YOu will travel up to the 43rd floor and view the harbour directly in front of tower. It was fantastic, and spooky to look down.

This site is very close by to the Hong Kong Park and the Zoological Park. Its worth a look for the price alone.

If riding the tram or taking the island line subway, the Bank of China Tower is only steps away. It is not a major tourist attraction, but it is free and very few people take advantage of it, so when you get off at the 43rd floor, you may be the only one there. You can stop in on your way back from the peak tram. Just go into the ground floor reception desk. Show passport or drivers license and they will give you a personalized pass to wear around your neck. Pass it over the security bar and enter the elevator to the 43rd floor. The observation deck faces the harbor, with good view of the surrounding buildings. A description is available to identify the buildings. Lots of security both downstairs and at the observation deck level. Observation deck is open only Monday to Friday only.

We called in here after visiting Hong Kong Zoo (which isn't as grand as it sounds, but still worth while). The Bank is an impressive looking, modern building.

You can travel up to the 43rd floor to get a limited view of Hong Kong - mainly the high rise buildings on the island side & the harbour side of Kowloon.

You have to take your passport with you to get a visitor pass and then you travel up in a special elevator which only has buttons for two floors - the ground floor & the 43rd floor!!

If you're in the area its worth going up (just make sure its a clear day).

The actual building is quite spectacular from the exterior. It is meant to look like a number of cubes placed on top of each other. Cubes are meant to bring negative energy but the water features counteract this. The 43rd floor viewing deck is CLOSED and has been for about 2 years, according to the girl at the reception desk. The public can not access the viewing deck at all.

You can only enter the building from Monday to Friday, from 9am til 5pm.
Quite a shame that you cannot find that information beforehead.

Note that the observation deck is closed permanently. However, the building is still good to photograph from the outside as you walk by it towards other attractions.

The view from the observation deck is very very nice, I would argue as good if not better than the view from the summit of the Peak.

Best of all it is free. Just make sure you have photo ID for building security to give you a pass to get up to the observation level.

There are no facilities on the deck, which is really a lobby for the mid way elevators in the building but you should not need more than 15 or 20 minutes to be able to get the photos that you want.

When we went there were only two or three other people which was a surprise given the great view.

If you have the time it is something not to miss on a visit to Hong Kong.

This is one of the two towers with a free viewing platform in Central (the other being IFC2). You just need to register to get you visitor pass to go up to the 43 floor. The view is interesting and I prefer it to The Peak as you are actually in the city.
