Top ways to experience Wan Chai
The area
Neighbourhood: Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centres of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.

There are not many seats. The decoration is new, clean and bright, and the management is good. ✨ Even the nostalgic kettle is cute. 😆 The Sichuan cuisine is authentic, high quality, and the price is reasonable. The lunch set is very cost-effective. 😍 ✨Sauerkraut fish in golden soup $228 The pickled fish is the restaurant’s signature dish. A large plate of hot and spicy food🍲The golden yellow soup base is very attractive. The spicy and sour soup is rich. The fish meat is thick and delicious. The side dishes include lettuce🥬Bean sprouts with smooth and elastic crystal powder skin🍜 ✨Collagen Crispy Pork Knuckle $128 The skin of the pork knuckle is deep-fried to a crispy texture🐷The meat is very chewy and full of collagen, fat but not greasy. It is paired with a large amount of fried garlic🧄chili🌶️chives and is very flavorful and not too spicy👍🏻 ✨Handmade brown sugar glutinous rice cake $46 The glutinous rice cake is fried and then topped with brown sugar sauce and sprinkled with peanut powder😍The outside is crispy and the inside is soft and glutinous without being greasy. It tastes sweet and the rice is rich in aroma. It’s delicious🤤 ✨Panda Ice Powder $32 A large cup of ice powder noodles with cute panda marshmallows🐼The ice powder is crystal clear, so cold and smooth. Adding brown syrup makes it refreshing and sweet, which can relieve the spiciness😋The ingredients include raisins and crushed peanuts to make the taste richer. 📍Chuan Huo Tang (Causeway Bay) Shop B, G/F, Wing Wah Commercial Building, 401-403 Lockhart Road, Causeway BayVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 April 2024

This vibrant neighbourhood is very convenient for all modes of public transport, filled with eateries from the local street hawker, and cha cha tang, to upmarket fine dining. There is also cuisine from all parts of the world. Everything to suit your pocket. The nightlife can be seedy with bars and people of questionable repute but it is safe, and also wonderful live music especially at the Wanch. If you are a morning person and need your caffeine, there are shops and outlets like M&S, Pacific Coffee, Starbucks and Bakehouse.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 August 2024

Friendly but please don’t forget! However don’t let that be something that either puts you off or is the only thing you go to bars like ‘Dusk Till Dawn’. The band there are absolutely fantastic, great mix of modern classics, 80’s rock and sing a long! Could have stayed until 6am but was a little bit wobbly with my wife. Walk along Lee Tung Avenue which is one of the few tree-lined, stone-paved pedestrian walkways in Hong Kong and then you have the Blue House and Wan Chai Pak Tai Temple. So different to 1982 and yet many areas still similar with the multitude of shops, restaurants, offices, market stalls and landmarks from prior eras. Not sure if there is still a vibrant 'red light' area, it was interesting in 1982 when we were on a guided night walking tour.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 December 2024

There is a Korean takeaway shop near Gooseneck Bridge in Wan Chai. It offers traditional Korean cuisine and a variety of marinated Korean food. It also provides seafood frozen meat and Korean beef and pork imported from Korea. The price is very reasonable. I specially came here for takeout this time. Take your time to taste the traditional Korean cuisine at home. The Korean ingredients are specially introduced. The taste is very authentic and the quality is good. You can come back next time to buy meat and grill it at home♨️💕
✨Package A for 2-3 persons $198
There are four foods and two drinks in the set meal that you can choose from, with a high degree of freedom in matching. The portions are large and the CP value is high👍🏻👍🏻
🔸Roast beef and seaweed rice rolls
The rice rolls are freshly made every day and have been pre-cut into a large box. The ingredients of the rice rolls are very rich. The ratio of rice is relatively small😍👍🏻There is a lot of beef and it is fried very fragrant. It tastes thick and rich in texture with the white rice with the aroma of sesame oil.
🔹Ginseng chicken soup
The skin and flesh of the chicken that has been simmered for a long time can easily separate. The soup stewed with ginseng, red dates, chestnuts and glutinous rice is very nutritious but not greasy. It is also served with a big bowl of rice🍚
🔸Original boneless fried chicken
A big box of fried chicken is enough for three people🐔The fried chicken is delicious and the meat is tender and smooth. The skin without sauce is extra crispy and the batter is thin.
🔹Fresh spicy kimchi
The kimchi is freshly made every day🥬The pickling time is relatively short, the taste is sweet and not too spicy, and the texture is crispy😬Good for appetizing meals
🔸Drinks
You can choose two of the four drinks🧃I ordered the relatively rare green grape juice and pear juice
✨Korean fried vermicelli $48
The ingredients are so rich, including mushrooms, carrots, onions, fungus, and spinach🥕🥬It won’t be too greasy when fried. Adding white sesame seeds makes it more fragrant😋Korean vermicelli has a smoky texture.

Dinner at Iron Rice Bowl tonight, located on the LG2 floor of Wan Chai Royal Hotel, 33 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai. The store environment is noble and elegant, with a nostalgic Southeast Asian style. The restaurant specializes in high-end Malaysian and Chinese dishes. Soon after we sat down, the waiter brought us shrimp crackers and chrysanthemum tea ($32 per person). In addition, we ordered snail head fish maw stewed chicken soup $168, lemongrass smoked crispy pigeon $88, charcoal Grilled Iberico Pork Ribs $164, Abalone and Chicken Risotto $168, Shrimp, Ginger and Scallion Noodles $188, Malay Crispy Pancake Cake $68.
📌Shrimp crackers ~ Eat the shrimp crackers with spicy sauce, especially crispy and delicious.
📌Snail head fish maw stewed chicken soup ~ The taste is sweet, the stew soup is full of ingredients, nourishing and nourishing.
📌Lemongrass smoked crispy pigeon ~ There is a nice smoky flavor in the mouth, the crispy pigeon has a shiny outer skin, a crispy and fragrant texture, and tender and delicious meat.
📌Charcoal Grilled Iberico Pork Ribs ~ The meat is rich in aroma, rich and juicy, and you can taste the unique taste of charcoal grilling. Paired with the spicy yellow pepper sauce, the taste is even more enhanced. There are six glasses of lemon special drink, which is very sour and relieves greasiness.
📌Abalone and chicken risotto ~ A delicious and multi-ingredient risotto. The gravy penetrates into the rice, making it delicious.
📌Big head shrimp, ginger and scallion noodles ~ The shrimp meat is fresh and large, the ginger and scallion noodles are fragrant and the noodles are refreshing.
📌Malay crispy pancake ~ crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, filled with corn and peanuts, fragrant and delicious.
Overall, the restaurant has reasonable prices, high-quality dishes, and attentive service.

There are many tenement buildings in Hong Kong, but not many of them can be preserved, especially on Hong Kong Island. After joining the guided tour this time, I learned more about the lives of the poor and subdivided houses in Hong Kong in the early days: why were they painted blue? The exterior wall? What was the previous love letter like? Why can it be preserved? Can I apply to live in the Blue House now?
Sometimes, in addition to going abroad during vacation, sometimes it is also interesting to learn about local history.

Wan Chai is another shopping area like Causeway Bay but more low key. Many small side streets with small shops and kiosks. It is accessible by MTR with aptly named station. Surprisingly, I was able to find a cable for a charger that I could not find anywhere including Bangkok, where we live. So it may surprise you also. Walk thru Lee Tung Avenue, a pedestrian mall with cute shops, a Pizza Express and Dan Ryan's Chicago Grill. Most of this area is wheelchair accessible.

I love Wan Chai. Although I live Mid-Levels I’d love to move to Wan Chai as I think it has it all, the markets, great people and a vibrant new atmosphere coupled with the old Style of Hong Kong. New and old buildings alike. The Blue House, wan chai market, Triangle Street for great fruit and vegetables. Cheap electrical shops. Head to Wan Chai pier to hop over to Tsim Sha Tsui for a couple of dollars (HKD). The Central Plaza Building is great for a fantastic view of HK. Get the lift to the 46th Floor for a stunning 360 view.

Wan Chai is a metropolitan area situated at the western part of the Wan Chai District on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong. Its other boundaries are Canal Road to the east, Arsenal Street to the west and Bowen Road to the south. The area north of Gloucester Road is often referred to as Wan Chai North.

I will admit I was mainly in one area of Wan Chai, but all the bars and brothels, or the suggestion of being brothels, made me want to be anywhere but wan Chair. Fortunately the MTR is nearby to do so.

Wan Chai is all things to all people... depending on the time of day. Sure, it is Hong Kong's red light district, but that light does not turn on before dark. During the day, you will encounter nothing offensive there (the focal point of Wan Chai being Lockhart Road). To the contrary you will find good English pubs, wide array of reasonable restaurants and, to my amazement, legitimate (inexpensive) massage therapy places.
Sure there are girlie bars, but they do not wake until dark and even then they are harmless places. (Nearly all are staffed by simple, small-town girls from the Philippines who arrive in HK, work every day six months and fly home. Very sad). Sure, you will be pressured to buy drinks, but you will not be mugged or drugged. That is folklore.
There are also several good live music venues (bands start at 10 pm) and good street food.
There are, however, no street walkers or other uninvited attractions. Walk anywhere in Wan Chai, holding tight your wife's hand, and you will be respected. No one will bother you.
ps: If the US Navy is in town, avoid Wan Chai at all costs.
