This has to be the saddest place i have ever been too. Looking at those beautiful birds locked in cages had me in tears. I looked straight into the eyes of the most beautiful Toucan who was locked in a cage of less than a meter sq. The Hong Kong authorities need to close this place down and let all the birds free. Sad Sad Sad please avoid.

Just recently saw this and was thinking ' Oh i can hear birds singing in a garden'...Oh no..not in HK.. the poor birds are stuffed into tiny cages..and i mean really tiny...i took pictures of lots of birds stuffed into one cage hidden under other birds...this is just exploitation of beautiful creatures by uninformed/uneducated people who think it's fine to keep birds like this..It's horrific ..but what's more horrific are the pets shops nearby on Peace Avenue and nearby streets where i saw the most beautiful dogs and cats kept in tiny cages crying pitifully...What is wrong with these people!
The SPCA has a campaign to try to end this but where there's demand!..HK needs to know that tourists wont tolerant this. Also the AFCD close the Bird garden regularly due to Bird Flu...Poor Birds i'm not surprised they get ill.

As in many other areas in China - this is a horrible animal abuse. Birds in tiny cages, tens of other birds crowded in not-much-bigger cages....everything there is about animal suffering.
There is such a dissonance between the bird sound the conditions they live in. Please don't buy anything there...

The Bird Street Market at Yuen Po Street is one of several peculiar markets in the Mongkok District located just past the Flower Market and Mongkok Stadium. This outdoor market was opened in the 1990s after the original bird market area around Shanghai and Argyle Street was redevelopment into what is now Langham Place.
Today, you can visit the bird garden and outdoor Bird Street Market and find quite a few exotic bird species being sold and displayed. There are stalls also selling live bird feed which is interesting if you've never seen large grasshoppers, crickets and other bird feed. You'll also see cages, accessories and products for bird owners.
The birds can be quite loud and active during the day. I enjoy it when those parrot owners have their birds out. There are a several scarlet and blue and yellow macaws usually around. They are quite tame and enjoyable to watch. One owner enjoys allowing visitors to hold his blue and yellow macaw so they can take photos. This is always neat to see.
On good weather weekends it is not uncommon to find parrot owners stopping by to chat with each other at the Bird Street Garden. They carry their lovely birds around and are always happy to show off their birds and let you take pictures if you ask politely.
Overall, the bird market can be an interesting place to spend 20-30 minutes if you are planning to spend time in Mongkok and want to see the various markets in this district of the city.
Note: The Bird Market is basically an extension of the Flower Market. It is convenient to visit from Prince Edwards or Mongkok East MTR stations.

The bird market in Mongkok is interesting! However, on its own, its not a great sight in Hong Kong. You need combine this with the flower market (100 meters away), the nearby goldfish market (just read the signs to get there, 3-5 walk) and the Fa Yuen Street market - street stalls. Combined this makes a very nice half day visit in Mong Kok.
You can eat at any number of good local restaurants in the Mongkok area while out, its where you can get some of the best (and cheapest) food in Hong Kong. Most places have English menus and you can just point to the pictures and words, they'll understand and bring you some yummy food (we like the noodle shops)!!!
Best done in the afternoon when the goldfish venders are all open, can see more and better animal life for photography. At night time come back to Mongkok for the Ladies Market off Argyle street.

The Bird Garden is a fascinating place where people can buy birds or bring their own birds for an outing. I know it sounds strange but people take thier birds in little bird cages and let them talk to other birds while their owners talk to each other. The birds there range from little finches to parrots and exotic birds obviously imported. There are a lot of birds for sale but the exotic ones generally aren't. It can be a bit disturbing to see these majestic birds in small cages as they don't have room to move around but the place is worth a visit.

The Yuenpu Bird Garden is fascinating (you can read about it on this page), I walked there, but the nearest MTR station is Prince Edward. Then walk the Kowloon market trail. There are various guided tours of these markets, but I preferred to explore them on my own. Start at Mong Kok near the Bird Garden and follow the market trail to the Flower, then Goldfish, Meat, then Ladies’ Markets and lastly the Temple St Night Market. Along the way you will also pass many kitchen utensil shops. You can end the walk at the Tin Hau Temple. This will bring you close to the Jordan MTR station. I can’t tell you how far I walked, but get a map and follow it and you can look up these markets on the internet before you set out. There are many places where you can stop and sit along the way and watch the passing parade.

The Bird Garden is a horrible place. Many shops and stalls selling beautiful birds, but virtually all of them are kept in the most appalling conditions - 20 budgerigars in a cage suitable for one, cockatoos and small parrots so squashed in that they can't move.
A seriously sad place that would be instantly shut down in the UK.

Seeing so many birds in such tiny spaces is appalling. Each one had at most a small decorative cage as its home while many shared only slightly bigger cages with up to dozens of other birds. Some were in narrow boxes barely taller than themselves. Very few were able to shelter themselves from sunlight. I saw many birds with overgrown beaks, deformed feet and plucked (absent) feathers. Virtually all of them expressed stereotypical behavior such as flitting back and forth, self-harm (plucking their own feathers off, rubbing their heads on bars etc.) or simply screaming nonstop, or else sitting still. Their food bowls appeared to also contain very simple diets, often consisting of only one ingredient such as sunflower seeds which are high in fat, or some sort of grain.
Remember birds are not at all accustomed to confined spaces, much less ones where they can barely spread their wings, let alone fly where they want. They had no enrichment and were constantly surrounded by the deafening screaming of other birds. Tradition as songbird keeping may be, in these conditions it is inhumane and extremely objectifying towards the birds.
For those wishing to see beautiful birds I would infinitely more recommend the Edward Youde Aviary instead, where one can watch birds in a quite natural environment and observe their behavior.

We visited the Bird Garden on a saturday morning at 10 am . Took the MTR to Prince Edward station , used exit B2, the Flower Market is close by and leads into to Bird garden. Both are amazing and worth a visit. And if you're into photography , you'll be in your element !
When you return to the MTR station , head south towards the Ladies market and you'll pass the Gold Fish Market ( at the top of Tung Choi Street), very interesting too !
