At North Point, you can find an open wet market sprawling on and around Chun Yeung Street. This historic street market has been bustling for over a hundred years, providing a glimpse in to the old-school way of buying your daily veggies, fruits, meat and seafood, the way things were done prior to modern supermarkets.

This is a neat place to explore if you have not seen many open wet markets. Don't mind the smells and occasional mess you encounter, just make your way through the market and take whatever pictures you like. Places like the Chun Yeung Street market can be a real eye-opening experience.

Unfortunately, North Point isn't the most convenient location and there are similar wet market scenes if you prefer something more centrally located. Try the street market scene in Wan Chai and Graham Street in Central. In Kowloon, similar scenes are not difficult to find in Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei. Our favourite is the large scale open markets found up in Tai Po in the New Territories.

Note: If you want to visit the Chun Yeung street market is just west of the North Point MTR station and head west. Alternatively, you can take the tram there as well.

...as it’s friendly and relatively clean plus it had the obvious bonus of being eminently photographable from and because of the tram, which splits the crowds every few minutes. Getting the tram from Central to the North Point Terminus is a pretty great activity in and of itself, and this makes a good end point.

It was jumping, there were stalls with fresh vegetables and fruit but mainly stalls selling meat (pork in the main) but every part you can imagine or would rather not. The street is quite narrow and to add to the mayhem the tram runs right down the middle of the street. The majority of stalls were selling fresh fish so fresh it was still swimming or crawling. The fish is just hacked up alive and is still quivering and you could see the heart still beating in some. It was much the same for the chickens, you pick the one you want, the lady tags it and then cuts its throat there and then right in front of you.
Quite a spectacle well worth seeing but bear in mind this is for locals and not those of a nervous disposition

Every time I watch travel documentry telling how amazing Maeklong Railway Market, I thought, there is one in Hong kong but no body notice! It is an average wet market that sell day-to-day product to the local people, but has a trams that cuts throught the narrow street in the middle regulaly. It is equally thrilling went the tram passing by. The area was once know as "Little Shanghai" and Little Chiu Chau". Back in the hay days it have plenty of Hi Class Night Clubs and Casinos that put Las Vegas to shame. Its was once a Communist Strong Hold during the turbulance years during the "Cultural Reveloution" and the "Cold War" eras. Also, it house a famous Cinema that frequently show Communist Propaganda Movies. In gemeral, the area may be non-glamourous, dirty, not pretty, very blue collar. But it has lots of charaters. A place worth visit if you are sick of Glossy tourist trap!!

In this street you can experience both modern and ancient side of Hong Kong. Chun Yeung Street saves as a wet market, tram terminus, tourist attraction and semi-residential area. It is centrally located in the heart of North Point and close to Hong Kong's Cantonese opera house, Beam Theatre as well as the historic State Theatre. There is a ferry pier to travel to the other side of Hong Kong and several bus stations for travellers to and from mainland China. The street has two prominent hotels, Newton Inn and M1 Hotel. It is worth visiting and experience the wet and fresh side of Hong Kong flooding. The only down side is that it is not easy to walk around due to the high human traffic and constant tram movement. Random and illegal sex workers also frequently patronise the street for single or "cheating men" wanting to play naughty with local. Good for day and evening walk.

We were staying at North Point so this was a great market that we could walk to. Got all the sights and smells of a genuine 'wet' market so called because of all the fresh food, some of it so fresh that it is still flapping about! Certainly worth a walk through if you are anywhere near Kings Road.

This area reflects on what Hong Kong would've been like maybe 50 yrs ago with meat, fish & vegetable markets on one side of the road and clothing etc markets & restaurants on the other.

The tram runs right along the left side of the road leaving a narrow path between market and tracks to walk along.

We stayed in North Point for a week and frequented this area when we got off the tram.

Heard so much about the wet market so decided to venture to North Point. Decided to take the tram as it was highly recommended. The tram basically goes through the market so you don’t even have to alight if you don’t want to. The scene is typically of HK wet markets, fruits and vegetables look so fresh and the seafood I was told is very good and fresh. I found a great little spice shop that has all the Asian and Middle Eastern spices. There is so much to explore and it’s great to wander around once the tram stop at the station.

This traditional Hong Kong market street is where locals do their shopping -- and make those of us who shop in sterile, traditional supermarkets envious of the variety of fruits, vegetables and fresh, flopping fish envious. It is just a block from the North Point subway station on the Island Line, or make a more dramatic entrance by taking an eastbound tram which, literally, splits the street which is often impeded by shoppers.
