A visit to Aberdeen, Hong Kong Island

Visited to see Jumbo restaurant..took their free shuttle..had a look around the glittering restaurant then took the free shuttle back to Aberdeen promenade...overall very shabby waters...but in the dark the glittering restaurant and skyscrapers hid all the shabbiness ..

Aberdeen is the largest town on Hong Kong Island outside the main urban area, and it was famous for being the place where Hong Kong boat people lived in the 1960s and 1970s. Popular activities are to take a sampan ride, enjoy seafood at Jumbo Floating Restaurant. Aberdeen Harbor is in the bay between the south coast of Hong Kong... More

Here's where it all started. Aberdeen is one of the nine Harbours in Hong Kong, and it was used for early trade by the British. Now it's famous as a tourist attraction for its floating village and floating seafood restaurants which are located in the Aberdeen Harbour. Many of the Tanka people, traditional fishermen, still live on boats in the Aberdeen... More

Really ; we didn't expect much but had a blast with the 30 minute boat ride u can buy either at "sticker price" or for half of it after negotiations. It is the weird little things you see, and probably make pictures of that are worth the time spent. Fishermen working and how they cope with a) lack of cash... More

Pretty looking area but don't make a dedicated visit there as there's not a whole lot to do. If you're going to Ocean Park, you'll see over the whole area from the cable cars and the upper part of the park. Bus 70 goes there from the Exchange Square bus terminus if you still wish to visit.

Aberdeen is still like old Hong Kong even though there are now plenty of modern high rise apartment blocks having been recently built, not leas due to the MTR being extended to reach Aberdeen. The harbour area is interesting and a Sampan ride around worthwhile to do but make sure you bargain for a reasonable price. I managed to get... More

We stopped to do a sampan ride as it was included in our Big Bus tour. I don't know if there are more attractive areas to do the rides, we were near the Jumbo restaurant. It was not the nicest of areas and there was no evidence of the old fishing area remaining. The water looked horrible so you wouldn't... More

We were here on a Gate1 tour and made a stop by Jumbo Kingdom, where some of us went on a sampan ride out to the Aberdeen fishing village. We were here in 1986 as well as 1992 and it has changed considerably - and not as interesting as it was before. Our local tour guide recommended that we do... More

Aberdeen is a small district where is located between a country park and traditional fishing village. Admittedly, it will be quite boring to visitors as tourist information and facilities are not well-managed like in Central or Tsim Sha Tsui. But as a resident in Aberdeen, I still recommend you spending some time here. Most visitors take the most typical itin... More

The Jumbo Restaurant in Aberdeen is a famous tourist mecca, but the rear end looks tad greasy -- just as long s he food tastes, okay, people will go there. The fishing boats are being edge out by luxury cruisers. Moorings, I suppose, go to the highest bidder but it's a bit sad seeing fishing boats replaced by luxury yachts.... More
