The area around the Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau promenades including the harbour in between has a long and rich history as a fishing village. The best way to experience the area is by taking a stroll along the Aberdeen Waterfront as well as a sampan boat ride across the harbour. There are signage posts along the waterfront telling local fishing village history. A quick You will also see houseboats, small fish market and seafood venders lining the Aberdeen waterfront. The park next to the waterfront has fishing and sea themed sculptures and park facilities. Regular cheap sampan (junk boat) rides across he harbour are used by many locals and tourists. The ride is around 5 minutes, passing by rows of junks as well as commercial fishing vessels, yachts and other seacrafts. The Ap Lei Chau promenade and park is also nicely landscaped. There is a historic Hung Shing Temple and great views back across the harbour of Aberdeen and HK island. A return sampan boat ride back across and you are back in Aberdeen.

Certainly Aberdeen no longer has the charm of many years ago, when it was a large port of fishermen who lived and traded on junks, but it has nevertheless preserved some interesting points and it is certainly worth dedicating half a day of visit to it. It can be easily reached from Hong Kong with various buses and a very low cost.
