- BradHong Kong, China174,457 contributionsInteresting way to spend a couple of hours in the Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau areaThe area around the Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau promenades including the harbour in between has a long and rich history as a fishing village. The best way to experience the area is by taking a stroll along the Aberdeen Waterfront as well as a sampan boat ride across the harbour. There are signage posts along the waterfront telling local fishing village history. A quick You will also see houseboats, small fish market and seafood venders lining the Aberdeen waterfront. The park next to the waterfront has fishing and sea themed sculptures and park facilities. Regular cheap sampan (junk boat) rides across he harbour are used by many locals and tourists. The ride is around 5 minutes, passing by rows of junks as well as commercial fishing vessels, yachts and other seacrafts. The Ap Lei Chau promenade and park is also nicely landscaped. There is a historic Hung Shing Temple and great views back across the harbour of Aberdeen and HK island. A return sampan boat ride back across and you are back in Aberdeen.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 February 2024
- GrazianoSwitzerland15,920 contributionsAberdeen - Hong KongCertainly Aberdeen no longer has the charm of many years ago, when it was a large port of fishermen who lived and traded on junks, but it has nevertheless preserved some interesting points and it is certainly worth dedicating half a day of visit to it. It can be easily reached from Hong Kong with various buses and a very low cost. Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 March 2024

The waterfront was very clean. We boarded the sampan and traveled around the busy harbor for about twenty minutes. We first passed the multi-million dollar yachts and then we traveled past the families living on their sampans. Amazing comparison of the old and the new.

I like the village where u can see the Chinese simple and old way of living. How they survive in everyday life before...How they manage to live with that kind of house and a very interesting work(catching fish and sell it along the road).

It is one of the poorest areas of Hongkong away from the glamorous areas. The sampans or local chinese boat rides thro the Aberdeen village. Jumbo Restaurant - the worlds largest floating resturant is located in these waters. If lucky , Jackie Chan luxury boat can be seen.

Took the bus from Stanley to Aberdeen to find that there really was not too much of interest. There is the floating restaurant but with so many bad reviews on that, I wondered why we had bothered to visit. Bus ride was scenic and was the best part of the trip haha.

My wife and I undertook an afternoon and evening Grayline HK tour of Hong Kong Island on 29 December 2019 which culminated in a Bauhinia Harbour Dinner Cruise incorporating the nightly Symphony of Lights experience.
The tour covered a number of key attractions of Hong Kong Island including an enjoyable thirty minute sampan boat ride on the famed Aberdeen Fishing Village Harbour.
The village of Aberdeen is located in the south-west of Hong Kong Island. It is a quaint and charming fishing village creating a picturesque scene, with traditional fishing boats moored side by side modern yachts with the Hong Kong high rise buildings framing the harbour offering a world of interesting contrasts.
On the day of our Grayline tour it was raining on and off. However, the rain stopped for our sampan ride on the Aberdeen Harbour which was rather fortunate. We set off for our sampan boat ride from a very ornately decorated jetty. The sampan was equipped with surprisingly comfortable polished wooden seating.
It was an enjoyable experience with lots of interesting boating activity on the water. We saw row upon row of the old-fashioned junks and sampans and some house boats where some fishermen and their families still live. The village has been an important fishing port since the 19th century. Originally it has been estimated that there were 600 fishing junks at the harbour where approximately 6,000 people resided. However, over the past 20 years the number of fishing villagers has declined and many of the residents have moved onshore.
The outstanding sight on the sampan tour is of course the Jumbo Kingdom Floating Restaurant. It has become one of the important landmarks in Hong Kong, providing high-end catering services for tourists. It was completed and opened in 1976 after four years at a cost of more than 30 million Hong Kong dollars. It has ornately adorned artwork and traditional dragon sculptures. It is such an imposing structure consisting of three floors and an open top deck. Amid the many smaller junks, sampans and yachts it certainly dominates the harbour seascape. The boat ride gave us two contrasting insights into the Jumbo Floating Restaurant – a first impression of a very ornate frontage which they happily want you to see and later in the cruise a view of a most ordinary uninspiring back area which they probably hope many won't see.
I recalled doing a sampan boat ride of this fishing village back in 1974 when I first visited Hong Kong. Back then there were more fishing boats but no modern yachts and there was no completed Jumbo Floating Restaurant. I enjoyed it then as much as I enjoyed it this time around. There is still today a touch of tradition and charm about the old Aberdeen fishing port that appeals. Indeed a sampan boat ride on the Aberdeen Harbour is still an enjoyable, scenic highlight of any Hong Kong Island tour.

Not a lot has changed in Aberdeen over the last fifty years. The floating restaurants and house boats are still in place. Well worth a visit

Took this as part of a tour; you show up, you pay some money, and you're cruised around a bay, sailing between subsistence fisherman who reside on their crafts and jumbo luxury yachts from all over the world. Didn't see any exhibits charting the history of the area and it was like any maritime wharf you'd see around the world.
This might have been the failure of the tour to drop us anywhere meaningful, but I didn't see the need for the stop one way or the other. Again, it's a tour stop, not a sight unto itself.

Anybody able advise how much will be the sampan ride?
Is a loop ride or one way to Jumbo?
Anybody try the floating Jumbo before? Able advise the food and price?
Thank you very much !

I took a free return Sampan ride to the Jumbo restaurant or you could pay public transport fees, which is also a sampan ride, for HK$2+ . Private Sampan ride, for me, it wasn't necessary.

le prix de cette ballade dans la baie et faut il réserver ou prendre sur place au dernier moment ?
Written 17 May 2017
