Have been to Nanshan ski resort the first time on December 27, the second time on December 31st. The first time it was not possible to get to the top of the "mountain" (hill) because the black slope had not been prepared yet, so skiing the whole day on the beginners slope was a little bit boring. Instead, the second time, one of the 2 black slopes starting from the top of the mountain was open and it was a great experience. Just regret not to be there in middle of January when the other black slope "extreme snow channel" is planned to open, as judging from above it should be very steep and challenging. One more reason to go there again in the future. In total the ski resort has 3 chairlifts, all of them are 4 seats fixed-grip type with no cover. The only defect is that the foot stand is made for chinese skiers, which means that if you are taller than 1,8 meter then it's very difficult to put your skis on it, leaving them leaning down all the time. I also enjoyed the moguls areas, they have easy, medium, difficult one (this last one is just the standard black slope starting from the top of the mountain). Rental procedure is OK, you have to pay 400 rmb as a deposit, the once you rent something the related cost will be deduct from this deposit so you don't need to handle cash all the time. Food is OK and organization is OK. Parking fee is 5 rmb but if you are lucky sometimes is free (don't know why). Have a nice day!

Our group of 14 relatives have just returned from a ski trip to this ski resort. Two children, 5 teenagers and 5 adults skied. Only two of us had some previous skiing experience but only at elementary level. Yet all of us enjoyed our 2½ days skiing there. The 2 elderly ladies in our group enjoyed watching their children and grandchildren skied.

This ski resort is ideal for beginners because (a) there are drag-lifts (tow-ropes) besides chairlifts and (b) the slope at the Ski School is gentle, great for learners. Beginners tend to fall when skiing off from chairlifts, thus drag-lfits are a great help to beginners.

Only the 2 (4-year-old) children and 2 older ladies (in the 50’s and 60’s) needed 3x 2hr lessons each. The other 7 adults needed only one 2-hr lesson each. Yet they enjoyed skiing 2 full days thereafter. By the 3rd day, they were skiing confidently, beginners style.

All 14 of us also took chairlifts to the top of the mountain. Below we could see experienced skiers coming down from the mountain top and some skiers leaping over snow ramps. There were also snowboarding. Two from our group tried out the 1,318 meter-long toboggan (luge sledding). There was also snow sledge (looked like inner tubes of tyres) for children. We did not see anyone trying out the cable hang-glider.

We stayed at Shirton Inn which is within the ski village, within walking distance to the ski area. Shirton Inn was clean and pleasant. The rooms were heated by a gas-fired fireplace. On our first night, the room seemed to need a few hours to warm up but by the last day we felt rather warm (as we had acclimatised to the cold by then). The only drawbacks of Shirton Inn were (a) the face towels looked grey and (b) the control for the fireplace was invisible.

Breakfirsts and dinners at Shirton Inn were good. Lunches at the ski area were great.

The only drawback of the skiing arrangement was that my credit card and identity card were kept as deposit for the ski equipment rental. I felt uncomfortable leaving my credit card at the ticket office.

2nd time around to this place but this time a little difference - we went on our own unlike the 1st which was 2 years ago via tour group.

The place is still good. Most importantly, the ski lessons are a lot cheaper as compared to say, Korea - Alpensia. Though most if not all the lessons are conducted in Mandarin, the costs per hour/pax is a lot affordable. Had my 2 kids under a single instructor for 3 hrs including the ski equipment rental - the whole 3 hrs came up to RMB560 which is roughly SGD120 or USD95(approx.). Though each ski resorts will have their own plus & minus points, each will have their own appeal.

Overall, we had a wonderful time here. Though there are many write-ups on getting to this place fm Beijing, would just like to highlight certain important notes for 1st timers travelling to this place on their own via public transport.

Getting to this place :
1. Alight at Dongzhimen station(Line 2). Exit C or E(am not too sure abt C but even if you exit wrongly, just backtrack via underpass or cross the road).
2. Once on street level, there's a building on your left wz KFC outet. The entrance to the Bus Terminal(if I can recall correctly, the terminal is called Beijing Transportation Hub) is to the right of KFC - refer to 1st pic.
3. Walk straight in(follow the signboard for bus service 980 bay). Abt 50-75 metres in, you will arrive at 980 bay - refer to 2nd & 3rd pics. ***Pls note there are 2 types of service - fast & slow. I believe it's express & non express services. Be sure you're in the 'express' lane or that you board the 'express' bus. Both wl get you to Miyun where Nanshan is located but of course, express service is a lot better!.
4. Tap your transport card - it costs abt RMB6 for the ride. ***You must tap out when alighting.
5. *** Xida Bridge is the 1st stop in Miyun. The journey shud take abt an hour, plus/minus 10 mins. So, be prepared to alight! - we were caught unaware & had to scramble our stuff as the bus was about to move on!. We were lucky coz we heard someone calling out to passengers to Nanshan Ski Resort to alight at this stop. There are total of 13 bus stops from Xida Bridge(1st stop from Beijing) to the bus terminal(the other end of town - roughly around 25mins travel time).
6. Catch a cab - around RMB20/car to Nanshan Ski Resort. Journey is abt 10-13mins.
7. Entrance fee to ski resort is RMB20/pax.

On return trip fm ski resort to Beijing - repeat the abv reverse manner. However, wud liked to point out a few important notes :-

1. Make an appointment with the cab driver to pick you up for returned trip. We hah arranged for the driver to pick us up at the same place where he had dropped us at Nanshan ski resort 4 hrs later.
2. Take the cab to the bus terminal instead of to Xida Bridge where you had alight. This is to ensure you have a seat for the return journey back to Beijing. Remember, there are 13 stops from terminal to Xida bridge(last stop when going back to Beijing). You wouldn't want to stand for the hour plus ride back to Beijing!. The bus terminal is just at the other end of town from Xida Bridge.
3. The cab fare may cost a little more than say, back to Xida Bridge but it's worth the extras coz the bus was all filled up even before reaching the stop at Xida Bridge.
4. *** The last bus to leave the bus terminal at Miyun to Beijing is at 1730hrsLT.

Hope the above will be of some help especially for 1st timers who wish to make their own way to Nanshan Ski Resort fm Beijing via public transport.

Cheers!-virgopq.

We skied before in other parts of the world so the BJ experience was kind of a shock on the first day, compared to all the other countries where we spent our ski holidays before (Switzerland, Korea, Japan, and even ClubMed Yabuli in China!!!)

We booked a 3 nights stay in the Shirton Chalet and checked in on Dec. 31. Never saw so MANY skiers in my whole life (later found out it was the beginning of the holiday, but was still at regular price).

We spent more than an hour for ski rental (then regretted not bringing our own to save time). It was a very chaotic system. You even have to line up for a locker key. I asked why not install lockers with a small coin machine then somebody reminded me no 5-yuan or 10 yuan coin in China (no wonder I have not seen any on supermarket shopping carts!).

After an hour of struggling, we finally went skiing! A good variety of slopes, which made us forget about the hassle earlier but were disappointed again when we got to the chairlift stations because there were millions of people. Anyway, once we were up on the mountain, and were away from the major crowds, we felt more comfortable. Chairlifts not bad.

When we returned the rental at the end of the day, it was an even more chaotic experience than in the morning. Everybody was rushing and was very tired but you still had to line up for at least 20 minutes, then after returning the boots and the skis, you have to line up again for helmets and then again for the lock keys!!! (we did ask for a three day rental for our stay, but obviously this resort caters more for day trip skiers, so we had to go through the whole process again and again for the next 2 days!!!!!)

The next day was very different. It was New Year Day. Not many people came skiing. Good news for us as most people partied the night before and perhaps were also waiting for the next few days to ski (it was more crowded on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3).

No same day skiing and snowboarding during the public holidays, for one price. As we stayed there longer, we got smarter. The third day when we did the rental, we got up earlier and waited to be the first few people, and ASKED for new equipments. We were given brand new stuff as they were still available. And anyway, before the staff got really tired with all the tourists, they were more friendly.

Indoor restaurants warm enough but only serve chinese food. Lots of beach lounge chairs for non-skiers. Outdoor picnic tables available.

We did not encounter the greedy coaches mentioned in the other reports. Lots of signs on the wall to show learners that the coaches are not allowed to request tips, or you can file a complaint. We did tip the coach for our daughter's snowboarding lessons. The first coach hinted that RMB100 was still too low. Then I said but there were signs that we don't have to tip, if we dont' want to. And I said anyway, it was her first day so my daughter didn't even get on the chairlift to the greater slopes. She then said ok.

The second day we had another coach to take my daughter up on a chairlift to the slope. He did have to make a bigger effort to hold a teenager a lot of times when she snowboarded downhill (even she is already a very good skier from young ages.) So we planned to tip him the same at the end of the lesson. However, he was in such a big rush that he didn't even stay to take our tip. He was very good that even he was very late, he didn't just leave my teenager at the bottom of the hill, and just deserted her there, even she was old enough to go back to the ski school.)

We also didn't see any nagging coaches following us all the time as in the other reports (guess because we can all ski so nobody bother wasting time to follow us).

My advice: Nanshan is ok for a day trip, if you are visitng BJ for other reasons, or if you live there. For us, we plan to go back to Yabuli to ski, or try other less crowded resorts, even more expensive.

Another advice if you are hiring a coach: Our first coach, who attempted to ask for a bigger tip, started counting the teaching time from the moment we started chatting with her, even I paid at the cashier almost 40 minutes later. I didn't know that until an hour before the expected end time of the lesson, she already brought my daughter back to the ski school! So the next morning when we hired another coach, I talked to the principal about the duration, and was guaranteed the whole duration I paid for.

I bought a season pass and I was enjoying my second visit this year when I fell down and dislocated my shoulder badly. It was the most painful felling I had ever felt. I waited laid down in ice for several minutes and I was not far from some staffs, but nobody came to help. Then I realized that no help would come and I walked for more then 10 min until the clinic. When the nurse saw my situation she said, go to the hospital we are not doctors I don't know what to do. After that a friend of mine came and drove me to the hospital. After 1 hour driving we reached the hospital and the doctor said that any nurse should know how to repositioning a dislocated shoulder and I should not be suffering for so long.
Very bad service and medical assistance.

Last weekend we visited Nanshan Ski Village as my husband wanted to see what skiing in Beijing was liked compared to back home in Scotland.

We went with some of his work colleagues [one family with two young sons]. We arrived about 10.30am and it was very busy already; however once inside you didn’t notice. We had agreed to meet back at the minibus no later than 2pm, so that give us plenty of time to explore.

My husband, booked for a two-hour skiing slot with hire of boots and skis; the attendants all spoke good English and were very helpful. He tried out his equipment with a few runs on the beginners slope and was happy with the quality provided. Then he was off on the big runs. His one disappointment was that it was not real snow but at least that means that you can ski without having to rely on the weather.

As I don’t ski; while he was off enjoying the runs; I had time to explore. It was a very sunny day and lovely to be able to wander around and get a bit of a tan. The Red Bull snow boarding competition was being held and it was great to be able to watch the professionals as well as the amateurs.

We all had a great day out; everyone enjoyed their skiing, had great fun on the rubber rings, hiding in the igloos or [in my case] just relaxing.

Visited on 9 Dec 2018. My 2 teenage boys had loads of fun. The facilities (ski attire/lockers) are quite complete. They even have medic and recovery team who act quite fast when anyone falls. Those not skiing can wait at the cafe (indoor & outdoor).

The only gripe is the shuttle bus operates by Nanshan Ski. They only accept payment via WeChat on the phone and as foreign tourists, we are not able to do so. Fortunately our guide from the previous day to Great Wall helped us to book using her account.

The whole place was crowded. But other than my family and 2 other foreigners we saw, all the other visitiors are locals.:)

1h30 drive from Beijing.
You can reserve tickets entrance in advance in order to have a discount.
Expect to pay around 300 RMB per person that includes entrance and equipment and 4 hours is more than enough if you are a begginner.

This place is about an hour's drive from the airport. It should be noted that the reviewer is not a mandarin speaker which I'm sure would have helped! There's a 20 RMB entrance fee, not a big deal.

Staff were mainly friendly but English was very limited. I purchased a 3 hour pass (180 RMB) which was more than ample for intermediate/advanced level skiing given the limited length/grading of runs. There are only two black runs in any case. When you purchase the pass, a square piece of paper is given to you with a plastic flexi strap. The idea is to loop this to your jacket as the resort doesn't use electronic passes.

Equipment hire was quite basic, don't expect high quality equipment or advanced skis. Be prepared for smelly boots, it would seems like they are seldom cleaned, if at all. They have a strange system where your foot size determines your ski length so it can be quite basic. Asking/getting a longer length of ski for a given foot size was difficult and the staff seemed somewhat confused.

Toilet facilities were ample but quite dirty.

On a more positive note, it's a cheap day out to get some skiing in. Just don't expect western standards and you'll be ok.

Have fun!

This is a very well run Ski Resort. The staff are helpful, there is usually someone around to assist with English.

The Ski Patrol and attendants at the chairlifts and T Bars are very attentive and helpful.

A great day for beginners and intermediate skiers, one advanced slope. A good number of chairlifts ensures some variety in skiing.

Food is OK, with a selection of Chinese and Western. Good Coffee is available (important!).

Make a booking in advance to enjoy lower charges!
