This is a memorial square which is good for a quick photo stop especially since it is close by the Forbidden City.

Very large memorial square with the entrance to the Forbidden City to the North and Mao's tomb to the South. The Beijing National Museum is to the East and is much more interesting than the square itself. As long as the line isn't too long you can file past Mao's body in his mausoleum but there isn't much to see.…

You can't miss this. This entrance will lead you to the Forbidden city. On top of the entrance is the iconic portrait of Chairman Mao, flanked on both sides by Chinese words.

The sheer size and impact of the square and the buildings is quite breathtaking. The architecture and historical facts surrounding the square made it a very special tourist destination. Viewing this building through a Westerner's eyes was quite fascinating, especially all the security which is subtle but very evident. Unfortunately the day we went, it was 47 deg C so remember to take hats and water in summer. …
