Looming over the city's most famous square, Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian'an Men) stands as a globally known symbol of China. Originally built in the 1400s, the gate long served as one of the Forbidden City's entrances.

The gate of Heavenly Peace is one the main way to access to the Forbidden City. This is really impressive and when the night is coming, it is very suggestive especially for photographers with tripod (by the way allowed).

We were unaware that you needed passports for the Forbidden City so just did the gate. Cost was 15 yuan and you can go up and get a great view over Tiananmen which gives you a great perspective for how vast the square really is.

Tiananmen Square is a big place. It was crowded the day that we were there, so you could begin to understand the energy that must inhabit the square when it is packed. Some beautiful buildings around the square itself to enjoy.

Tian'anmen Square is the largest public square in the world. This particular building is inspiring. All the building were beautiful.

As part of the Forbidden City it can be appreciated more by having an audio guide to explain the history.

We visited during the day and then having been all around it we decided to go back for the evening viewing that we really enjoyed. When fully lit it looks wonderful. If you have time on a route from hotel to restaurant take a detour and see it.

Like thousands of other tourists, we lined up to take the obligatory selfies of us visiting the Gate. This is the classic Beijing photograph and is on the emblem of the People's Republic of China. We found it quicker to get through security on the Tiananmen Square side of the street and then crossed over through the underground walkway before... More

You can spend several hours exploring this elaborate layout. There is a fantastic tea shop just to the rear, too.

Tian'an Men or the Gate of Heavenly Peace is at the North of the Tiananmen Square. From here you can enter the Imperial City respectively enter the Forbidden City. There are several entrances - sometimes this is referred to as the front entrance, in some of literature I also found the Meridan Gate being the front (main) entrance. If someone... More
