We visited a traditional house in Baochao nearby the Confucius Temple. It is in a neighbourhood cluster of gray brickwall with narrow alley. A hutong culture synonymous with Old Beijing.

We entered a large wooden red door with brass lionhead knob. There are four houses and a open courtyard in a quadrangle area. A miniature model was shown to us. In the front house is a family alter.Bedrooms are in the side houses.Kitchen was located to where we entered and exited. A small pavilion at the center courtyard served as a resident's meeting point.

After that , we took a trishaw ride around the Baochao Hutong. There are pubs , cafes , entertainment outlets and karaoke lounges along the way. We were told it was a former red light districts during the Qing dynasty.

Baochao is an interesting Hutong street located near Nanluoguxiang and the Drum & Bell Towers.

Its in a traditional neighborhood area with a smattering of quirky shops, restaurants & cafes and old style hutong shops. Its a vibrant narrow street and not as busy or as trendy as nearby NanluoGuxiang and is relatively tourist free.

There is a little shop called Paris-Perkin which was a totally unexpected find - its has a French theme with old postcards, antiques & Parisian mementos.
Modernista is a cozy cafe / bar and they have Tapas for eats.

Mr Shi's Dumplings has wonderful atmosphere with a staggering range of dumplings and a good menu. It has a very friendly vibe. There are not many tables but the wait wont be long if they are full. Or if you want Yunnan style food try Dali Renjia or Southern Barbarian for BBQ.

If you want to wander away from Baochao Hutong there are similar style shops and places to eat that you can find between the Drum & Bell towers and Beiluoguxiang. Its a very interesting hutong neighborhood to explore by foot.

If you want to see the old culture of Beijing, you must visit this place. This is located just beside the main city. You can see old houses, old streets, very calm and quiet. Not so much crowded with tourists. Some people allow visitors inside their house to see and feel that ancient atmosphere. Not many people or guide suggested about this, but I feel this is a must visit in Beijing. You can avail rickshaw or bicycle. This will take just half of the day, but worth it.

i stayed in this area during my beijing trip. so i had three whole days to roam around and experience the real feel of the area.
i had a walk daily evening through the hutong area, the bell tower, the drum tower till the lake with dinner on my walk back in one of the amazing restaurants of the numerous places.
this is the most interesting part of the city according to me. there are lots of rickshaw ride tours, which lots of people were taking. but i just loved walking and taking everything in at my own pace. would love to stay here again, if i am ever back in beijing.

Easy to go there by subway. Many rickshaw riders peddling for business. Unique way to go about in the streets. Went inside a “preserved” village and the owner explained some history behind her house. Should try Mr Shi’s Dumpling if you are here.
