If you're staying near the Wangfujing area, I highly recommend stopping by St. Joseph's Cathedral, especially at night. Yes, you might find locals performing in the courtyard which adds to the experience. But if you're lucky enough to be there on a Sunday afternoon, do stop by for the English service/mass time. Afterwards, you get to see the Cathedral lit up at night which is gorgeous. There's a lot of history here and I was fortunate that a different tour guide was telling me about the church being built in the 1600s, being destroyed by an earthquake and a fire but each time it being rebuilt. Even if you're shopping nearby, do stop by and just admire the views outside the Cathedral.

Walking around the corner from Sunworld Hotel, to Wangfujing Street, you will come upon the St Joseph's Church.
Finished in 1905 it has been opened and closed multiple times during the Mao Zedong Era. The new atheistic regime broke off all diplomatic relations with the Holy See two years later, and attempted to eliminate all forms of religion by either seizing or destroying churches and other places of worship. St. Joseph's suffered the same fate and in the 1950s, it was expropriated to the government, who then turned it into an elementary school. The communist government further tightened their control on the Catholic Church in China by establishing the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA) in 1957. As a result, the church of St. Joseph's has been under the administration of the CPCA since that year and its parish priests are not recognized by the Vatican.
The church was closed down altogether in 1966—the first year of the Cultural Revolution—and suffered further damage during this period of time until the end of the revolution in 1976

I wanted to find a Catholic Church for Sunday Mass. my hotel was on Wangfujing Street, St. Joseph's is right on this main thoroughfare.
I had a tough time online finding a Mass schedule. Fortunately, they have great signage, including in English. As an FYI, their Sunday schedule is 6:15 AM, 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM in Chinese and 4:00 PM in English. I've included a photo.
During the day, the Church is open for visits.

The Wangfujing Cathedral, also named St. Joseph's Wangfujing Cathedral is a historic Catholic cathedral located in downtown Beijing, near Wangfujing. I saw it at night, and it is beautiful with all those lights.. In front of it there are a lot o people dancing, playing or just staying. Good place for photos.
I visited it a few times. Once, in day time, there was a wedding ceremony going on. I must say it was a little weird for me, because they have their own way of doing it..

We managed to enjoy the outside only of this fantastic church in a great area of tourism. Located among mega malls of Beijing, Wangfujing street and a short walk from our hotel, Tian Anmen square and so many more locations. We will post more when we manage to see the inside. If it's as nice as the outside, it would indeed be stunning. Oh, I almost forgot, the kids out the front dancing was what got our attention in the first place. Hmm. A video sound like a good idea next time.

I am happy to have visited this church and was able to pray inside with the mass for a Catholic. It was beside our hotel and had a nice view on our hotel room. i passed by this Cathedral every time we go to the shopping district of Wangfujing. It is located at Wangfujing Avenue. And old style churches with great views a nice one for me. A beautiful Church indeed for us Catholic.

I attended 4pm English mass last Sunday and I sat close by the small choir. Their voices are just so amazing and it's such a great joy to be there. It was my first time attending a mass in China and all parts were smooth. Masses in all Catholic churches follow the same routine and the only exception here is the main singer performed particularly well and made awesome contribution to our worship.
As most places for worship, those sleeveless dressed were asked to cover their arms.

My husband and I attended a mass here in the morning to celebrate our anniversary.
As a Catholic, I am happy to find a beautiful church in the middle of a shopping district in Beijing. Though it is a busy place the church was kept solemn and peaceful.

I attended the English Sunday mass at 4 pm and it was crowded. Temperature was cool inside the church. Spacious courtyard in front of church for photo taking. Not too far walking distance from subway station.
