I did the Least Least Visited Countries (LVC) with Young Pioneer Tours (YPT) in December 2024/January 2025.
YPT caters to a niche of travelers who desire unique destinations that are off the beaten track. This tour certainly fit that bill. There was a wide range of nationalities and ages represented on the tour - travelers from the UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, USA, Ireland, Canada, Mexico and Brazil took part, the youngest in their 30's and the eldest tour member being 80 years old.
The Good: YPT has somehow managed to piece together an almost impossible logistical undertaking across 11 infrequently visited Pacific Islands using its experience in the region and extensive network of local contacts. The chances of creating such an itinerary solo is next to nil, and I have come across no other company that offers this itinerary. During the trip, we experienced some fascinating history, scenery, culture, and pacific islanders that will live long in my memory.
The Bad: with so many moving parts and reliance on local suppliers in countries where tourism is still developing, there were occasional delays and miscommunications. Standards of accommodation and transport inevitably vary widely by country and availability. However for me, a certain level of unpredictability is all part of the charm of this type of trip and is to be embraced. Also, the trip was not cheap, but given that it covers 11 countries and up to 20 separate flights, it's a competitive price for what is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Bottom line: If you like all-inclusive cruise packages, romantic getaways, and five star hotels and restaurants, this tour is not for you. If you enjoy once-in-a-lifetime trips where the journey is the destination and you get to see and do things that most people will never get to experience, then this trip will meet those expectations and more.

I did the Transnistria National Day & Gagauzia Tour with YPT. This was my first travel with YPT after eyeing their tours for a little while.
Our guide Ravi was an excellent host, he always made sure everybody was enjoying his time. He often would stay up late in the night joining the group for drinks and staying up with the most tireless, but he was also the first in the lobby to welcome everybody (the guy never sleeps).
I would recommend doing their tours and I'm already checking which will be my next tour with them.
Unfortunately some things really bothered me and I think it's important to mention them.
First of all it was supposed to be a Transnistria National day tour. I would have expected to spend all day in the cities of Tiraspol and Bender. Tasting the local shashlik, drinking some local wine, mingling with the locals (who were really friendly btw). Instead we barely spent time there, we almost missed the (hugely reduced) parade because the local guide (an American expat) didn't mention when it would start.
Most of the planning wasn't followed or adapted to suit the local guide, and although I enjoyed the experience, I would have liked to see what I came for, that being the festivities for National day in an unrecognized country.
But once again our guide Ravi made sure we would enjoy our evening and arranged free time at night, so we could wander around Tiraspol and see some of the festivities. In the evening he told us to join him in a true USSR restaurant, we had some drinks and partied with the locals which was pretty awesome.
The most underwhelming part of the trip was Gagauzia. The only interesting thing we saw was a statue of Attaturk and another one of Lenin facing each other (quite strange).
I was expecting a nice ending, a feast with locals, drinks, good food like the itinerary mentioned. In fact all we had was some bad wine in plastic bottles and 1 cold sausage, not a local to be seen anywhere. In fact we haven't seen a single local, not a single Gagauzian Babushka in traditional clothes or a traditional house or restaurant.
On my google maps I could see we where 200 meters away from a Gagaouzian themed restaurant. In fact I can't tell you anything that would be typically Gagaouzian because we learned and saw nothing.
Once again I can't blame Ravi for it, this "feast with locals" was organized by the local partner. The feast being a sausage, some coleslaw and some gnarly tasting red wine.
It might seem like a very negative review but I enjoyed 90% of this trip, YPT is an amazing agency, the guide Ravis was great. I would really recommend YPT to look for another local partner that would respect the itinerary and would have some connections with locals.

This was our first trip with YPT, straight from the beginning of the booking process, Ravi (Also our tour guide) was quick to respond to my queries via email, helping me get the trip booked easily.
We absolutely loved our trip, we had a great group of 10 who we toured with, and who we got to know well over the 3 days.
Ravi is a great guide, really organised, proactive in ensuring group members were happy and being catered for, he’s knowledgeable about the places we visited also. I found it impressive how quickly he got to know the members of the group without any awkward introductions etc.
It’s obvious he’s built up good relations with the local guides we used and local restaurants/bars we went to, which was really noticeable.
The trip overall exceeded our expectations, we somewhat didn’t know what to fully expect but in truth it was one of the best trips and best experiences we’ve had whilst on holiday.
The places we visited, the people we met(locals included) the tour guides throughout the trip, the food we ate and the overall hospitality we received, were excellent.
Based on this trip with YPT alone, I’ve no doubt we will book another trip with them in the future.
In terms of this trip, if you’re looking for a somewhat surreal experience, where you get to learn loads about different cultures, see some really interesting places, meet great people, then this is the tour to book, 10/10 would recommend.

I joined YPT's Transnistria Victory Day tour in May 2024, which was an amazing experience from start to finish.
On day 1, our guide Ravi took us to an off the beaten track (and secret) location for beers to break the ice and enjoy the views, which really helped the group to gel.
The rest of the itinerary involved an ideal mix of natural, historical, cultural and military sites. Highlights included a traditional Moldavian homestay, a whisky distillery, an abandoned Soviet-era nuclear bunker and, of course, the victory day festivities in Tiraspol.
Having actually lived in Transnistria, Ravi had an impressive knowledge of various sites and an uncanny ability to direct us to the best, and often hidden, Soviet mosaics and artefacts. He also made a real effort throughout the trip to organise group visits to bars and restaurants, which meant the tour involved more alcohol consumption than I had anticipated! Ravi is a real asset to YPT, and given how much I enjoyed the Transnistria tour I am already looking into other Soviet tours run by him.
Our local guides in Transnistria, Maria and Dmitri, were also excellent, and it is obvious that they have a real passion for their jobs and really care about their clients. Their wealth of knowledge was a real asset, and they were able to provide in-depth answers to all of our questions - no matter what topic they were on.
Overall I would highly recommend the tour, which certainly surpassed my expectations.

The Baltic tour was a wonderful group experience. In just one week, we managed to explore all three countries. What I appreciated the most was the opportunity to visit each of the capital cities and immerse ourselves in their unique atmospheres, while also getting a glimpse of the countryside as we traveled extensively by car with excellent guides.
The theme of the trip revolved around Soviet history. We had the chance to see and learn about many buildings and statues from that era, even though several have been removed over the years.
I highly recommend the Baltic tour to anyone interested in exploring the Baltic countries in a well-organized and efficient way. The focus on Soviet-related history also leads you to fascinating and less-traveled places. For instance, in Estonia, we visited Sillamäe, a town that was closed off during the Soviet era. It’s a remarkable destination with Soviet-era architecture and is definitely not part of a typical tourist itinerary.

I am going to cut to the chase on this one. YPT is arguably the best travel company to experience the places where you will need some support. As someone who normally does not enjoy group travel, they are the exception. I have not been disappointed with YPT in the two times I have had the good fortune to travel with them, and I look forward to the next time.
I specifically recommend their 5-Stan tour which is the confluence of value and quality. They have a fantastic guide in Caitlin G who, through her incredible organizational skills, allowed our traveling contingent to wake up and follow an itinerary without ever sweating the details. Whether crossing the borders or going out on excursions, the logistics worked and the experiences magical.
I recommend YPT for anyone needing that managed traveling experience especially when you're going where 'your mother wouldn't want you to go'.

I had an unforgettable experience on my trip to Cuba, thanks to YPT. From start to finish, the itinerary was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to explore Cuba’s rich history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Visiting Che’s mausoleum was a deeply moving experience, and the locals we met along the way left a lasting impression with their warmth and hospitality.
The guides Alister and Kris were knowledgeable, approachable, and passionate about sharing the stories of this beautiful country. Everything — from accommodations to transportation — was seamless, making the entire trip enjoyable and stress-free.
Thank you, YPT, for an incredible journey. I highly recommend their services to anyone looking to explore Cuba in an authentic and meaningful way!

Visiting remote islands in South Atlantic was in my plans for 2025 but back home from holidays I saw YPT offering this trip starting March 2024 and had to take it for some personal reasons. One, a YPT group for such a long journey could be made up of those guys interested more in adventures than bird watching for hours, standing still. Anyway I also love birds but my goal was to reach those lost pieces of land surrounded by the Atlantic waters. We had several seadays to get to South Georgia from Ushuaia and then much more to Tristan da Cunha Archipelago and its satellite islands. Then we sailed to Saint Helena, maybe more famous now after the Napoleon movie and Ascension island, where we spent a night facing the harbor and our landing was suspended by the military authorities. More days at sea and ship being coated by the sand of Sahara on its route to Cape Verde. If you like weather contrasts, this is your trip to experience freezing waters with seals and penguins to 30 Celsius around the Equator line and to watch more than birds flying around and see those stars you heard from your teacher. By the way, for those not aware, the staff in the ship educate us with lectures and their extreme efforts in pleasing us passengers with information and riding those amazing zodiacs to the spots.
Since the first contact with YPT, they responded quickly and (Morgan) got me a cabin upgrade to same deck of the dining room. My cabin mate, great guy (Giovani) was a nice company for the long trip and a friend that I made for the rest of my life. The other YPT guy in charge of being our tour leader (biased to talk about Josh) set a meeting in a bar in Ushuaia for a coffee before boarding, was very friendly and I am sure that the bill was not in the account of YPT but on himself.Reminding this first contact of strangers, very formal with hand shakes, short introductions, days on the sea and in the islands, several meals together, we became a team, other passengers got jealous of our table and wanting to join us. Much of this caused by the charisma of Josh, a well seasoned guy forged in Cs since the beginning. I was before in a trip like this in Hondius for 3 weeks on my own but this time I have dear friends. I am glad that I did it this year instead of waiting 2025 to come up.

Great tour. Although it's expensive, the cost savings compared to booking the same exact itinerary on your own are significant. All travel / daily activities planned for you, no wasted days. Plus due to the company's strong relationship with local airlines we managed to get on a last minute replacement flight when our original flight was cancelled, which avoided us missing a country. For anybody trying to visit all the Pacific islands in a relatively short time period this tour is a great alternative to planning everything on your own.

I just finished an 8 day YPT tour to Türkmenistan and it was incredible. I highly recommend it. The tour was awesome from start to finish. There were a few minor changes to the itinerary throughout but this was for the benefit of the group and YPT sets these expectations before you book.
Our local guide Maks was great, very chill but also great at delivering the right level of information and making sure we were always accommodated with a beer in hand.
The YPT tour leader Caitlin was excellent, she ensured all of the people on the trip were happy and enjoying themselves. Everyone in the group loved her.
I will definitely travel with YPT again, hopefully to Socotra and North Korea. Thanks YPT for an amazing adventure

Can you go if you are an American but also have dual citizenship with an European country?
Written 6 February 2018
Yes. But our guides had mentioned that it’s best to use the other non-American passport for traveling into and out of DPRK. Best to email YPT and check with them directly

Hi, guys! We also plan to make North Korea trip with YPT and no standing at the point of no return - when we need to make big international money bank transfer, actually getting nothing - no contract, no paper from YPT in exchange. Is it common practice here? We just need to trust them, that in case of some difficulties (closed border, visa rejection etc) they will return us our money? Thanks for answer.
Written 27 November 2017
Hi Anna,
Our terms and conditions are clear that you will receive a full refund if the visa is refused through no fault of your own. (If you've given incorrect information or not disclosed any published articles etc about North Korea you've produced, you will not receive a refund- as noted in our Terms of Travel agreement we sent to you).
We will return your money if the border is closed or the tour cancelled for any reason, this is also noted in our terms and conditions.
If a contract would make you more comfortable before making the transfer, please send us one to your liking and we'll sign it providing it doesn't contradict our provided T & C or travel agreement.
Generally our invoices/receipts perform that role, but we are happy to do that for your peace of mind.
Regards,
Troy

Hello,
Quick question regarding US-travelers.
Is it still possible to book a YPT tour even though one has a US-citizenship? The website says yes, however a recent Facebook post says differently.
I would appreciate responses from either a staff member or past travelers.
Thanks in advance
Tim

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your question. To help clarify we don't take Americans on tours to North Korea wether they are dual citizens or not, especially now that there is a congressional ban on travel for US citizens in place. If you have any further questions please feel free to drop us an email.
Thanks,
Troy

The capital tour builds your base (remember you take a few day trips up to 2 hours away). The north east is further off the beaten path.
In the US - it would be like going to Washington DC or New York City vs going to Dallas or Denver. While unique in their own way, Dallas and Denver are still secondary stops on a US tour whereas DC and NYC give the intro to the America people see on television. Just my opinion :)
