    The emperor's experience
My 2nd visit to this place in 1st week of 2024. Didn't get to take the ferry as the lake is frozen. My kid enjoyed the ice skating instead. I like the walk at Suzhou Street, along the corridor and around the lake. It was really crowded and there are no restaurant in the area. If you are interested to learn a bit of history, then you will probably enjoy visiting this place.

Behind on upkeep but still a gem.
Although the paint work is fading on several of the buildings, it is still a beautiful place to visit, and a must-see during a trip to Beijing. As with many sites in Beijing, and China in general, you need to avoid the scam "tour guides" who hang around the entrance gates, book your tickets early, online, to make sure you can visit, and you need to be patient with the thousands of other tourists, local and foreign, who bump, push and rush their way around the main few areas of the park. Go to some of the quieter areas, take a walk around the lake, its a truely magnificent place.

Beautiful, sprawling garden, must-see in Beijing!
This is a massive summer vacation site for Empress Dowager Cixi, and it's a sight to behold. Lovely gardens and sprawling landscape. It's impossible to explore fully within the day, we spent half a day and did half the trail instead. We entered via Beigongmen station from the North gate. It's a rather demanding hike up to the top rewarded with views of the temple, then a sloped walk down to the lakes. The boat ride is a must-do for a vast view of the area. You have to make a reservation to visit the palace, and keep to the time to visit the museum section of the premise, they are quite strict with the timing.

Palace which looks like a temple
Be prepared for long walks and steps. The place is awesome in the morning and easily accessible by metro. There are very few snack options so bring your own. Use the map to avoid getting lost. Go to the top for breathtaking views.

My Summer Palace tour in Spring
I had a good time walking around Summer Palace. Even though it is crowded by tourists the Palace is huge and beautiful with a lot of blooming trees and flowers. Thanks to Jily from Mubus for touring me around and ride the boat with me. She was very hard working and a wonderful person. This is my 2nd tour with Jily and both trips are wonderful.

    The peaceful parts are wonderful
We entered at the west gate and left from the east gate, which was a good thing to do. Most of the tourist stuff is around the east gate. Painfully packed, even in an off day, with large tour groups and screaming guides. But the area away from that is a tranquil park. It is long walks. Don’t count on buying a meal.

    Nice day!
The place is historical. Both locals and tourists visit this place, that's why it's always crowded. I spent couples of hours there. It's too big, so the whole day you can walk around and explore many useful things.

    Very well planned
Joy was amazing and made sure that my daughter was able to see the pandas along with the Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace. At first it didn't look like it was going to happen but she was able to pull it off. Andy was our guide for the day and he was a definite 10 for tour guides. He was knowledgeable, full of energy even after a very long and hot day. He was friendly and his English was great. Very funny too. Highly recommend him.

    Beautiful Summer Palace
As soon as we went through the East Gate gate and laid eyes on Kunming Lake we knew we would love this park like attraction. We rode the boat and saw amazing views, walked the long corridor, saw the marble boat and went to Suzhou Street which was a must for our trip. Everywhere we went in this park the view was always beautiful. We only had time for enjoy the park for a few hours but I definitely could imagine spending the whole day to truly appreciate and explore all the grounds.

Getting from the Begin Center is possible with a subway coming close to the entrance.
We preferred to take a taxi to get to the area..
Taxi cost about 15 euros from Park Hyatt.
The place is amazing
Huge that you can't see all the museums in one day.
It is worth staying here all day and in between to take a break from going up to one building to another.
There are enough places everywhere to rest and eat something and clean toilets.
Walk around the lake and reach the bridges that cross it at spectacular points.
Take a boat and sail on the lake.
They take a deposit that at the end of the time is returned, there is a separate line for a refund.
There are pedal boats, I preferred them and there are boats with a motor that are of course more expensive.
Take something small to eat and drink and enjoy the magical atmosphere of the place

We visited here in December 2020 and enjoyed our visit. The closest metro is at the North Gate but we found entering the East Gate was the best for walking and seeing everything. We had booked a tour guide in the morning to see the great wall and asked them to drop us off at the East Gate.

Much of this area is wonderful reconstruction and it is a pretty straight forward path to see everything. In December some of the walking paths were closed but the sights were still very nice. It is important to note that there is a temple which is the focal point of many pictures that is closed on Mondays!

Entry to this area is 20 RMB and there are quite a few restaurants you can sit in that have excellent views of the lake and scenery.

We will definitely have to come back here in the summer to enjoy the walk a bit more!

Going here, we took line 4 to Xiyuan station exit C. Turn left upon exit then go straight.

We were lucky that there were no que for purchasing of tickets or I guess it was really off-peak season. We rent audio guide for RMB 40 and RMB 50 as deposit.

There are bus station near summer palace which is about 500 meters only away from the palace. Via subway, it was more than 1km walk so wear very comfortable shoes as the place is really rally huge. We spent 4 hours in the palace but we still can't tour the entire place because aside from it's really huge, boats were not in service(winter).

We just visited half of the palace. I suggest not to avail the audio as it was not that useful anyway since you can't tour the entire place by winter.

It was still worth the visit, summer palace is really beautiful and vast.

The Summer Palace is both a historic museum and a very nice park. If you take the long walk around the entire lake you get about 7 kms of exercise and some splendid views. Come early, especially on weekends, because this place gets crowded when the weather is nice.

In January, the lake is teeming with ice skaters, the footpaths winding down to the lake pass through conifer forest but are relatively quiet, the Summer Palace is a must see for Chinese families and foreigners alike. Ancient miniature cypress trees are protected from the cold by temporary winter greenhouses. A truly massive ornamental rock sits outside the Empress's residence, hauled there by the Qianlong Emperor. Some wonderful ceramics were on display during our visit. Access to the imperial quarters is limited, leaving visitors to peer in the windows.

Unless you love massive crowds, I highly recommend going when it’s freezing. It’s just as pretty, and the water views are spectacular. Plus, you can avoid some of the crowds. Oh and use a driver since parking can be extremely challenging.

This palace outside of Beijing is a pretty garden area surrounding a large man made lake upon which you can row rental boats or ice skate in the winter. There is a very long covered walkway along one side of the lake with beautiful lookout areas. It was built to give the emperor a place to walk out of the rain or sun and has hundreds of old paintings running along the roof line. There are a number of picturesque bridges and here you will find a very large white marble boat that looks like it is floating on the water but really is not. A nice interlude from the hustle and bustle of Beijing.

Grab a metro train out to the outskirts of Beijing and you'll find the entrance to the grounds of the Summer palace, what was once the holiday home of the Chinese royals hundreds of years ago. Once you buy your ticket and get in you'll find a bridge across a long river filled with old boats and bright flags; then the bridge will lead you up to the palace as it sits on a high hill. It's not just a palace, it also has a temple filled with golden statues of monks lined up side by side; you'll also find classical architecture such as curved roofs and bright colours like yellow and red, classic Chinese colours. From the palace itself you can see a huge lake with an island in the middle and old bridges that lead to it and boats ferrying people across and then long paths going around the lake. Go down to the lake and you'll see the old bridges with tiny statues of lions lining up along, each one designed beautifully. On the central island you'll see a nice mix of nature and architecture and even a statue of the mythical dragon emperor. Walk around the lake you'll find long and high bridges, huge pagodas painted beautifully, long trees hanging above the water and the cool water itself at the centre of it all. As the name would suggest, summer is the best time to come for a visit.

We have been there several times over the years and still have not seen half of it. This time we managed to get there and back by subway, and started to get an idea of how to plan a visit. The lake shore is always busy but one can always get on the hills where you have a much better panorama and more quietness. Many convenient eating places. Amazing glimpse into the extravagances of the past but grateful for the intricate buildings fantastical gardens and gorgeous scenery. Someone wearing traditional long dress playing the flute in the pagoda that juts into the lake. One of the ideas of scholarship of old.

We visited in Sept 2019. I recommend starting on the North entrance and working your way South. There are some good hills in this park, and we definitely got sweaty. Beautiful architecture and landscaping. The royal family had essentially and outdoor art gallery where the wooden overhead beams are painted with different art scenes. We didn't have time, but you can rent a boat to drive yourself around the lake, which sounds fun and relaxing! There is a lot of history and beauty in the place.
