Place was pleasant and had a beautiful sunset view but the wine tasting was a total bust. Not coming back.

The place is weird, surreal and totally insane. A huge vineyard with a castle being used as a wine museum. A whole fake European village built next to it all an hour or so from Beijing. The place is abandoned and strange. So much potential but most of it is closed due to lack of business. Empty shops and restaurants selling nothing but wine. No snacks, toiletries or anything else... just deserted wine shops. There were two restaurants which were both pretty bad. We stayed in the a deluxe suite, one of the most expensive rooms available. The room itself was lovely. A very good rip-off of tacky, opulent, over the top, French poshness. Getting into the room however was quite the battle. Upon arrival we tried to check in, the staff looked shocked that foreigners were even there, they had no idea what to do with us, I speak Chinese, but they were still confused, staring at our booking confirmation for forever and a dozen attempts at finding our name in the computer. My boyfriend had his passport and gave it to them, then they asked for mine. I didn't have it as this trip was a surprise for me, I don't carry it with me all the time (obviously). The receptionist just looked at me and said "Well you cant stay here". Just like that. After paying $200 for a car and driver for the return trip. Spending an hour and a half on the road, she refused to check us in. We had paid for the room (one of the most expensive, mind you), we had booked it in my boyfriend's name and he had given them his passport. But we couldn't stay there because I did not have my passport. We stay in a lot of hotels. Many in Beijing and other parts of China. We have never had this issue. She would not listen to reason, she was rude, dismissive and unreasonable. We were faced with either going home or fighting, so we fought. Eventually we just said I would go home and only one person was staying in the room. She was very annoyed to have to check us is at that point and said that the police might come and arrest us if I tied to stay in the room overnight. Ridiculous, humiliating and just so lacking in any concept of service. We had paid for the room and two breakfasts. Of course when we went to get breakfast the next morning, they tried to refuse to serve me because only one person had officially checked in. That was another argument in which they had to concede defeat when presented with the receipt that we had paid for 2 breakfasts. But the whole experience was so embarrassing and incongruent with the theme of the weekend: Luxury. It was supposed to be a magical birthday surprise and my boyfriend was so upset that those people were intent on ruining it. Horrible, uneducated, untrained staff. No one speaks a word of English in the whole, giant place and they are so deserted that they have no idea how to treat a guest. Other than that, it's a weird place, go visit for the shock value but avoid the hotel.
