I'm not into martial arts. I don't know anything about Kung Fu. But, I did enjoy this show. There were lots of demonstrations as the performers acted out a tale of a young boy who grows up at the Abby and masters Kung Fu even though he has a few distractions...
Well done.
The demonstrations were interesting: tumbling and gymnastics; breaking wooden dowels across backs, legs and heads; breaking concrete blocks; lying on beds of nails; being supported on the points of 3 spears. And so on.
Although, I believe the props were special: special wood, special concrete, special steel bars (they had them on display in the lobby), I still wouldn't want to be hit by one of these things. It was quite clear that the actors were managing pain during the performance.
Prices vary. We got the very cheapest seats and ended up 3 rows from the front. That was a bit too close, but better than some who ended up on the extreme sides. The theatre was full, but we still got our tickets the night of the performance just about 1hr before it started.
It's a bit of a walk from the Metro. Keep that in mind.
The show is not too long and there is no intermission.
Pictures are strictly forbidden. The guy beside me got spoken too even though he didn't take any pictures. I quietly hid my SLR. You can take pictures after the show. If you pay extra (or buy their souvenirs, you can go up on stage and get your photo taken with the hunky guys if that's your thing.
Beware the street vendors which congregate at the main entrance to the theatre.

I have never been a big martial arts fan. That being said this was a really interesting show. The men were incredibly strong and graceful and they are actual monks... which I thought interesting :) Their skills would put them in line with the best of Russia Ballet! Incredible leaps etc. My husband like the parts of the show that they broke things ( like huge wooden blocks on themselves...) or laid on razor sharp swords etc. (such a man) At any rate it was one of the better shows that we saw while touring and it was only about 1 hour long. We changed our tickets to the 5:30 show rather than the 7:30 show and loved that because it enabled us to do something fun that evening.

First, Kung-fu is not about fight, conflict or war, is about discipline, self-control, kindness. In this order of ideas, this show is amazing, a story of a boy who becomes a great budish-kungfu master. Great acting, great scenery, good music, astonish kungfu performance, wonderfull story, the 1h 10m most valuable in Beijing. Many people says: you was in China only If you visited the Great Wall... I consider to add this show to this quote next to the Great Wall. Go with no doubts. BTW, I recommend buy seats on the first floor, left or right sides, next to the hallway (180 RMB). Enjoy as I did!!!

Our tour guide suggested this attraction to my wife and I. Unfortunately she described it to us as a Kung Fu demonstration, which we were both keen to see. We said yes, she bought us tickets (380 Yuan each) and we went to see it later that night.
This attraction is NOT a Kung Fu demo, nor does it contain any convincing martial artists - it's performed by dancers. not fighters, It's a (rather poor) musical based around the story of a boy who learns Kung Fu from Buddhist monks. If you like West End/Broadway musicals (a la Andrew Lloyd Webber) this may appeal to you, although don't expect West End glamour or style.
To say we were disappointed is an understatement. It would have been laughable had we not paid so much for the tickets. We finally walked out after an hour or so in disgust. This performance has about as much to do with Kung Fu as an episode of Hong Kong Phooey (for those who remember the 70's)!
If you insist on attending, I'd suggest you negotiate on prices (like most things in Beijing) for your tickets. Before the show started we chatted with the people beside us - they paid 250 Yuan for the same seats as us (we paid 380 Yuan). Also don't be conned into buying for "better"/"VIP" seats. It's a pretty small theatre and all the seats have a reasonably good view.

We went to see this show. My rating: 6/10 stars
Beware:
Don't buy VIP - seats aren't great. You get a banana and a small water and a little pack of cookies.
Don't buy the second high priced tickets. Seats aren't better!!!
Buy the 3rd best tickets. You won't regret that choice.
No pictures during the performance... but actually you can because everyone does and nobody will stop you.
Free pictures AFTER the performance? Nope! That's a lie! IF you buy a souvenir, you get 1 free picture for 1 person. I was with my girlfriend. I bought a t-shirt. They said I could go get a free picture but she couldn't be up there with me and she needed to pay extra money!!!
From the beginning to the middle - it is interesting, deep, colorful, and full of great displays of physical ability.
From the middle to the end, it's slow, cheap, boring, and confusing.
It was an okay performance if you can get a discount and don't expect too much! But these other reviews that are saying how great it was... I found them to be very false.

When you sit down for the start of the show the first thing that comes up is that this show has been performed over 5000 times. Generally one would think that is a good thing but in this case it appears the performers have lost any excitement and enthusiasm they once had and the entire performance seems to progress without any real passion from the performers. A lot of what you see is the same across Kung fu shows but I would not recommend this one as it gets awfully boring the way it is conducted.
In the end of the show the performers line up on the stage and you have to pay to take a picture with them. When you do pay for that you can only take a picture with half the performers of your choice and not the whole caste even if there is no one after you in the line...

I've seen this show develop over the last 5 years. Each time it's just as amazing and powerful. The costumes have improved over time but the athletic performances of the participants are quite unbeliveable. It never fails to disappoint. I suggest you pay the extra to sit in the middle at the front. The performers come into the audience and from the front you can see the sweat explode from their heads when they hit themselves with iron and wood. It's a terriffic and amazing show. Buy the video to take home.

Something to do besides the usual tours of the Great Wall, Ming Tomb, Olympic Village and Forbiden City. This Kungfu show was recommended to us by the hotel concierge and it was great.
The ticket prices were 280, 480 and 880 Yuan (~ $40, $70 and $130). The 280 Yuan seats are located on the side sections of the main floor while the 480 Yuan seats are located in the center section on the main floor. I'm not sure where the 880 Yuan seats were located. The 480 seats were sold out the Sunday night (Sept 4, 2016) we went so we got the 280 seats. Turned out that they were great seats (row 5, towards the isle) side by side with the 480 seats separated by the isle. We were glad we did not pay 480 Yuan since we didn't see a difference from where we sat.
The show has a preshow from 7:15 pm to 7:30 pm then the actual show starts and goes for 2 hours without intermission. The pre-show involved the audience but the actual show did not. The performers do not speak, the story of the Legend of Kunfu is narrated in English as they performed. It is very easy to follow and understand and the pace is good too. The theatrics i.e. lighting, costume, music, the whole staging is spectacular. Understand that this is a theatre performance/show not "combat" kunfu. At the end of the show, you are invited to take pictures with the performers on the stage for 20 Yuan (about ~$3) per person with your own camera. So you have to ask someone to take your picture while you pose with the performers. There is abundant suvenirs of the show at the gift shop and other non show related suvenirs outside the gift shop in the theatre lobby area. The location is very assessible by public or private transportation. After the show we just walked out to the street and flagged a taxi to take us back to our hotel in the financial district (about a 30 minute ride for 40 Yuan).

Thoroughly enjoyed this show. It was about 80 minutes long and tells the story of a young boy on his journey to become a monk and learning Kung Fu. I was a little anxious that I might just spend the time watching Kung fu fights but it is well choreographed and only contained a few fight scenes. It is worth checking out if you have the time.

This show was amazing. Was as good as any New York musical. The sets, music, acting and of course Kung Fu was simply incredible. There is not one bad view in the theatre and it is only about $20USD to attend. Bring a jacket though, it is kept very cold because of the amount of exertion from the cast I presume.

We will have our 16 month old with us when we are in Beijing. I’m guessing this would be something younger children are not as welcome? Would the acrobatic show be better for us since we have her?

In was quite shocked at how many Chinese people talked during the show. Lots of age ranges, however, I agree with the other comment regarding the length of time perhaps, loud music too.

We were part of a private tour and when we went the guide just walked up to the ticket counter and bought them. When we went into the theater there were lots of unsold seats. After we asked the guide if this is normal and she said yes. If you can get a discount by going thru any of the websites that would be great.
