Easy access to the Great Wall and great to be able to experience. Travelled pre Covid in April 2020.

Chairman Mao once said: “He who has not been to the Great Wall is not a true man”.

Getting to that red watch tower hopefully made the Chairman proud on this day. Great view from the top too.

We visited the wall at the Juyongguan Pass area. Despite having seen parts of the wall on TV programmes where people were strolling along relatively flat sections – this was not it!

This is an incredibly steep stone staircase with steps of differing depths. There is a handrail virtually all the way to the top.

It wasn’t a sunny day when we visited, just warm, but virtually everybody was dripping with sweat. It was quite punishing.

Obviously you don’t have to go to all the way to the top (this particular section ends at a locked watchtower).

I waited at the gift shop whilst my husband continued on until he reached the locked gate.

Plenty to see in the gift shop – just about every kind of souvenir you can imagine. You can even buy an “I climbed the Wall” medal with your name on. The shop also sells drinks and ice creams.

Back down at the bottom we rewarded ourselves with an ice lolly (5 yuan, compared with 10 yuan at the Forbidden City).

All the toilets are “squat style” – remember to take your own toilet roll.

It was a three mile round trip, but as we know, not all miles are equal, and my calves were “tweaking” for several days afterwards, but I’d do it all again in a breath.

To see the Great Wall is truly amazing. The history behind the building is incredible. The walk on it is very strenuous though as steps are so uneven. My advice is to just take your time and you will be able to go quite a distance.

Was totally looking forward to the experience of seeing and walking on the Great Wall and was it awesome was a rather warm day so lots of people and I honestly didn’t think how hard it would be the steps are all different sizes and heights that made it fairly hard going up
We only made it to the third tower just shows how unfit I am but coming down was even harder as the steps are all the same colour and very hard to judge how far down to the next step is but found coming down sideways was a bit easier
It was a totally awesome experience for sure
Another thing off my bucket list

A tour was arranged by our hotel's concierge. Driver spoke good english and gave us the freedom where we wanted to go. This place was least populated so we decided to go here. Once you are walking here you can feel the effort that had been put to make this long wall. It is really beautiful

I think our (too short) visit to the Great Wall of China was the very highlight of our recent trip to China! I found the Great Wall fascinating and was sorry that our time there was too short and limited. The Great Wall is amazing and there has been a great and wonderful effort at renewing and reconstructing the Wall. I could have spent a week walking and exploring, but unfortunately only had a couple of hours in which to marvel at the construction and magnitude of the Great Wall. With our limited time, we could only see and explore a very small, short section of the Wall. That length of time may be enough for some travelers but I suspect that many, like myself, would like to have much more time to explore and walk a longer distance along the Great Wall. Don't miss a trip to the Great Wall!

This is a tough climb, but very worth it for the full 12 towers. It takes about an hour to climb to the top. Beautiful views all across the climb. The stairs on the wall are very varied in size and are very steep in some places. Lovely gift shop at the base as well.

Our group took a private tour here. I found this part of the Great Wall very different to Mutianyu and Simatai. Easy access to the wall from the car park and few stairs and you were on the wall. Was great to walk around the garrison and see the canons. The stairs are very steep to go up further but their are cold drinks at the souvenir shop and it was a beautiful way to watch the sunset.
