Newly re-furbished with marble and granite paving, fancy lamps and sunshaded seating, the Corniche is clean and well maintained. The touts for motor boats, felluccas, taxis and caleches can be very wearing....no matter how often one says "No thanks " "La shokran". they do not stop the hassle. It is very off putting . They do not seem to understand that if you want a service you will ask. It is every few yards.....If you do decide to sue thier services make sure you gat a price in Egyptian Currency and stick with it. It can get very "confusing" if this is not done at the outset.

My wife and I embarked on our Nile River cruise at the Corniche on the east bank of the river in Luxor. It is a picturesque area, but you will be bombarded by hawkers trying to sell carriage rides, souvenirs and trinkets. It is incessant. We were only able to avoid the harassment by being in a large tour group. Our tour guide described them as “vultures”. He told us not to make eye contact with them or acknowledge them in any way or they would follow you all the way to the bus or your boat trying to sell you something. It helps to be wearing sunglasses.

We enjoyed the antiquity when we were allowed to as we couldn’t take ten steps without being pestered aggressively to buy some junk, have our photo taken, take a carriage, take a tour, take a cab ride or just ‘give me some money’. And I’m not exaggerating at all. When we did take a cab or carriage the driver pestered us the entire trip trying to sell things his family made or take tours his family offered, even though we continually said no politely.

The promenade stretches from the Ibero Hotel to the conference hall. There are many museums, temples, hotels, restaurants and also the boat docks here.
As it is a very busy street, it is very loud and strolling along it is not exactly fun.
In addition, the vendors want to lure you into their location, so you will be approached again and again.
If you can't handle that, you should probably not go along this path.

You must see this at sunset. Its even better if you take a felucca ride on the Nile River. It should only cost about 100 Egyptian pounds for a small group depending on your negotiation skills. You may even get some authentic Egyptian food on your boat ride

The Sharia al-Corniche is the main street that runs along the Nile from Luxor to Karnak. The street is busy and is lined with shops, the Luxor Museum, Winter Palace Hotel, and lots of carriages for hire. A broad walkway with palms and flowering plants lies between the street and the boat docks and makes for a very pleasant afternoon or morning walk. Many shops have signs that advertise 'No Hassle' and these are easier for those who like to browse. Three companions and I visited a small bazaar in the vicinity of the Luxor Museum and spent a pleasant hour shopping and meeting the vendors. See the accompanying photos.
The Corniche offers a fantastic view of Luxor Temple. The monument is as beautiful from the outside as from the inside. And on the Nile side, the riverside is packed with boats, fellucas, and cruise ships. There is a floating Cocktail Bar and food vendors as well. Don't miss this experience.
There are those who will tell of hawkers and vendors who pester visitors who walk this area. This is easily handled with a smile, a "La Shokran" (no thankyou), and a phrase or two about what a beautiful country Egypt is. If you opt for a carriage ride, make sure you are firm on your price to and from your destination or you may find yourself with additional fees and tips. The people in Luxor are delightful and helpful. Don't let fear of being hassled get in the way of enjoying this beautiful part of town. Hold your head high and smile.

What can I say really? it's a great street for a stroll along the banks of The Nile, and it's very pretty.
The touts are pretty much in your face continually, and for a first time visitor this can prove too much, and spoil their enjoyment. As a frequent visitor I am less bothered by it, more see it as background noise.
You could enjoy the Riverside by crossing over to The West Bank of The Nile, using the local ferry, or a cheap motorboat, and walk a little more unfettered....
The Corniche way is traditional, and not likely to change, business is tough to get at the moment...just grin, bear it and enjoy your walk....

The Corniche is a touts lair! It should be an enjoyable place upon which to take a leisurely strole but this is impossible due to the constant hassle from caleche, felucca and taxi touts. Every 50 yards you're accosted by one or the other spoiling would could otherwise be a pleasurable experience. This is not the place for inexperienced travellers and the only way to "survive" is to be quite hard headed and dismissive of anyone who comes within 10 ft of you which ordinarily would be quite rude.

What should be the most attractive area in Luxor - the waterfront, is unkempt, scruffy and there is constant hassle from the aggressive felucca and caleche owners. Plus it has dozens of empty cruise ships moored up all churning out filthy black diesel smoke - and the part of the corniche in front of the museum is a building site.
I hope the new Governor of Luxor gets his act together and tidies up this area and restricts the aggressive harrassment of tourists.

It should be such a great walk along the river Nile with the magnificent temple of Luxor beside it. There should be so many tourists and locals enjoying the fantastic views. Instead it turns into a gauntlet with people trying to sell you stuff and carriage drivers being the worst. One driver followed us all the way on his carriage to a restaurant and then waited for us to emerge. When we finally relented we clearly agreed a price in Egyptian pounds for a ride in his ‘ferrari’ only for him to try to charge us in English pounds when we arrived. We just walked away. My 6 year old was afraid. Luxor should be thriving given the numbers of tourist that visit the valley of the kings & the temples but the desperation for tourist money is having the opposite effect with tourists choosing to spend elsewhere Or not at all. In fact we ended up spending in a fair trade shop run by a New Zealander instead. Prices were clearly tagged, goods were made locally for fair wages and there was no hassle. When you look closely at the malnourishment of the horses you can see the desperation for tourist cash. It’s just a shame that the tourist board or equivalent isn’t reading these reviews and doing something to improve the ‘shopping experience’ for tourists so that they feel more comfortable with parting with their cash which would do so much for improving the lives of locals. The souk was practically empty despite it being the cleanest one I’ve ever seen. It’s a vicious circle and such a shame.
