- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsI enjoyed my visit here!I visited this place after visiting the Temple of Philae. It is still a work-in progress situation as some exhibits are temporarily displayed. I like the circular way of arranging the exhibits, they are easy to follow and explanations are both in English and Arabic. Staff are friendly. There is a restroom on the left side, near the Entrance Door. Have a better understanding of Nubian Culture and their history after my visit.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 October 2023
- TripRabbitVirginia446 contributionsOutstanding — come here if you can before visiting the Nubian villageThis is a relatively new museum, opened in 1997; it is beautifully designed, taking you chronologically through thousands of years of this culture’s history, starting with prehistoric times. The museum displays many unique and invaluable treasures from the culture, and we found it to be a most useful introduction before heading across the Nile to the much more present-day Nubian village. Highly recommended.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2024
- Victoria LKansas City, Missouri329 contributionsA taste of Nubian cultureThis is how every museum should be laid out…you go in a curated path from Neolithic time to the present seeing how Nubian culture progressed. It was fascinating and not crowded so you could linger reading and seeing the exhibits up close. Upper and lower Egypt were different and this museum highlights sone of those differences.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 March 2024
- Susan CMelbourne, Australia1,539 contributionsModern museumVery modern museum with imposing granite walls dedicated to the history of the peoples of Nubia. There are some well preserved statues and a detailed history of the “A”, “B” and “C” peoples (3500 - 1550 BC) that explore the early history of Nubia before transitioning to the more Egyptian influenced periods. It included details of recent times with the displacement of the Nubian people when the High Dam created Lake Aswan. Uncluttered and clear layout with items described in Arabic and English. When we went there was an exhibition on the excavations at Qubbet el-Hawa which contained some very fine pieces.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 March 2024
- A BAmersfoort, The Netherlands123 contributionsWell worth your time!Even though our taxidriver said we only needed an hour, we spent almost 2 in this great museum. There was a temporary exhibition about the excavation of the tombs of Qubbet el-Haw, with some amazing mummies and objects. The permanent exhibit is laid out very well, in chronological order, and takes you through the different Nubian eras. I also enjoyed the bookshop! I cannot recommend this highly enough. Do take water though, the airconditioning is poor and it does get hot inside.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 May 2024

This museum was right next to our hotel, so we spent about 2 hours there after our Abu Simbal tour was over. It is easy to walk, and contains relics from 6000+ years ago right up to the modern day. When we went, December 2020, the garden area was closed because demand was low. It wasn't busy, and they had it set up so you have to go one way (to prevent COVID from spreading). I'd recommend it for a couple of hours.

The museum allows you to go through all ancient Egypt history covering the Nubian, Pharaonic, coptic, Islamic eras.
It is only a 5 minutes walk from Old Cataract hotel .
It is really worth a visit.

There were 170 Pharaohs of which 5 were the Nubian Pharaohs. This museum was fantastic and if you are in Aswan you should not miss it. The exhibits had multiple languages including English. It was beautifully designed and laid out with emphasis on Nubian Egyptian history and Pharaohs. The artifacts were incredible. We also really liked the gift shop and purchased a laminated time line of 6000 years of Egyptian history which helped put our entire trip in perspective.

I wasn't impressed at all visiting this museum and I should have listened to our agency!
We asked them if it's worth the visit or not they said no. But since we were a group of friends we decided to go and just walk around a part of having fun.
So many pieces are modern not even ancient! statues of Nubian people, horses and models of houses. It's a mix of so many unrelated things. Some ancient Egyptian stuff (these were the best) a few Nubian things and some coptic items.
It's a waste of time/money going there, you better enjoy doing something else

I’ve stayed in the Old Cataract quite a few times, but almost always ignored this museum, which is ‘just up the road’. The only time I had tried previously, it was closed. Having been let down by the non-appearance of a guide on this trip, I decided to use the sudden free time to have another go.
That was when I found out I had been making a big mistake and should have made the effort to visit long ago!!!
I was amazed at the amount and quality of the exhibits. OK, from the photography point of view, lighting is definitely subdued but exhibits were well laid out with info cards for each

This museum or ideas an excellent and fascinating history into this area of Egypt, both ancient and more recent, including the creation of the High Dam, the creation of Lake Nasser and the flooding of Nubia.
The mummy coverings are stunning as is the statue of Ramses.
There is plenty of text and explanations which means you can appreciate and understand what you’re seeing.

it’s a good regional museum where I felt I learnt a lot about the overall history of the Nubian people. There is a good range of artefacts on display that map the history as a whole but it’s a but lifeless when it comes to the culture.
If you want to learn about the history of the Nubian people then come here but if you want an insight in to their culture then I would visit Animalia on Elephantine Island.

We really enjoyed this museum as we had little knowledge of the Nubians, except that they were displaced in the building of the Aswan dam. Really worth exploring and some of the artifacts were stunning. It seemed appropriate to drop into the Old Cataract Hotel for a drink on our way back to our Movenpick Resort Hotel to sit on the terrace looking out over the Nubian settlements on Elephantine Island.

This modern museum is worth a 60-90 minute visit when you are in Aswan. We learned about the interaction between the Nubian Kingdoms and their Pharaonic neighbors. We knew about the biblical kingdom of Kush but this visit made it come alive

Hai sush1981,
I would like to know. How many hours it would take to see the museum and is photograohy allowed inside museum. If yes. then do we need to take a separate ticket to take pics inside the museum
Written 28 September 2018
To take pictures, yes, you need a separate ticket. The museum is small, but has some interesting items. The ruins are pretty neat, including a stairs down to a boat access on the river (not really a dock almost like a secret entrance). Hot there during the middle of the day, so you might consider going early in the day.
