A guy met me at the Entrance Area and unlocked the Museum Doors for me. On display are an ancient Marriage Contract, small carvings, tools, spears, etc. Outside are three huge statues on display. Behind the Museum: I was surprised to see the ruins of the ancient Aswam being restored. Took some pictures here and left.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 October 2023
- tsyeoh12 contributionsSmall island, quiet and peaceful, away from busy AswanStayed in Elephantine Island for 2 nights in Green Nubian House. This facility is more like a homestay with a room provided with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, balcony, and large living room. As for the island, it is away from the noise of Aswan city and is quiet and peaceful. There is a ferry boat which takes passengers to and fro from the island at EGP10 each way and is frequent. As for the island, it has many houses with narrow lanes, although it is a small island (1.2km long, 400m wide). Its walkway may not be as clean and can be a bit messy. You need Google maps to get around as there are many criss crossing lanes with no signages. There are nice views of sunrise and sunset on the island and you can just walk across the island easily. Overall, nice place for peace and quiet.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023

We stayed at Mostafa Jamaica House just above King Jamaica restaurant and had the best time. The food, the people, the lifestyle- perfect. Ask for Mostafa from Nubian dreams to take you out on his felucca for a day trip (or multi day trip), you won’t be disappointed. His boat hand Nasir is also an amazing cook- some of the best food we’ve eaten our whole time in Egypt. Incredible duo.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 November 2023

When the Aswan Dam was to be built an international effort to preserve temples that would soon be underwater came into play. A little rushed ( especially the museum guide who literally went 100 miles an hour and wouldn’t wait for us to read all the plaques! Then turned his nose up at the tip we gave him and asked if we could give him dollars instead!! This was rude and left a bad taste in my mouth. Tips are always optional and should never be expected. We are typical English and feel compelled to tip even for the minimum of service so this was quite offensive to us. I've sailed around it (2010) and I've walked around a large portion of it (2010), yet there is so much to see on this island. It was part of the trading center of Ebu since the Old Kingdom and has been of strategic importance until the times of the Romans. The hotel complex of Movenpick dominates one portion of the island. While the rest features two Nubian villages full of friendly people, Aswan Museum and the ruins of Ebu and Animalia the little museum dedicated to the area of Aswan. The traffic and noise of Aswan disappear on Elephantine even at night. During the day, the island is cool due to the river that surrounds it however, in winter the temperature can drop when the wind blows across the water. Two days on the island and I still didn't get to see the Aswan museum.

Visited the island to see the museum. We went by public ferry which leaves Aswan from the garden end of the waterfront (search in google maps). Ferry should be around 5 EP but no one was on duty the day we went. The museum is small and work is still being undertaken making some sections closed. An interesting and well laid out display which helps explain the history of the island and region.

Sailing on the Nile in Aswan is not like beauty or pleasure and happiness in any other city in Egypt

Sailing on the Nile in Aswan is not like beauty or pleasure and happiness in any other city in Egypt . I enjoyed a day on an amazing Nile cruise on a sailboat. We sailed to the island of plants which is beautiful and worth seeing as it has many rare trees and plants and overlooks the sandy desert and Elephantine Island. Then we sailed to the Nubian village it nice place and then sailed to the remains of the temple of Khnum, the Nile water gauge that was used to determine the flood gauge, Aswan City Museum and the many other wonderful temple remains on Elephantine Island.

The island is small, safe and can be explored on foot in a short time (unpaved roads).
It can be reached from Aswan by the cheap, reliable, frequent public ferry from the Siou Side pier (near the Kentucky Fried Chicken).
It is absolutely worth a morning to: stroll through the streets of the Nubian villages, observe the views of the Nile, visit the small museum and archaeological complex, visit the Nilometer. These last two attractions can be visited by paying (cash only) for access to the museum, after which you are guided on a short tour.
There are no POS. There are some restaurants and facilities where you can stay, perhaps arriving the evening before departure for a cruise on the Nile and dedicating a morning before boarding.

Take a 6 LE ferry over to the island from Aswan, then explore the Nubian village with Mudbrick houses and find your way (no signage!) to the ancient site on the south end of the island with ruins, a small museum and and ancient nileometer (that measured the height of the Nile. The ruins are unimpressive, though expansive, with no explanation. Locals will guide you around for a tip. The small museum includes some interesting items from the island.
If you have time, it's with an excursion.

Taking a boat trip out to the small Aswan museum and Nileometer, seemed a nice thing to do from our Movenpik hotel. The museum itself was small but had some mildly interesting small objects from Pharonic times and illustrated the lives of ordinary people quite well. The temple ruins are also supposed to be important but to be honest are nothing compared to Luxor, Karnak and others. It was more amusing to watch young Egyptians taking selfies and pictures of themselves than looking at the stones! We did explore the Nileometer – a chamber with steps leading down to show how high the Nile rose in ancient times. It was dry in April – maybe it gets water filling it up in the high water summer. I cannot really say this was a ‘must do’ excursion – but it filled an hour or so!

Very pleasant area. At the northern area was the Mövenpick Hotel both old & new. Also situated on the island is the Nubian Village which is accessible from the river boat crossing. Interesting area if you want to see the native culture of Aswan and the real people. Very friendly people who will welcome you with arms out stretched. Be aware that this is their homes and not to intrude unless asked. Also be prepared to tip for the privilege.

We stopped here to see the ruins. Most of the ruins consist of fragments that were assembled with new material as part of a reconstruction effort. A lot of the art consisted of fragments combined with drawings. There is also an indoor museum which didn’t have anything too interesting aside from an ancient marriage contract.
After going to the Philae Temple and the Nubian Museum, this sight was pretty dull. It might be worthwhile for hard-core archaeologists or Egyptologists, but we felt it was a waste of time.
Note that the nearby Aswan Museum appeared to be permanently closed.

How long is the ferry ride from Aswan to Elephantine Island? How long need to seethe island and the garden?

Do you know what time in the morning the ferries usually start and when do they run until? Thanks.

Is it safe to walk around at nightime?

I have lived in Aswan much of the past 2 years and this year on Elephantine Island. I live alone and travel all over without any fear. The people are very friendly and it does help to at least speak a little Arabic. I feel more safe here than in America!

We are staying at the Movenpick on Elephantine Island. Is it walkable from the hotel down to the Aswan Museum, Nilometer, etc?
Written 12 December 2017
So we have returned from the trip. From Movenpick, there is a back gate that leads to the villages. It's not a stellar path and I wish they had something more official. From there, you can wander through the Nubian villages. It is definitely very authentic with very narrow alleyways between buildings. There are two somewhat distinct villages with a bit of a gap between the two. After the second, you pop out near a fence with a gate that leads to the archaeological ruins, including the ticket counter and guide options. Views from the ruins are great and the Nilometer and temples are cool. It is definitely walkable, just be prepared for a rustic and local style walk through the villages.

What was the original name of the Moevenpic Hotel on Elephantine Island - when we stayed we were told it had been built to house Russian contract workers but can't remember the original name.
