If you are interested in Ancient Egyptian history, or Unesco World Heritage Sites then Ancient Thebes and its Necropolis is a must see. Although people usually think of The Great Pyramids when they think of Egypt, they will recognize Karnak and Thebes as one of the most photographed ancient temples. As one of the largest religious complexes ever built in human history it is without equal. Built over several hundreds of years under the direction of several of the most famous Pharoahs of ancient Egypt it is awe inspiring and unforgettable.
If you have the luxury of visiting the site on your own it would be ideal to go in the late morning or early afternoon to avoid the hoards of tourist groups that are rushed through in the morning. Alternatively, go first thing in the morning before they arrive. DO NOT MISS the Sound and Light Show at Karnak which runs for several hours in the evening/night in multiple languages. It is very informative and spectacular to see at night.
Colin Week's Theban Mapping Project is an enormous project determined to save the Valley of the Kings and general Thebes area from deterioration due to the mass numbers of tourists that visit the area, and also from climate conditions and changes.
A visit to Luxor is a must see for the traveller to Egypt - there are wonders and temples and tombs and museums and would take a month to take it all in.

I had seen numerous photos and T.V documentaries showing Karnak and the incredible temple complex,but nothing could prepare me for actually seeing it for myself.It is breathtaking.

Even though I visited in some of the hottest Summer weather, this did not deter me from having the experience of a lifetime; I have never seen anything like it. The historical and cultural enormity combined with the sheer aesthetic beauty are absolutely superb and I would reccommend anyone to visit.

Everthing we saw in Luxor was unbelievable. It is difficult to imagine how the ancient Egyptians were able to achieve all they did and how great it is to still be able to see some of it. We were in Luxor for two days. We went to the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Luxor Temple, Karnack Temple and Queen Hatshepsut's Temple. All spectacular. A camera and good walking shoes are a must. It is very hot in Luxor after 11 am. Our guide took us to all the attractions early in the morning so we could see everything before it got unbearably hot to be outside. We stayed in a 5 star hotel that was fantastic and yet the cost was equivalant to about $50 US/night.

Take the little "train" up to explore the Tomb of the young King Tut at the Valley of the Kings, but don't miss Valley of the Queens were you can see the rich vibrant colors of ancient Egypt in the tomb of Nefertit, wife of Ramses. "Newly" discovered/uncovered within the last few decades, the tomb had been hidden underground and the colors that were visible on the great pyramids and other temples can be seen here, peserved behind clear protectection.

luxor is simply breathtaking its like a wonderful trip in time u can stand in the temples and almost feel what it must of been like in those ancient times u really cant describe it u need to go there yourself the people are lovely yes its dusty and can be sometimes dirty but not enough to worry about i have been going 18 yrs and i still am in awe of this country the sheer size of the temples and the pyramids in cairo are simply huge yes it is a poor country but u can get almost everything u would need nice restuarants both egyptian and english ran all clean and food fresh so if you are thinking of going go on try it u will either love it or hate it its a bit like marmite

You can do so much from here..go to the Valley of the Kings, see the Colossi of Memnon, the Temple of Hatshepsut or just stay and visit Luxor and Karnak Temples with a sound and light show at night time. We also visited Dendera Temple which was fantastic. I felt very safe walking around here and there is less car tooting too.

This was my family’s favorite part of our two week Egypt adventure. Abu Simbel is spectacular and visiting the Nubian region is worthwhile all by itself. Don’t even think about it, put this area at the top of your Egypt itinerary.
