Probably the most irritating pharaonic site to visit

The obelisk in Mattariya, Cairo, is probably the oldest obelisk in Egypt and was for a long time the only witness of the ancient pharaonic city of Heliopolis. Some more remnants of ancient temples with hieroglyphic inscriptions had been excavated in the past few years, mainly when excavating foundations for new buildings. Some stunning huge granite blocks and a sarcophagus were digged out. Rumors have it that most house owners in the area dig below their foundations and find a never ending supply of artefacts for the black market. Now finally there is an open air museum to be visited, just opened less then 2 week ago. Nicely done. What is really disturbing beside the hassle of more or less small children pestering tourists is the incredible stench of the garbage pit surrounding the site from three sides. The garbage dump is still active, an unbelievable sight and even vultures circling above. An extremely sad and outrageous situation. Should you see the place? Well, if you are on the track of the Holy Family through Egypt, yes, the obelisk is near to the Tree of the Virgin Mary. Otherwise please admire the artifacts and colossal figures brought from the Heliopolis area to the Egyptian museum.

I don't know who gave it one star, but this is the oldest standing obelisk in the world, not just Egypt. So this is a must see for any tourist is interested in ancient history.
