Cairo International Airport Ramses II Obelisk
Jul. 2016 • Family
According to available information a plate at the foot of the obelisk says it was found in Tanis (a town in Ancient Egypt that is currently called San el-Hagar) and erected at this site in 1984 to become the first object greeting visitors on their arrival to Cairo. The red granite obelisk is 63 feet high and and weighs about 120 tons. King Ramses II ruled Egypt between 1301 and 1235 B.C. The obelisk was officially inaugurated April 25, 1984 the second anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from the Sinai desert. The obelisk can be easily seen from your bus or taxi as you arrive and leave the airport but is actually difficult to physically to get to and examine.
