Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Though stone masonry was initially developed by the Byzantines, the Fatimid rulers during the 11th century were quick to incorporate the technique into their military architectural designs. Initially they used brick, but stone proved to be more solid. After more than 900 years Bab al Futuh is still in good shape. The gate is supported by two enormous round towers, that perhaps also show off triumph and not just serve a military purpose.

Bab al Futuh is one of three remaining gates in the walls of the islamic part of the old city of Cairo. It stands in the north part of islamic Cairo, at the northern end of Muizz Street. The gate has a single gate for entry, flanked by two massive rounded towers that would’ve looked impregnable in medieval times. The gate is remarkably well preserved and still decorated with vegetal and geometric motifs.
Worth a quick look if in islamic Cairo, but I wouldn't go out of the way to see it.

This is one of the main gates through which to enter the Islamic Cairo historic area. It's not in the best condition and seemed quite dirty when I visited in Nov 2019. But this is a good place from which to start exploring the Islamic Cairo area.

Perfect place to feel the spirit of old Islamic Cairo!! Be aware that you would probably need to do some research or reading prior visit, unless you are taking tour with guide. Unfortunately this area is not fully developed into tourist attractions, so there is no much explanation like boards with information about the buildings and so on. Anyways I'm glad that visited this district.

Great start point to explore the fascinating north end of al-Muizz al-Deen Street. Bab al-Futah is an interesting gate to the Old City of Cairo, though if you only had time to see one gate, I prefer Bab Zuwayla, at the south end of the same street, where you can climb up the minarets for great views of the city.

What a way to start a tour, this majestic entrance has many things of note, notably the massive doors which were a stronghold point in ancient times. It's free to enter.

I saw the original pictures of Napoleon's scholars in Descriptions de l'Egypt and realized that it was easy to miss the significance amidst all of the people and business taking place. It's only one of three gates left from the Fatimid period. The arcade is beautifully ornamented with geometrical shapes, Upon entering the gate, al-Hakim's mosque is there on the left from the same period. Very worthwhile to spend time in this area of the city. Bab al Nasr is just down the way as well. While it is pretty gritty around this area of Cairo, it is worth visiting.
