Neighbourhood: Insadong
Nestled between Jongno and Samcheongdong, this small neighborhood offers a crash course in various aspects of Korean culture. Rows of shops display traditional Korean goods such as pottery and earthenware, crafts, fans, and more, making it a popular spot for souvenir shopping. The Ssamziegil shopping complex in particular has become a local institution for its unique spiral layout and the many boutique shops inside that sell handmade crafts and goods. This is the perfect neighborhood to sample a range of Korean dishes, with vegetarian Korean temple cuisine restaurants being a popular draw, but street food carts are just as famous. As a top tourist destination, crowds can swell, particularly on weekends, but you can find some rest and respite in one of the private art galleries or grab a cup of Korean tea in a tea house – many of which are located in beautifully renovated traditional Korean homes.

Great Shopping Experience
Nov. 2020
I had a great experience in Nagwon Instrument Arcade. I needed a MIDI keyboard and I was able to find what I needed. The staff in Kukje MIDI were very friendly and helpful.

Lots of instruments, but not many great deals
Sep. 2019
I visited this place very recently and I was disappointed for the most part. Yes, clarinet and saxophone reeds were cheap enough, but used instruments were not a very good value. Most of what I saw was more expensive used than what I have seen for new in the USA. The place was also quite dusty in places and I really did not find it very inviting to visitors. I've found better deals in Hong Kong.

Not worth it.
Jun. 2019 • Solo
Rather disappointing as there was not a great display of instruments (especially band/brass). I did not see one oboe or bassoon. Saxophones they have, as well as guitars and amps. At 10:00 not a. Customer to be seen.

You could wander for days in here
Dec. 2016
This place is huge, at least two full floors of all kind of musical instruments. Especially if you're a guitar lover, this is the place for you. The atmosphere is very relaxed and there are even seating areas scattered around for people to chat and sip coffee or check out their instruments. Whether you're looking for a new instrument or just accessories and parts, this is the place for you. And seriously, ANY instrument. You might have to haggle a little on price for the used instruments, but that's all part of the fun.

Fun to look at, but far to expensive for the quality provided
Oct. 2016 • Solo
If you are a musician and visit the area anyway, I recommend to have a look there. The atmosphere of "hundreds" of sellers of musical instruments and repair shops is quite special, and you find basically every common instrument there.

Instruments offered cover the whole range from poor quality to quite well-made middle class, most of them "Made in China". However, prices are in my opinion much to high relative to the quality offered.

For example, I was looking for an "average quality" carbon Cello bow, which costs (roughly) around 100-120 $ in Germany. Bows offered there were "cheap quality" ones from China (the same quality you can get directly form Chinese sellers on Ebay for 30-50 $), but they asked between 160$ and 240$ for them.

For guitars, the gap between "price" and "value" was smaller, nevertheless, don't expect a good deal there.

Beware of Guitarmin
Aug. 2016 • Solo
Sadly, I have to not recommend one seller in particular: Guitarmin, an acoustic instrument seller/luthier. I made a verbal agreement with Guitarmin to purchase a Zamar guitar for 250k won. We agreed he would fix the buzzing sound coming from some frets and let me know when the repair was complete so I could pick it up. Three days later, after messaging him to ask about his progress, he informed me that he had sold the guitar. I don't know if it is because I am a foreigner or if he is not in the habit of sticking to his word, but I was very disappointed by him. I would recommend you not support his business.

Musical Instrument Market
Mar. 2016 • Solo
I always think of this place as a market, and that ensures that you manage your expectations and buying behaviour. Just like any market there are those stalls that are high quality, professional and long established. And there are those where you know that you have to look closely at the goods and probably haggle a lot.
I have acquired various bits of gear here of varying quality and price. There is something for everyone and everything for someone.
I encourage one to wander and peruse the many shops, stalls and stores. Having so much variety and choice under one roof is a real boon, especially in rainy or cold days !

Good for people looking for some instruments
Feb. 2016 • Friends
I purchased a guitar here. Many stores with many instruments, so I had a lot of fun window shopping. But later on, my Korean friend told me that most stores sell the instruments expensively unless you go with someone who knows the worker there...
