About
Transport: Metro - line 3 to Anguk station. Exit 1 Facility Highlights: Exhibition Space, Museum Archive, Project Gallery Space, Media Theatre, Multipurpose Auditorium, etc. Description: The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea opens a new branch in 2013 at Gimusa, the former Defense Security Command site, built in early 20th century located near Gyeongbokgung at the heart of Seoul. Focusing on the Characteristic of the site that required an underground expansion, the construction plan adopted the madang(yard) concept, successfully integrating the exterior and interior of the building. The Seoul branch brings up a new discourse on the relationship between the public and the museum in an urban space, opening new possibilities for a future-oriented art museum of the twenty-first century. The site of Seoul branch once served as Jongchinbu(Office of Royal Family Affairs of the Joseon Dynasty), which was relocated to adjacent public library in 1981. the new plan includes restoring Jongchinbu to its original site, preserving the former Defense Security Command compound, and thereby establishing a meaningful cultural center that harmoniously embraces the historical Joseon Dynasty and modern Korean history.

- yongwuukDaejeon, South Korea1 contributionThe best exhibition spaceIf you happen to visit Seoul, I recommend the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art located in Samcheong-dong, which is situated right next to the traditional Korean palace, Gyeongbokgung. This museum, which offers a variety of exhibitions, most of which have either free or affordable admission fees, is in an excellent location for travelers. Furthermore, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, they offer free evening admission, which is an add bonus. The facilities are clean, and they provide a well-organized art interpretation service. There are also plenty of restaurants in the vicinity where you can savor traditional Korean cuisine, making this place highly recommended.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 September 2023
- Apple DLuzon, Philippines45 contributionsGood location, nice place to destressThis location is very ideal for those looking to do other touristy things within the same day. But unlike the nearby areas, it is not crowded. We love the way it’s laid out, it’s spaced apart, have a generous use of space. It was a good way to learn about South Korean artists and basically to de stress and be inspired! They have a small shop and that sells curios and art prints that will basically transform your space a cool and modern Korean inspired look.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- Journey4651303 contributionsKorean expression through Modern Art - Interesting, Touching and FunIt gives an interesting overview of modern art development in Korea. There were all types of media - sculpture, video, sound - with explanations in English as well as Korean. I especially liked walking through with my adult sons and sharing their interests and humor. It was perfect for a 1/2 day visit for us. There is enough to see for any art enthusiast.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 May 2024

It's clean, well-maintained and the staff are friendly. There's also a spacious cafe with decent food. This is worth a few hours of your time.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 June 2024

MUSEUM OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART
Lotsa video arts and style in the “back to future” exhibition.
Gotta admit I’m a superficial art lover so “contexts, perspectives, universal and specific” can be too intellectual for me. But I really liked the exhibit.
I’m not a gamer at all so “gaming society” exhibit held no interest and I didn’t buy a ticket. I found the museum and exhibit spaces kinda confusing.

Mostly electronics. They were setting up galleries for new exhibits. ( I enjoyed an attempt to teach children about being good museum guests)

Good for art people.
Too difficult to understand for us.
There are free lockers on first floor to keep a large bag and coat.

The building and the surrounding are interesting enough to give the museum a try even if the collection/ installations are of unequal interest.

Take subway to Anguk, setting is restful. Museum spreads to outside. Exhibitions, installations are huge, well displayed! I had lovely inexpensive meal at canteen. Then bought lots of gifts in Gallery. Outdoor have been there longer. Believe there is bus to visit another branch of this esteemed museum?

Only an audiovisual presentation was available when I visited at basement level.
I can not speak Korean but I watched it twice. It was a three concurrent large screen presentation.
Famous as a preeminent academic, Professor Joan Kee, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan points out the development of art and its respective time frame. Post war in Korea means post Korean War in 1953. With that in mind, this video looks at the transition from the Japanese occupation through the period of separation to the destruction of the Korean War. It perhaps shares some similarities with the search for identity in Eastern Europe when the wall came down. It describes isolation and separatism. It captures suffering, hardship of war, and the suffering of individuals, innocent civilians whose lives were torn apart by the separation. Just as you may be getting comfortable there is the sound of gunfire. It paints a picture of the shortcomings of war and its destructive elements.
Interesting films - and then you go to leave the auditorium and discover this is not fictional because all the clothes of one of the portrayees is on display. How vividly that brings the life of that person to a real witness. More poignant of the hardships she must have endured and suffered.
Excellent presentation. Full marks.
Whilst your at the museum check out the restaurant - stunning and inexpensive.
