We were in Sittwe for work and wanted to see Mrauk U while there. Getting there is not easy and it's expensive - we couldn't find any way other than a $100 taxi especially as we only had a weekend. We took the ferry back...More

My boyfriend and I went to Mrauk U because we wanted to see the old temples and the authentic and unvarnished site of the country. Since we heard that it is a bit difficult to get there, we considered signing up for an organised tour....More

You feel the history here. Smaller than Bagan but incomparable. Both are great in their own ways. Here, temples are still being uncovered. Yes, it's hard to get to, but it is worth it all - especially before it becomes touristy like Bagan. You can...More

We had to take two planes and a boat to get to Mrauk U so it was difficult and expensive to get there. I can't say I thought it was worth the money. It's beautiful but if you have been to Bagan and seen a...More

The recently restored temples from the Arrakan empire are Bagan style in diversity but still free from hordes of visitors. This allows for a more leisurely appreciation and heightened atmospherics for each site. It is quite a magical site, with thick-walled pagodas sitting like fat...More

Hsipaw (trekking) and train to Pyin Oo lin or Mrauk? My husband and I are coming to Burma in April for two week (yes I know it will be hot and I know about the water festival). We were going to do a trip like this: Yangon Yangon fly to Lashio Hsipaw trekking overnight for a couple of days Train from Hsipaw to Pyin Oo Lin, overnight Mandalay one day and night then onto Bagan 3 nights 2 days Bagan, then Fly to Heho and 3 nights at lake Inle However, my husband and I are now thinking we would like to see Mrauk because we like to go to place that are less touristy and off the beaten track. We have stayed in hilltribe villages in Laos and Vietnam that could be similar experience to Hsipaw and so thought of maybe switching Hsipaw and that area with Mrauk U but then we would have to miss the train ride to Pyin Oo Lin and we are not too bothered about missing Mandalay. So what do you think should we stick to our first itinerary and go to Hsipaw and Pyin Oo Lin or forget those areas and go to Mrauk U (and Yangon, Bagan and Inle lake)? Thanks

Mrauk u is going to be less touristic than Hsipaw. The chin village boat tour is a must see even if it is a bit of a hand holding. The mrauk u temples are not as good as the Bagan temples but there are no other western... More
