If you are a bird lover, don't go!
Sep. 2018 • Solo
I was looking forward to my visit and had heard so many good things about this tourist spot. The overall environment is lovely however the treatment of the parrots is inhumane. The cages are far too small, all had evidence of a weeks worth of dirt and some had very poor ventilation. The African Grey parrots require a lot of interaction and stimulation but had nothing in their cages to keep their busy minds occupied. Overall, an extremely inhumane way to treat these beautiful and intelligent creatures.

Beautiful art and place
Sep. 2018
A wide variety of art, variety of birds, and there's even a dance studio :-) Beautiful unique pieces and beautiful place to take your time visiting. The lady at the counter speaks English, French, and German.

Good, but too pricey
Feb. 2018 • Friends
The Symphonie des Arts is an art shop with thousands of plants, almost fifty birds - mainly parrots -, where you can have a drink. If you do plan to have a drink or spend some time observing the numerous birds, remember of bringing your mosquito repellent along!

Some of the souvenirs we saw are affordable, but all the rest, oil paintings, sculptures and the like, are out of price. I saw some good paintings and asked how much they were. I almost had to laugh when they replied $450, $700, etc. And you can't bargain!

You can discover african paintings and other arts here in a nice location. Prices are quite high but certainly worthwhile to give this place a visit.

Cold staff and exorbitant prices
Apr. 2017 • Solo
My greeting upon arriving here was getting yelled at for taking a picture of a wild finch outside with my phone camera (I like birding). The store clerk then stood outside watching me everywhere I walked, and followed me once inside the store. Inside, the items are the same as you can find on the awesome Art Market street in Gombe, but for 5 times the price, with no negotiating. The owner is some sort of European lady and is very cold. I asked if she spoke any English, to which I got a curt and haughty "No." OK...I asked about the origin of a piece...no idea. There's some sort of certificate hanging up that says the owner is some kind of Dame of the Belgian Congo or something. I asked if they take credit cards: "No." I asked if the piece was an antique, since the Kinshasa airport authorities will confiscate "antiques." The reply: "It is not an antique." I asked how I could prove that, should I buy it. The repeated phrase "It is not an antique." At the airport, I was told it was an antique and I had to pay a bribe to keep it. Go to the outdoor Art Market; avoid this place.

Beautiful art in a lovely garden setting

What the other reviewers have written is accurate. Things are expensive here, and the staff tend to follow you around. However, if you can get past that, you’ll find nicer and higher quality art pieces than you find in the Thieves Market for example. They also hold an annual Holiday Bazaar with a variety of vendors. It is a well attended event, as all the students from the ballet school perform (the ballet school is located within the Symphonie des Arts).

Not really worth it

It was nice to look at some of the things, but if you don't want treated like a criminal the entire time you're there, don't go. They follow you around and watch your every move like a hawk and everything is expensive.

Disappointed by owner's unhelpful attitude
Mar. 2016 • Solo
The place has a mix of touristy works and also quality paintings etc from well known artists. I had bought a painting by a famous Congolese artist ca. 5 years ago. A friend asked me to pick a painting for him. I wanted to send him some snaps for selection. Couldn't get (UK) roaming connection and I asked the lady owner for the password to their network - she claimed she didn't have it. I then asked whether she could then email a couple of images to my friend and I really wanted to buy and he was waiting. She rolled her eyes and made a face and said it was totally unrealistic to expect her to do so and she wouldn't be able to do it then - there was nobody else in the shop. BTW she also claimed the network connection was not working when I could see it on my phone. I left. Hopefully you will meet her on one of her better days.
