- WingecarribeeCanberra, Australia2,340 contributionsWander the markets, enjoy lunchNot to be missed. Wander through this colourful, vibrant fresh produce market. See the local fruit, vegetables and flowers. Buy some fresh fruit to take back to the hotel or for a day trip. And on the bay promenade side there are little food stalls cooking to order some hearty meals at a great standard low price. I enjoyed several lunches here. There is a limited selection but they were all tasty, and a treat to eat the local produce at the markets. Tried the beef brisket, beef steak, beef curry and fish curry. All the meals I had were served with rice, root vegetables and salad. Being a country of islands I expected the seafood to be always good but in Vanuatu the beef is special and I often found it to be more reliable (i.e. the fish I had at two places was rather hard/rubbery/bland but there are seafood restaurants where it would be better). These wonderful markets are also a place to meet and talk to locals.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 December 2023
- Cyla_at_midnightMelbourne, Australia28 contributionsThe heart of port villaA must visit when in port villa, the market is the heart of this town and you can see and try all the beautiful produce there is. I recommend the taro chips as a snack. You can also try local cuisine that the mamas are preparing at the waterfront side of the markets.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 September 2024

What a fabulous way to try local cuisine. Each time we have been to the markets we have eaten at a different stall for lunch, trying fish, chicken and meat dishes.
All meals are 500 Vatu and are served with rice, salad, a huge smile, and cassava.
Have a wander around the fresh food market. Coconuts opened by the seller after purchase for juice are between 100-150Vatu. Great value and delicious.
Food served until around 1330 hours.
Highly recommended.

We only stayed in Vanuatu for a week but visited the market several times. Whilst recent cyclones have limited the amount of fresh fruit available, there are still plenty of vegetables, and you can get herbs, wild raspberries, coconuts and bananas. The food was delicious, you can just ask the people cooking what dishes they have on offer and take your pick, a plate with a curry/stew, rice, cassava and salad is 500-600VT. Each stall has its own table where they offer some condiments to go with the meal - the tiny chillies (pickled or fresh) add a nice kick to the dish!

Definitely go along to support the locals and by some produce. They sell fresh coconuts, fresh veges and a great place to find a cheap lunch. Worth taking a look and located in the middle of town.

I have been to Vanuatu a few times and the Port Vila market is a place I always look forward to buying fresh fruit and veggies. It is a constant with great produce, the best flowers and also now a plant section with interesting items.
I am glad the market is now safer for the women vendors with better lighting, security systems in place and it is more hygienic and seems a nicer place to be. Markets are a way that women contribute so much to the local economy and to their families so supporting it is really important.
Cooked peanuts in the shell, fresh papaya, fresh cucumbers and of course bananas have to have.
And a meal at the market cafe is delicious. It is unpretentious but good quality delicious local kai.

We walked past it to have a look at the markets. And full respect for the locals, to try to buy food from them instead of the corporates and i'd recommend. They offer a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and if you go to the side where it's closer to the water, they offer prepped meals which was a big one, as everyone was standing in the line + they offer haircut services :D

Great way to see and try the local fresh produce. We had lunch at the local food stalls at the far end of the markets, 500vt for a huge feed. We had local caught poulet fish and a beef curry, both served with rice, vegis and salad.

Centrally located on the water’s edge, the Port Vila market is the buzzing centre of the downtown area. The fruit and vegetables are fresh and the vendors are friendly and helpful. Street food is available from the food stalls which offer seafood, chicken, beef and veggies. The value is good - prices are cheap.

These markets are amazing. Each stall sells fresh fruit, seafood or trinkets. Open 24 hours Monday to Saturday. The ladies and children sleep under the stall tables.
You can grab a freshly cooked meal at one of the stalls. We had fresh fish steaks which were delicious. 500vt a meal. The ladies were lovely and were happy to describe some of the more unusual foods available.
Flys were friendly but all part of the experience. Well worth a visit to support the locals.

Staying for a week in Iririki Island resort. Are the markets open on Friday? And what restaurant would you recommend in Port Vila as an alternative to our hotel restaurants? Something nice and reasonably priced. Thanks in advance.

Most cafes and restaurants are western prices. There is a wide range of options around the markets. Try and steer clear of markets the days Cruise Ships are in as prices inflate. Even in Duty Free.

Hi there, can you buy fresh seafood, crab, Lobster, prawns etc to take back to your room to cook/bbq ?? Thanks in advance !!

Once your in the main markets in Port Vila (run along the Main Street waterfront) there is heaps of fresh seafood and other produce for sale. You have the option to take it away or there are small vendors right there, that will cook it to your liking for a small price.

Hi - seems like a silly question, but can you buy Diet Coke here? Or anywhere? Thank you :)

Not at the market itself but just down the road is a supermarket you should be able to find some.

I will have a visit at Port Vila for a day from a cruise trip too. May I check how much does it cost you for an hour or half day taxi trip? Also, What else you would recommended to do at Port Vila ? Thank you very much.

I went all around the town in the bus and went to the turtle bay , you can swim with the turtles. It’s a very rough road!! It’s worth it I think however around $A30 it’s very humid so take water with you markets are good but not much there really better for souvenirs in the shops bookmarks $2.50 as with stubby holders and other “unique “ goods eg tea towel $15 if you can take a boat for a trip that worth it
Hope that helps

We are going to be on a cruise here in Oct. But we will arrive on Sunday. Does it mean we will miss out on the markets?
Written 13 September 2017
We were there for 11 weeks and never saw the market open on Sunday.

They do have a range of locally made clothes, trinkets and jewellery

Trip advisor doesn't let you put web addresses in replies, so just Google "port vila cruise ship schedule" and you will find the website that lists all planned cruise ship arrivals
