A stunning natural wonder, Matapa Chasm is one of the few places on the island that is good for swimming at any tide. The waters are protected from the worst of the ocean swells and are gentle enough for children wanting to snorkel. Excellent visibility in the water- you can almost get vertigo looking down as the chasm is so deep.
We came back here again and again as a lot of the other swimming spots were too rough when it wasn't low tide.

Have been here several times on this trip as it doesn't require to be wary of the tides. A pleasant hike in, under 5 minutes, and keep your eyes peeled as the chasm reveals lots of interesting things. The pool itself is fed with fresh water making the top metre much cooler than the lower salt water. If you're snorkelling and can dive down, you'll definitely notice the difference. When the tide is fuller you'll be able to see into the caves at the far left end of the chasm. Usually plenty of shade in one area or another and as is usual for Niue there are fresh water showers and flush toilets at this local

A short (5min) walk brings you to this chasm. The final concrete path is dangerous as fresh water flows over it making it very slippery, it is safest to head to the right and climb onto the platform that is about 80cm tall to approach the water.
Bring reef shoes, snorkelling gear, and sun screen. As there is a large rock at the end of the chasm you are protected from the tidal pull out to sea, which makes it a very safe place to snorkel at any tide level. An amazing abundance of fish, which are very tame. If you don't wish to go in the water you can still see many fish by sitting on the rocks.
Picnic table available for you to eat at. Toilets and showers at the beginning of the walk.

Besides being a very safe swimming & snorkelling spot this beautiful chasm had an almost spiritual feel about it. Only a short, easy walk from the parking/picnic area but a world away from any hustle & bustle, (as all of wonderful Niue is), this magical spot has plenty of tropical fish to view in a setting that is unique. Its location close to our accommodation at Namukulu cottages made it a favourite spot to frequent and we usually had the place to ourselves.

This is unique natural pool framed by spectacular vertical rocks. Crystal clear water full of tropical fish. If you like snorkeling this place is for you. We never seen something similar in other pacific islands. Tide is not really affected this place, so you can enjoy swimming any time.

I visited Matapa Chasm 5 times to swim and snorkel over the week we were in Niue. The best description I can give is to say that it's a swimmer's catherdral. Often I had it to myself to enjoy in solitary splendour and only a dozen ppl on the most 'crowded' day. Incredible variety of tropical fish to see, with safe snorkelling from the shallows of 30cm to 6-8 metres depth I would guestimate. A very special place indeed.

This natural chasm is a must see! Incredible spot for a swim, where freshwater meets salt water. The easy walk down to the chasm takes 5-10 minutes. As with everywhere in Niue, it's best to wear your reef shoes for swimming.

Make sure you go when the sun its going to be shining into the chasm to get the best out of the light. The fresh water and sea water mixing can cause some weird effects with vision, but just swim out past this or dive down and you will thoroughly enjoy.

Any way to get to the Matapa Chasm if we are on a cruise ship? Like maybe a car for hire, taxi, or whatever. We would love to spend a few hours here but am having trouble getting any response. Thank you!

If you go to Niue, you will need transport to get around. The best way is to rent a car.
