The Mary D tour to Amedee Island is justifiably one of the top attractions in New Caledonia. The island is public land but Mary D (a family business) has had a long-term agreement to bring tourists to the island so while Trip Advisor lists this as a review of the Island, it’s actually a review of the only tour option.
The only area of this tour that is lacking are the Mary D/Amedee Island websites. They don’t give a clear description of what the tours involve. So I’ll explain our experience.
At 7.35am a large bus collected us from our hotel (Le Meridien) and took us (via a few other hotels) to the port where we boarded the boat for an 8.15am departure. The Mary D Seven is a large boat that holds maybe 150 people. Our tour (July 3, 2022) was almost full.
The cruise to the island was calm and took only 45 minutes. They served coffee, pain au chocolate and croissants on board. This was not included in the tour price.
The island is quite small and there’s basically 7 things to do. We did them all:
1) Sit on the abundant deck chairs by the beach.
2) Visit the small store. We bought a hot chocolate after swimming but given how substantial lunch was, see below, it probably wasn’t necessary.
3) Climb the lighthouse. This was well worth doing. It’s 240 steps but I did it when it wasn’t busy and took maybe 3 minutes to get to the top. It’s not hard and the view is excellent.
5) Lunch. Amazing. The company puts on an extensive buffet lunch. There is plenty of food and drink and it’s all included in the tour price. It was excellent. There was a short dance performance during lunch that was very good.
6) Glass-bottomed boat tour. This is included in the tour and you’re divided into groups of about 30 and given a wrist band which determines which tour you’re on. Each tour goes for about 30 minutes. We saw coral, fish, a turtle and a small shark through the glass. The tour was very accessible, even to people in a wheelchair. The main commentary was in French but another guide translated the key points into English.
7) Swimming and snorkelling in the ocean. This was the absolute highlight. The reef starts at the beach and we swam with large turtles in water that was less than 2m deep and always within 200m of the shore. There were so many coloured tropical fish and it seemed trivial to find turtles. It’s free to borrow masks, snorkels and flippers. The staff make sure everything fits and tell you where to swim. The water is so calm and clear, you could see fish just wading in the water. Remarkably, I estimate only about 20% of the people on our tour went snorkelling. The others really missed out.
At 3.30pm we began boarding the boat, were back on our bus at 4.30pm and back at the hotel by 5pm.
The tour was extremely professional and the quality of the experience with respect to the ease of seeing the fish and turtles was better than tours I’ve done in Maui, Cairns or Fiji. Ningaloo Reef is probably the only place that has been better.
I thoroughly recommend this tour.
To Mary D: you’re doing a great job but I strongly suggest adding more detail about the tour to your website.

Rating should be a 6. What a sensational day run by a very professional family.
Starting with several staff/crew seeking us out to introduce themselves as English speaking and asking that we seek them out if we have questions. The island is spectacular and the snorkeling fantastic. Greeted by turtles swimming beside the jetty when we arrived. Lunch was way beyond our expectations - heaps of variety, heaps of food, from grilled tuna and paella, to pulled pork and various salads and much, much more.
The fantastic crewman on the glass bottom boat saved seats next to him so he could interpret the French commentary, which was so nice.
You run such a professional business, with staff that seem to take on a variety of roles, from serving food, working in the shop, playing guitar, dancing, and they all were so polite and enthusiastic. The family should be proud of what you have created, both professionally and as an experience. The systems you have developed put many large businesses to shame. Bravo!!!

Loved the island. Lunch was delicious, plenty of variety. The lighthouse was open, and most of our group ventured to the top. Gift shop had a good selection.
The snakes were gorgeous, they ignore you if you ignore them. YES there's a lot of them, but they are seriously chill. No signs of noticing you, and as they say - highly poisonous but never has a bite has occurred on the island.
Very pretty place.
If you don't want to snorkel, swim, or chat with friends/family, this is not the place for you. If you want non stop entertainment, pick something else. If you want a lovely scenic day out, this is the right choice.

Individual (small number of people) bookings are not recommended. Group reservations seem to have priority. If you make an individual reservation, please be prepared to be changed the schedule.
In our case, this tour was canceled 4 times in a row, and we were not able to participate because the tour company told us unilaterally that they would not conduct the tour.
The reason why the tours were canceled was that there was a reservation for a group tour after our reservation and the number of participants was not enough, etc.

We visited Amedee Island on 27th February and had a fantastic time on the Mary D daytrip. The boat ride out was comfortable with great views of Noumea as we were departing. It took about 45 mins to get to the island, which is quite small but beautiful. We hired snorkel and mask and went snorkelling in the lagoon and saw the local fish life, along with a turtle! Swimming in the ocean next a turtle was a once in a lifetime experience. It was amazing to be so close! The buffet lunch was excellent with a wide range of food choices available. We climbed the top of the lighthouse and enjoyed the stunning views. All the staff were very helpful and in particular Wallis on reception in Anse Vata went out of her way to answer all our questions! Highly recommended to all travellers to New Caledonia!

Really lovely day. The Mary D Seven was a large comfortable boat with air conditioning for the 45 min journey (yay). The lighthouse climb was a bit of hard work with an exceptional view at the top so very worth the climb. The lunch was a very tasty buffet with lots of options for vegetarians which was appreciated. The snorkelling was great although not as much coral reef as the other islands. Loads of turtles around for swimming with if you missed them at Escapade island. Really enjoyable day overall

Go for one day full of island adventure, and culture with a very nice seafood buffet .
You can dive on the spot , feed the fish, learn how to go up Coconut tree and how to cut a coconut fruit for drink or food.
Then for lunch you will test the seafood buffet with a nice and traditional dancing show on this amazing beach.
Everybody is eating together and this is real nice to meet people that day.
Finally you may depending if the day for for a shark feeding behind the reef!

Hello! Is this place suitable for young kids? I’m looking to visit late February and my daughter will be 11months whilst my son 4 years old. I’m just a little concern about the snakes!

Is there a maximum number of visitors allowed on the island on any given day? Would hate it to be wall-to-wall people after spending $400+AUD to spend the day there!

Hi, exactly as said, book through Mary tours. It'll be a full day tour, with lunch, local dance, and time to swim on lovely beaches, and climb the lighthouse if you're feeling fit.
Enjoy, it's a lovely day.
PS you're certain to see a number of sea snakes, which are pretty and very sluggish

There is also Amedee Diving that organises a full day with 2 dives, and a nice lunch and break on the island for about 2 hours.
Hope you have a great time!
