- Amy M1 contributionKokoda Spirit ReviewIn March this year, I was able to tick off doing the Kokoda Trek from my bucket list. I had the pleasure of completing this task with Kokoda Spirit. Wayne and his team were absolutely amazing. It started off as just a physical challenge for me, but by the end of it, it became so much more. The stories that were told along the way and the memorials that we conducted during our time opened my eyes to the sacrifice that Australia and PNG made to protect our way of life. We were the first trekkers of the season and had some difficult obstacles to overcome - poor track conditions (tree covering the track), a natural disaster washed away a bridge, illness etc but not once did Wayne and his team give up. We climbed over the trees. Wayne arranged a helicopter (via our travel insurance) to take us over the river so we didn't have to turn back and had the opportunity to keep going. Unfortunately I got sick over there but Wayne and his team supported me the whole way. I never felt alone. I always had some with me. My porter, Forde, was fantastic. He was a gentle guiding hand when I needed a little help and was also the big strong arm I needed when I just couldn't lift my leg to get over a tree stump. Without their support, I would have just sat down and waited for a helicopter to take me home. I can not recommended Kokoda Spirit highly enough. Great team and a wonderful leaderVisited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 March 2023

- Peter D1 contributionAdventure Kokoda a winning team and experience. The carriers and the history were wonderful. Don't take too much stuff like I did. Minimal clothing and gear is best. The Adventure Kokoda team was fantastic and they made the experience every bit enjoyable and informative from the start of booking to the return home. I cannot praise them highly enough all those from Adventure Kokoda were wonderful. Our Trek leader, Scot Babington was a wealth of knowledge and could not be more helpful as were the local carriers.Visited June 2023Written 1 July 2023
- Peter A2 contributionsKokoda 2 timesI recently completed the Owen Stanleys crossing for the second time with Adventure Kokoda. Both crossings were memorable; well organised and with experienced, knowledgeable trek leaders. Each trek leader has their own personal style but the knowledge and application is first rate. A few words of advice to people contemplating this trek- you can’t train too much, humidity is a big factor, travel light and review and review again your kit prior to departure. ( I took 2 lots of water purifier and in both cases forgot to include the essential chemical ingredient)! It’s a life affirming achievement concerning a very important part of Australian history, little understood and more important than Gallipoli.Visited July 2023Written 10 July 2023

- Ben M2 contributionsAn absolute cracker of a CompanyI could not possibly recommend Adventure Kokoda enough to trek with! They are extremely supportive and very easy to book with. Everyone I dealt with from the start of the process to the end was great. The relationship the company has with the local porters and villages is very impressive and I can see the support given to me and my group of six is being extended to the locals as well. I was recommended them before booking and certainly will push others to use them as well. My trek guide Pete was extremely passionate about the track and its history and any problem that arised he dealt with so easily and quickly always making us happy and have a great time. He just made the trip for us, what a bloody legend. I have done alot of travelling with several different guide company's and Adventure Kokoda would probably be the best across alot of areas if not all. If your thinking about treking Kokoda, just book it with these guys and you will not be dissappointed!Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 August 2023

The lunch got a little repetative but thats the nature of the kokoda trail. the terrain was for every changing an it was awesome. when you got to camp and the tents were all set up and ready it was a reilief knowing you could slam your pack down and chill in the river and get stuff ready for the following day. the friendships made are forever lasting and the experiences will stick with me forever.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 October 2023
- Shane S2 contributionsRelentlessly hard, but rewarding if you can dig deep enough to complete!I felt like a fish out of water. I can’t reinforce enough how hard this hike is, both physically me mentally. I couldn’t have completed it without the help of the group but specifically the incredibly positive and leadership of both Jake and Brody. I gassed out due to dehydration, lack of salt and sugar, and they worked with me to unlock the problem, enabling me to push on. The experience will build you up, drag you down, and force you to find a way to place one foot in front of the other. You’ll bond with your team, find learnings about yourself, marvel at the history and respect greatly the local PNG people. Awesome. Walked the track with No Roads Expeditions. Guides and porters were fabulous. Exhausting trip and fitness a must but the team look after you well and the food plentiful. Never thought I have Popcorn and pizza on a jungle track. Shane, our guide has an extensive knowledge of the wartime battles along the track. This plus the personal histories provided for our group to read enhanced the experience. Would love to go again.

Just got back from walking the Kokoda Track with a private group of 6 friends, guided by Aussie Company - No Roads Expeditions. I couldn't recommend them highly enough for their professionalism, information leading into the trek (training programs, packing hints, preparation ideas) as well as on track with our guide Gavin. We always felt safe and ready to conquer whatever the day ahead threw at us. The local porters and staff were amazing and so helpful. Definitely look into using No Roads if you are thinking of doing Kokoda.

The success of the defence on the Kokoda Track by Australian military forces only occurred due to the assistance of the local villages. Without this help history would have been different. Therefore as a trekker wishing to truly experience the Kokoda Track you need to embrace the local villagers.
Unfortunately the money given to the PNG government by international trekking companies is not getting back to the local villages. Locals are quite rightly disgruntled with this situation and blockades are appearing. We passed through these blockades without hinderance as the whole guide team was lead by locals, not foreigners so the villagers knew that the money was going back into local communities and not overseas.
If you wish to do the Kokoda Track think about;
- how important the locals were in creating the legend that is the Kokoda Track and pay respect to them not just the Australian military forces
- using local guides rather than overseas based organisations
It may take more effort to do this, however you will gain a better overall experience from it and will have less issues.

It’s been a week since I completed the unique and extraordinary Kokoda Track & Buna Battlefield Tour and if Travis Hocart reached out and asked me if I would go back tomorrow, I would say yes within seconds!
Travis Hocart, Kokoda Crossing Owner/Operator/Trek Leader has an amazing understanding and passion for the history of the Kokoda Campaign and Australia’s military history in general. That combined with his love for the track and his dedicated, professional, caring, supportive and experienced team known as “the porters” made this trip outstanding.
The team of porters were right beside us, making us feel safe and comfortable, whether by lending a hand through the tricky parts of the track, singing beautifully, pitching our tents, or collecting our drinking water. They were incredibly kind and gentle souls who went above and beyond their job description to ensure that we were well looked after.
It was also extremely comforting to have the support of an experienced, competent Paramedic trek with us who also provided support above and beyond his role.
The food was delicious, nutritious, and plentiful. The cooks put so much thought into the meals and there was always enough for seconds. The afternoon popcorn and evening damper with jam was always a welcome treat.
The Kokoda Track is incredibly beautiful. Every single stream that’s crossed, hill that’s climbed, waterfall that you walk up or village that you pass through is stunning. It will be forever be in my heart 💚
Thank you Kokoda Crossing and your wonderful team, for a TEN outta TEN experience. An incredible, life-changing journey 💚🥾🌱🌿

From our first enquiry to the final goodbye, this trip with Kokoda Crossing could not be faulted. Director Travis’s knowledge of the track, the history and the stories of our soldiers who fought in PNG was remarkable and really painted a very vivid picture of what happened there 80 years ago, and the significance of the places we visited.
There was no shortage of good nourishing food for us and our porters, who were with us literally every step of the way, and happy to entertain us as well.
The addition of the Buna Beach stay and meeting the community along the Northern Beaches was a huge plus and cherished memories were created here, before we even reached the track!
Everything was so well thought out to the finer details, from nutrition to hygiene and comfort after a hard days walking on the track!
A truly special experience, thankyou Kokoda Crossing!!

Wanting to do the track with son (21) for a father son bonding experience. We both love war history. Is their any particular tour anyone could recommend that would be good for us. I do have an injury (titanium rod in leg). I don't work out but have property so am physical most days. Thinking of doing this with other men from family maybe also.

Adventure Kokoda specialises in the war history of the Kokoda campaign. Most of our trek leaders are former professional soldiers. We are the only trekking company that follows the original wartime Kokoda Trail. If you Google 'Adventure Kokoda' or 'Kokoda Treks you will be able to view our website.

I’d like to know what the overall cost for the trip would be, including flights from Brisbane?
Contact Shane at Escape Trekking Adventures, he can advise you on best prices for flights, give advice on tours and whatever else you need. Brilliant operator on Kokoda, honest and genuine. Highly recommend. Good luck on your trek.

Hi there - I currently do personal training 4 times a week and walk over 15,000 steps a day (I consider myself active) but not fit in terms of running long distances. The trek is something I'd love to do in April - is there any additional fitness requirements I should consider - 30 years old and no injuries. Thanks in advance

You would seem to be physically OK however we would recommend you get a full medical check-up then increase your training level by 10% per week through 'till April. If you Google Adventure Kokoda (kokoda treks) and click on 'Contact Us' Tracie will send you more detailed information.
Looking for people who did not use a porter on Kokoda to offer 1) Training advice (besides the obvious train with your pack & weight equivalent you will be carrying) & 2) Overall honesty as to difficuly level carrying your own pack, harder or easier than expected, any challenges faced?.
Please no one reply with "definitely use a porter" as I am wanting only experiences of those whom did not use one, so I can make an informed decision. THANKS

Hi, I am looking to do the Kokoda Trek later this year (a group of 2-3 people), and was wondering if anyone had recommendations on which companies to look at?
Budget is standard, we are pretty fit & looking for a bit of history/ education.
I am a little overwhelmed by the amount of companies on Kokoda Track Authorities site!! There are a few forums on this but they all seem quite old.
Thanks :)

'Adventure Kokoda' has been leading people safely across the Kokoda Trail for the past 26 years - the company specialises on the Kokoda Trail and does not trek to any other destination. The company has been rated No 1 on Trip Advisor for the past three years.
Adventure Kokoda has established a Not-For-Profit company called Network Kokoda (which you can Google) to provide support to local villages in health, education and agriculture. Among the major projects funded by Network Kokoda are an education centre at Sogeri; a fish farm at Iaowari High School and a TB Isolation Ward at Popondetta Hospital. As a result Adventure Kokoda enjoys popular support from local village communities along the way.
Adventure Kokoda is the only trekking company to provide for the welfare of the guides and carriers they engage by providing them with individual sleeping bags and mats together with a full trekking uniform and a full menu of nutritional meals.
Do not rely on any information on the Kokoda Track Authority website - the organisation is beyond dysfunctional and currently under review.
If you Google Kokoda Treks - Adventure Kokoda you can send an email via the 'Contact Us' tab and Tracie will send you an information package.

Hi, I did 8 days on the Kokoda track as a solo female trekker with a PNG guide in Jul 2016. My guide was Arthur Danny who is now the owner/operator/guide of his own new local PNG company KOKODA SIKMAC EXPEDITIONS. I highly recommend Arthur. Not only that, he was recommended to me on the spot at the KTA office. They wouldn't even let me go with the other local operator I had already corresponded with by email, as they only trusted Arthur to take me over the track. He was my guide, he cooked for me and he was an awesome source of encouragement from beginning to end. He is way cheaper by $1000-$2000 than his Oz counterparts. I got homemade Pizza, Tuna Pasta, Roast Chicken/Potatoes n Spinach, Milo, biscuits and the works out there. He has worked for other Oz companies for over 10 years. He has walked the track over 70 times and has even completed it in under 24 hours, the whole 96kms of it. In short, Arthur is the man. PM him on Artz Dan on messenger for more details. However, any questions I will do my best to answer. A few of my friends are going to be going on the trek now too with Arthur so I know his current prices. 🙂
