Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We weren’t allowed in to have a look inside the mosque, although we weren’t given a specific reason why not.
From the outside the building is very impressive and it is amazing architecture.
It is amazing how this place is situated right next to the synagogue.
I am sure inside it is just as impressive although I cannot comment.

The big mosque in Paramaribo is the headquarters of the Surinam Islamic Society. The current mosque was built in 1984, the first one at this location in 1929. It looks in itself attractive (especially at night) but fits less well in the city architecture than the Synagogue - which is right next door! A symbol of the fairly successful Surinam multicultural society.

One of the staff kindly took us around this mosque for a small donation. He told us the history of the building and showed a photo and sculpture from the wooden mosque which was previously on the same spot. Quite plain inside compared to some mosques. The main factor of note is that it stands right beside the main Synagogue of Paramaribo and they get along really well.

The mosque is beautiful from the outside. The inside is basic. What makes it special is that it is located next to the synagogue. You are able to visit the mosque every day. The administrator is located behind the mosque and will show you around and tell you as many stories as you'd like to hear.

The formal muslim community in Paramaribo dates back only to the 1920s. The current structure was completed in 1984. It replaced a simpler wooden structure completed in 1932. Supposedly, Mohammed Ali visited the mosque in late 1970s. Our group was informed that the mosque shares a common parking lot with the adjacent Jewish Synagogue. A hopeful sign of tolerance!

On the commercial Keizerstraat, one of the main streets of Paramaribo, branching inland from the riverfront, can be found a Police Headquarter, a McDonald's, a Synagogue and adjacent to it a Mosque.

The mosque is an attractive building with four slender minarets. It serves the Muslim community of Suriname, but is apparently also the headquarter of the about 100 years old 'Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam'. By referring to the city of Lahore in today's Pakistan one can deduct that most Muslims in Suriname have roots in the Indian subcontinent.

Chronologically the mosque has been built later than the nearby synagogue, although both are not the original building, just replacing older structures at the same site.

This was a treat to see - along with the Cathedral and the Synagogue. To have 3 major world religions within walking distance of each other is a testament to the good in the world.

The mosque was one of several religious buildings we visited during our day in Paramaribo. Five stars awarded for the nation's wonderful tolerance of different religions, exemplified by the mosque's positioning right next to Suriname's only synagogue and only a couple of minutes' walk from Christian churches. Three kilometres away, a pink Hindu temple dominates the skyline.
A fascinating city, melting pot of religions and cultures. We were told the mosque was actually paid for by the great Muhammed Ali though haven't as yet been able to confirm whether it was the boxer or someone who shared the name.
The other irresistible reason for coming to Paramaribo is the brilliantly preserved Dutch
Neighbourhood in the old town. In Latin America, it's bizarre to hear locals conversing in Dutch, mixing it with creole. Suriname's a wonderful oddity, not to be missed.

This is a beautiful mosque. The people managing it are very friendly and accomodating. They let us go into the mosque and walk around the grounds. I really enjoyed it. Very peaceful.
