Better go solo all the way
Oct. 2019 • Solo
Most of the people who ride the Death road go there on an organized tour. I went solo cycling from La Paz. The descent starts at 4200 much higher than the entance. I chose to go down the dirt road instead of the asphalt and not only saw great views but as an added bonus it passes through a village with restaurans offering fresh delicious trout. It was raining during my descent on the actual Death road and the mist made the experience all the more thrilling. At the very end of the road there is a camping where you can sleep outside but under a roof and take a shower, then visit on the next day the animal refuge further down and take a minibus to La Paz if you want to continue cyclheing on the high plane.

Good fun but not as technical as you might think
Mar. 2020
Having done a down hill off Volcan Toco near San Pedro de Atacama which was steep fast and quite hairy, this was a bit more pedestrian, but then the consequences are a little bit more dire if you get it wrong. Just pick a good Bike company that puts safety and professionalism first - so you may pay a bit more - so you can enjoy the day. I went with Gravity in La Paz and they were great. Good fun but still safe with good bikes. And there were a few kids riding down the road but if you ask me - ballsie parents!

Amazing

A breathtaking place. In spite of the terrible statistics, this is one of the most beautiful natural places in Bolivia with green jungle and fantastically beautiful foggy waterfalls

Once it was "the world most dangerous road"!? (WMDR) - maybe in South America!?
Jun. 2019
This old road was built in the 1930s and was the only road connection with the lower "Los Yungas" - the jungle area/ rainforests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Bolivia and further on to the Amazonas. This dangerous northern part of the road is between La Paz and the mountain city Coroico, about 60 km northeast of the capital.
The road winds along steep mountain walls and cliffs and it was considered very dangerous because of its steep slopes, narrow single track, lack of guardrails, rain, and fog. The road isn't paved and a lot of wet clay and gravel on the road makes it dangerously slippery. Many fatal car accidents, partly large by buses, led to the nickname - the "Road of Death" Today, the stretch is a very popular tourist attraction for youth; from La Paz "downhill mountain biking" to Coroico - and casualties with deaths continue. The new paved"National Road nr 3" is following the old road parallel.
My wife and me was driving this old road down and up again by taxi. It was a taxi with almost brand new tires and an adult driver who knew this road very well. The lady on my side refused to sit on the left on the downhill ride :)
- this was in June, some years ago.

Must do!
Jan. 2020
We biked it with Xtreme downhill and everything about it was amazing from the equipment provided to the guides to the ride itself. Its a gorgeous area and a must do for anyone visiting la paz who is comfortable on a bike (do NOT do this if you aren't. its full rocks and gravel with some steep areas and it really is next to an exposed edge at parts. actual downhill mountain biking, not just a tour day trip.)

Spectacular Scenery
Dec. 2019 • Couples
We mountain biked Death Road with Xtreme Downhill. The group was small - 9 tourists and 3 staff members (2 guides and a driver).
There is an unsettling number of crosses marking some of the many spots where motorists and cyclists plummeted to their death.
The road was rocky and downhill/flat and went through some of Bolivia’s most spectacular scenery, dropping 3,000m in altitude.
Xtreme Downhill provided a bike (choice of front suspension or front and rear suspension), full-face helmet, jacket, pants and gloves. All equipment was in good working order.
When cars overtook they stirred up dust which got in my eyes even with sunglasses on. I’m not sure if there are any companies that provide goggles.
Food was okay (breakfast was basic, lunch was a buffet), guides were fun and gave lots of tips. I was last in the pack and felt safe and not rushed.
Low-quality photos/video were emailed 2 days later than stated by the guides.

Riding death Road is one of the best experiences ever ! It is absolutely amazing. It is mainly downhill and the whole thing is about 40km and takes about 4 hours. There is really nice spots for photos as well.
