Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It is a modern art and contemporary art museum.
The white walls, the arches and small versions of rose windows surprise you because of the building stands out in middle of the dark lanes.
Make sure you visit the place during its opening hours.

In 1912, the wealthy & prominent Lebanese aristocrat Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock built the private villa that now houses the museum. He decreed in his will that the villa be transformed into a museum. When he died in 1952, he bequeathed the villa to the city of Beirut. The museum opened in 1961, directed by Amine Beyhum, with an exhibit of works of contemporary Lebanese artists, setting a precedent for cultural events in Beirut.
The Sursock Museum building exemplifies Lebanese architecture, with its Italianate (specifically Venetian) and Ottoman architectural influences. It is one of the few remaining villas from its epoch in Beirut. It is located in the historic Rue Sursock in the Rmeil district of Beirut. The street is home to other mansions that were built in the 19th century by Beirut's most prominent families, such as the Sursocks and the Bustroses, even though this architectural heritage is threatened by developers and an almost-unregulated real estate market.
On August 4, 2020, the museum sustained significant damage and some of its artworks were destroyed as a result of an ammonium nitrate explosion.
The museum was restored thanks to the financial commitment of the Italian government, which allocated one million euro in May 2021. #beirut #lebanon #summer #vacation

Beautiful collection in a beautiful building. Because the collection of contemporary art has been built up over the last 60 years, it provides a beautiful picture of Lebanese art. But also a number of works from elsewhere, including a beautiful work by Kees van Dongen. The latter and a few others have recently been restored because there was significant damage in 2020 due to the port explosion.
The museum has a turbulent history with four closures due to war, etc. A nice story about the turbulent times of Lebanon.
Highly recommended, with only a voluntary contribution as entrance fee. Small but beautiful shop and lunchroom complete it.

This modern and contemporary art museum aims to produce knowledge on art practices in the region and support local art production. The highlights of our visit include the Salon Arabe for its marvelous decoration and the Engaged Art zone where are featured a series of works from Lebanese artists who use their talent to protest against political and social injustices. Find more pictures on my Instagram (kelledstyle) and more info on my blog ;-)

This is a beautiful building but it really comes alive at night when the stain-glass windows and building is lit. I think we visited this place more for the building than anything else. I would agree with a previous reviewer that 30-60 min is enough to tour the exhibits inside. They have a nice cafe/restaurant in its courtyard but if you want a table you need to book a table in advance as this is often very busy.
My Advice: If you're into art then make a visit, if you not then stroll passed it in the evening when your the area, it really is a beautiful building.

Part of our trilogy when visiting the musea in Beirut.
This museum houses some very beautiful contemporary art as well as modern art and art from Lebanese artists. At the time of our visit there was exhibition of Pablo Picasso. Incredible how a museum is located in downtown Beirut.

I love visiting contemporary art exhibitions, so a friend took me to Nicolas Sursock Museum. It's nice to see an old mansion turned into a museum, with focus on contemporary artists. Worth the visit for the house, the collection and entrance is free.

When we visited all the Lebanese history places, the visit of this museum of contemporary art is a surprise. The collections are well highlighted and the diversity takes us to another Lebanon always in adequacy with its history and its present time.
The basement dedicated to Baalbek is rich and gives a thorough study of the history of the Bekaa.
To do with big and small.

The museum itself is very interesting. The most beautiful of everything - in my opinion - is the building itself. The collections are very interesting and staff working there very helpful and passionate about their art knowledge.

Hello I'm thinking of doing my wedding photoshoot there, I was wondering if there's a price we have to pay ?

Your best bet is to ask you hem direct. I believe it is free, according to memory from a relative who did that a few years back. Give them a call.

I heard that there is a restaurant in the museum that serves good breakfast. What's the price range of their menu? Thanks!

We did not eat at the museum. However, if you're looking for a great breakfast, I'd suggest Le Cafe Sursock which is about a half block away. The traditional breakfast is enough to share for two and was reasonably priced at 15 thousand I believe.

Bonjour,
le musée Sursock est-il gratuit ou payant?
Et quand rouvre-t-il ?
Merci
