I had the great fortune of visiting the museum once with the director of the museum as a guide and then, more at leisure, by myself. I always find museums to be unbalanced: either they put in too much and you get exhausted by the weight of the exhibits or they are too poor or irrelevant. The National Museum is... More

Our guide kept downgrading the pieces, saying it wasn't the Louvre or the British Museum, but this site hold its own in its scope and presentation. Be sure to see the documentary to learn how very large objects were cased in cement to protect the from the ravages of the civil war. Heady stuff. A must-see in Beirut.

It's not a huge museum. You can have a good look over it all in less than an hour. Very old things! Recommended!

Give this is the only museum we have, it's pretty cool to visit it. Especially now that they opened the basement for visitors, it gives an interesting look back onto the Phoenician civilization. A must visit place when in Beirut.

This museum is EXCEPTIONAL. Displays are well done and the museum is spacious and uncluttered. I was amazed at some of the objects on display...gold coins, gold jewelry, incredible pottery and the Egyptian collection is impressive, but small. The building itself is beautiful. Parking at this location is very tight, so consider walking or a cab if possible. Definitely a... More

The museum and its collection are quite nice. However, the museum seems rather small for a country and city with such a long, illustrious history. Judging by the state of the ancient ruins around the city, one gets the impression that Lebanon doesn't really take good care of its cultural heritage, which is a shame. Of course, there was a... Classical history museum. In a way is a pretty alive place as it shows the signals also of the civil war on the building and the exhibitions. Is nice to follow all the stages on the old history as the museography is very sober, never overwhelming. Definetely is a must for everybody.

They have now opened a new basement floor with an exquisite collection on some funeral related customs of the regions- the sarcophagos and mummies etc. It is as unique and great as the rest of the collection. Plus, there is a free audio guide in many langages and the facility itself is really well taken care of! Highly recommended, esp... More
