Oldest Mosque in Bahrain
4.0 of 5 bubblesDec 2019
From an information plaque in the 'visitor center'. The Al-Khamis mosque is the oldest extant mosque in Bahrain, and as such has a very special identity on the islands. The buildings we see today dates largely from the 12th to 13th centuries CE, tradition claims the original mosque was built in the early 8th century CE. The area in which the mosque stands is Bilad al-Qadim, which translates as "The Old Town" or "The Old Country", and history and archaeology show that people have been living here since at least the 8th Century CE. This is a nice site that has three main sections, first the entrance with is hosts a small visitor centre where you can see aerial photos of the old town, gravestones, artefacts, old coins, gems, pearls etc. Next is a large open space where you can see remains of the old structures, a shrine (which has sadly collapsed) and then the Mosque itself. The pavement has a very gently slope so getting around is easy and the site can be completed by wheelchair or buggy (not including inside the mosque). The entire site is really well maintained and spotlessly clean. There are two minarets that you can enter and climb to see out of the windows but these are very narrow and small so adults may struggle getting in. Overall its a very enjoyable site and well worth a visit if you have never been before. Entrance is free as is parking, there are toilets on site and you don't need to either wear a head covering for women and shorts are OK for men. Please be aware that there is a 3meter deep well close to the footpath that is not fenced off, something to bear in mind if you have young children that like to run ahead. Great for photography.

Al Khamis Mosque

Al Khamis Mosque is believed to be the oldest mosques in Bahrain; Built during the era of the Umayyad Caliph Umar Bin Abdulaziz.

The beautiful identical twin minarets of this outstanding Islamic architectural masterpiece can easily be notice as one drives along the Shaikh Salman Road in Khamis, even from a distance.

The mosque has been reconstructed several times throughout history:
- The original site and foundations are believed to date back to the late 7th century.
- The 1st minaret was constructed sometime during the 11th century.
- The 2nd minaret was added sometime during the 13th century.
- An early prayer hall with a flat roof supported by wooden columns dated to the 14th century.
- A section of the flat roof was added, supported on arches resting on thick masonry piers which have been dated to 15th century.

Attached to the mosque were a Quranic School (Madrasa) and a hostel. Student from all neighboring countries use to settle and learn Islamic knowledge.

The name 'Al Khamis' means Thursday, which may have been the market day in this area. The mosque believed to be placed close to this busy market and named after it.

The mosque was used for worship up to the 1960's and has since been partially restored. Out of respect it is advised to dress modestly when visiting.

Al Khamis mosque is an example of the simple yet beautiful Islamic construction used of that era. It is a living proof of Bahrain's rich history and architecture.

The Khamis Mosque or Masjid AlKhamis (in Arabic) is believed to be the first mosque in Bahrain and one of the oldest in the region, as its foundation is believed to have been laid as early as 692 AD.
The identical twin minarets of this ancient Islamic monument make it easily noticeable as one drives along the Shaikh Salman Road in Khamis.

An inscription found on the site, however, suggests a foundation date of sometime during the 11th century. It has since been rebuilt twice in both the 14th and 15th centuries, when the minarets were constructed. The Khamis mosque has been partially restored recently.
Not to be missed if you're a tourist.

... but the security guard, hoping for a tip, let us in. It took us 5 minutes to cover the site and then we left. It is Bahrain's oldest Mosque but the local area is a mess due to 4 years of protests and the planned museum for the site is still, like many in Bahrain, just a dream. As my brother said in 2010 when I asked him what he thought about Bahrain " It will be nice when its finished" . That applies to the Khamis Mosque site. The Mosque is iconic, it has a great story to tell, but when attractions are closed, not well preserved and the visitor centre has not been built Bahrain cannot expect to reduce its reliance on Oil and Gas and promote Tourism.
