Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Every Thursday night at 8:00 PM there is a free performance of the music of Mohammed Bin Faris -- a mid to late twentieth century master of Bahraini music. Performances last from 90 minutes to two hours. As a westerner I could not understand the words, though locals told me most songs are celebrations of Bahrain. But as a human being I could not fail to get caught up in the energy and power of local music played by committed musicians.
The night I went, there were eight players, though I was told this can vary. There was an oud player, and violinist who were the main vocalists, a man who improvised non-stop on a variety of wooden flutes, an astounding zither player and four percussionists who occasionally also danced. The crowd -- entirely local -- clapped along on most numbers.
In a world that is increasingly homogenized this was a great chance to sample something local, beautiful and exciting.
You will be welcome when you get there, but it is not the easiest place to reach. First off, although Trip Advisor lists it in Manama, it is actually in Muharraq. Very difficult to park there; although I got a lift back to my hotel by locals but we had a long walk to their car. Hotel concierage and cab driver both had no idea where this was. However, Google Maps recognizes it and I directed the cab driver there using Google Maps. (You can run into issues with Google Maps sending you the wrong place in the Gulf Region (souks in particular) but they have this one right.
Still, you can't really get all the way there by cab because the streets give way to alleys. I am not sure these are the best directions but they will work. Have acab let you off at the corner of Sherif Hamad Avenue and Boomaher Avenue, and let Google Maps guide you down Boomaher to the right alleys. It was after dark, people were friendly and it felt safe. (Actually a local volunteered to show me the last few turns.) Once you've got that Hamad/Boomaher corner set with the cab driver, you can call the driver to pick you up there after the show.
Enjoy!

If you can find this music hall in the heart of Muharraq it will be one of the highlights of your trip to Bahrain. Google maps led us there successfully though when we entered Muhammad bin Faris House. The concerts are free on Thursday nights around 8pm but you can walk in at any time and will be welcome. The musicians play traditional Bahraini songs and the audience is mostly Bahrainis who know all the words. Follow this website for more information and a contact number to make sure the concert is happening http://www.shaikhebrahimcenter.org/th-binfaris.html

This venue is situated in Muharraq; the best way to locate it is to ask around -- but bear in mind that you may have to approach several people before you find it, as many locals didn't know it when we enquired, although it's in the middle of the neighbourhood. It seems to be an old building in which a new performance space has been built. Free sout (sometimes spelt 'sut') music is played here on Thursday evenings. Brochures from the Sheikh Ibrahim Cultural Centre state that the show starts at 20.30, but on the evening that I attended I arrived at this time and the music lasted only half an hour. The concierge then told me that the music had begun at 19.00 and ran for two hours. Apparently, the time depends on the hour of the final prayer of the day, so 'phone ahead to ask for the week's timing. I would think it would also be a good idea to check if the event takes place during Ramadan. Taxi drivers from Manama are unlikely to know the music hall, so make sure you leave plenty of time to get there.
The music is fabulous! Performed (of course) by an all-male group, it involves a large number of musicians, singers and dancers, and it gets the audience in the swing (ladies can clap their hands only; some Arab male members of the audience were dancing in the seating area and shouting encouragement to the dancers on the stage).
An evening spent listening to this music is an absolute highlight of any trip to Bahrain. If you're in town on a Thursday, do not miss this!

A great vibe in the middle of the old capital, this place is livened up with some of the nicest local Bahraini music. Perfectly located in a hidden area of Muharraq, you can continue your journey by exploring the Halwa shops, local souq and old alleyways.
