The Mount of Olives, the sacred and historical hillside across the Kidron Valley from the east gate of old Jerusalem is filled with numerous significant locations important in the life of Jesus Christ. While parts of the Mount have been otherwise developped, many areas have been developed as Churches to celebrate important episodes in the Life of Jesus Christ such as the Basilica of the Agony (Church of All Nations) celebrating Christ's Agony in the Garden; The Domini Flugit where Jesus cried over the city of Jerusalem; The Church of The Pater Noster where Christ taught His disciples how to pray; and the Garden of Gethsemane next to the Basilica of the Agony where Jesus Christ spent his last night in prayer.
All of these locations are well worth a visit, and should be mandatory for any visit to the Holy Land, but are all closely located - all on the Mount of Olives!

The Mount of Olives. It conjures up pictures in our hearts and minds of Jesus praying and the disciples sleeping on that fateful Thursday. The Mount offers a view of the Old City that orients you to what you will see there.

As you look at the graves of Christians, Muslims, and Jews you are reminded what an international and interreligious city Jerusalem is.

This is located outside the Old City of Jerusalem and is possible to go by foot even though it is not that near. This is a Jewish cemetery which is still in use and is a must see when in the city. The many coffins here is a sight to behold.

I spent most of a hot day walking around the hillside area that looks down on the city. There are lots of walkways and amazing views of the city and the beautiful Dome of the Rock mosque that stands out all the time.

I enjoyed walking around the busy Muslim quarter first and then stopped for lunch before visiting the various Jewish cemeteries that cover the hillside. I had hoped to go to the Russian Orthodox Church but was only open certain days by appointment. It was all walled off to so difficult to see. Shame. I continued to further viewing points, a number of tombs before making my way down to the Gethsemane area and the Franciscan church. This whole area and the mt area is a great exercise and there are lots to see as well as great views.

Capture expansive views of Temple Mount, the Kidron Valley and the 3,000 year old Jewish Cemetery on the hillside below, from the summit of the Mount of Olives. Walk up the steep narrow road after visiting the Garden of Gethsemane located at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Along the journey, visit the beautiful Church of Mary Magdalene; Dominus Flevit (The Lord Wept); and the Church of All Nations (Basilica of the Agony) adjacent to the Garden of Gethsemane. "Acts 1:9-12" writes of The Lord Jesus' ascension to Heaven from Mount of Olives, and it is here that "Zechariah 14:4" writes of The Lord's final return stepping down onto the Mount of Olives. Numerous Biblical references make this a must visit experience.

Mount of Olives with the Church of the Ascension is a main attraction on any tour of the holy land.
As ever it adds to the story you have known for years and certainly is one of the places that should be included in any tour of Jerusalem. Below is the Garden of Gethsemane/All
Nations Church which is a shortish walk below (down a steep road).
Visiting also provides some great views of the city below.

Nearly all tours and pilgrimages start from this spot because it affords an overview of the Old Town and the Kidron Valley with the Jewish Cemetery. For the amateur photographer, expect a few crowds during the day, but there is room to spread out and get the pictures. Do not forget to zoom and capture the cemetery below. Also the domes of the nearby Orthodox church are in view. A DSLR with a zoom lens oriented to scenic photography works well. Note: there is a fifteen minute walk available from the viewpoint down to the Garden of Gethsemane, but it is steep.

It is a wonderful place to look at the sunset over the old city. You can get a cab near the old city gates or simply walk up hill. We choose the later because we like to hike. You can see some old ruins, old jewish cemetery, russian church and a burial place of old prophets.

Lovely view and stop, travelling by bus, it was an excursion for our cruise. The view of Jerusalem is amazing from that place, historically very interesting to revisit the places where Jesus has been and left his memories and speeches. Lovely view of the old town, the Jewish cemetery. A must place in Jerusalem
