Having lived in the Holy Land for many years, I have visited this monastery several times. However, they now have limited locals from going inside the monastery without a prior reservation. I cannot even figure out how to make a reservation. It appears that they only want tour buses to enter in. I would think they could raise the entry fee and locals would still come. There were 6-7 cars parked outside the gate when I went. They walk around the outside of the monastery to get some of the views.
Also, there is a large sign that says to the View that locals can walk. In front of the sign is a huge garbage bin and garbage all over the ground. That is some view!

I have visited this Carmelite monastery 6 times over the last 5 years, my last visit was one week ago with my son and grandchildren, AND I NEVER GET TIRED OF BEING HERE! Without question the 360 degree panoramic view from the roof of the monastery is one of the best views in all of Israel, enabling the viewer to see most of the Carmel Mountain range including the Shofet Plateau, the Mediteranean Sea, the upper Sharon plain, the Jezreel Valley, the Gilboa Mountain range, and the Lower Galilee, including the most impressive Mount Tabor in the eastern distance. However, what attracts me personally even more is the range of possible hikes from the monastery. They are some of the best hikes in all of Israel. And each hike is better than the other. There is a 2 kilometer hike, suitable for children over age 5; and hikes of 6, 8, and 10 kilometers available from the monastery – all on well-marked color-marked trails. Interestingly, but purely coincidentally - the longer the hike the better the views. Look for the “red” trail that passes through the free parking lot of the monastery. Every time I have been here (always with family and/or friends), we have always begun the hike by first going up to the roof of the monastery and enjoying the astounding view, and then depending on the age of the others, I would choose the best suitable hiking “plan”. Every hiking “plan” always climaxes with an "extreme" (steep and rocky and yet relatively safe) hike up the steep cliff-like eastern side of the Carmel Mountains. It is an "extreme" hike for adults, all the more so for the children. They loved it!
These Carmelite monks claim that the battle between Elijah the Prophet and the pagan priests of Baal in actually took place here and not at Stella Maris (inside Haifa itself) as is popularly believed. Based on their evidence and my own reading of the scripture - I BELIEVE THEM!

This sanctuary and monastery sits atop Mount Carmel. The large statue of Elijah reflects the Lord's victory over the prophets of Baal, there is a quaint chapel on the grounds, and an easy walk up a flight of stairs will take you to the roof for a 360-degree view of the area. There's even a large 'compass' painting on the floor of the observation desk pointing to different locations and areas viewable from the top.
The grounds are not extensive so you will not need a lot of time here and be prepared to be encountered by a vendor selling wooden and plastic-beaded necklaces on your way out. He started off offering 4 for $6, however after a little bartering gave into 6 for $4. :)

I went to this place with a Pastor who knew all the history in the area. He was able to describe to us in detail what happened in the area which made the place come to life ! After hearing his explanation of the history, it made be believe that this was the location in which Elijah defeated the others. If you go here and don't understand the this history, it just become a place with a nice view...go with someone who understands the bible and can tell you the history of this place.
You might want to go on a clear and cool day. We went and it was clear but very hot.

From Dalyat El Carmel a Driuze village going South on the road going to Elyakim you arrive to a narrow road going East with brown sign Muhraka. one of the peaks of Carmel where Elias met the 450 priests of Baal with the small Carmelite Church and Monastery

We go frequently - it is not tooo far away from where we live and for morning out it can be very pleasant. On the Carmel mountain, near to the Druze village of Daliat-el-Karmil, the place is well maintained with convenient free parking.

This place is located in the middle of the vast Carmel national forest. Don't be surprised if you see families and friends enjoying a picnic on a saturday morning just outside.

Peaceful. Gorgeous views of the valley, especially from the roof of the monastery. And a beautiful drive in the mountains and woods from the Druse villages, away from the hubbub of Dado beach.

Our tour visited because of the association of Elijah battling the priests of Baal at this site. Because of that association, I particularly enjoyed the monument outside with Elijah holding a sword above his head, but also the representations of Elijah found in the small chapel in the building that most of our group missed. The chapel is simple and beautiful, and only needs a few minutes of time to visit, but meaningful because of the events traditionally associated with this spot. Of course, on top of the building we were able to look out over the Jezreel Valley and enjoy the spectacular view, as well as the cooler weather because of the increased elevation.

This is a sweet little place tucked away on Mt. Carmel. There's a nice statue to commemorate Elijah slaying the prophets of Baal, but the true beauty in the panoramic views you get from the roof.
