Neighbourhood: Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.

Beautiful carpet store outside the Grand Bazaar. We learned a great deal about this ancient art of hand-woven carpets from the sales manager [Salman (sp?)] whose family has been in the business of Turkish carpets for generations.
We learned about the weaving and the dye-making process, and the master weaver was also there to show us how the knotting process worked (although our sales manager actually showed us how to weave while she left her seat)
The selection of carpets was extraordinary and the service was highly professional. Recommended by our local guide who himself had bought a carpet from Vezirhan for his parents, we purchased a beautiful carpet that will grace our living room for years to come.
As mentioned by others, touring the building where the store is located is an experience in itself!

We had a WONDERFUL experience working with Salman at Vezirhan. This was the most fun part of our visit in Istanbul! We purchased rugs for ourselves and my father. Vezirhan shipped the rugs to California (USA) and they arrived within 3 weeks. More importantly, Salman set the expectation that they would arrive within 4 weeks and they arrived sooner. Excellent!
Salman was kind, generous with his time, spoke perfect English, and shared a wealth of knowledge. We felt no pressure to make a purchase; the process was extremely fun! Obviously the rugs are incredible. Vezirhan has a massive collection in a beautiful building.
We researched and interviewed multiple rug vendors in Istanbul. We have high confidence that Vezirhan is a business of great integrity which is why we chose to work with them. Thank you, Salman! We hope to meet again.

I was escorted to this carpet store along with my small tour group by our guide. Later I was told that I most likely overpaid if a guide brought me there, but honestly I was completely uninterested in going about this experience alone and would have probably paid even more somewhere else.
The shop is quiet and relaxed, everyone was served hot tea while they waited, and and the sales pitch was really more informative (type of rug, how you would clean it, etc), and very low pressure.
People working in this store were respectful and spoke fluent English or German.
In the end I bought a small wool carpet for $450 and left satisfied with my purchase. The only reasons I recommend to pay cash are:
1) There are no returns anyway.
2) You may be able to negotiate a better price.
3) Shortly after I made a credit card purchase at this store I had fraudulent charges start to appear on my credit card statement.
I'm not accusing anyone at this store of doing anything dishonest (I also made one other purchase that day at a different store so who knows what exactly happened), but if I someday return to Istanbul I plan to use cash only for purchases around town. Better to play it safe and also to stay on a budget.

We bought two carpets and paid several thousand dollars for them; they were delivered today with a stated value of $725. One of the rugs is supposedly silk but the shipping manifest states it is cotton with a stated value of $125; we paid over $4,000 for this carpet. Something is not right here. I am calling Visa up now to see what remedy is available, if any. We are sick about this.

In a city filled with shops selling beautiful carpets, it can be difficult to know where to go to shop or browse for a carpet. A local acquaintance steered us towards this shop and we left 2 hours later the happy owners of three of the most beautiful carpets we have ever seen and sorry that we couldn't buy several more. The shop is a not far from the Grand Bazaar, but seems worlds away in terms of the shopping experience. Instead of trying to look at carpets in a tiny shop or crowded space, this spacious shop makes it easy to take your time as they show you one beautiful carpet after another. They even have a woman weaving silk carpets on-site, so you can see how the carpets are made and the complexity of the process. All of the carpets were hand-woven in Turkey, covering a number of styles. Some of the smaller silk carpets are works of art and many of these end up being hung on walls (just too beautiful to let my Golden Retrievers track their sometimes muddy paws on!). Happy shopping!

Located in a caravanseri formerly used by ancient travelers and tradesmen on the fabled Silk Road, this carpet store possessed a unique quality totally from an architectural standpoint. Couple this with learning about and seeing silk cocoons, how the silk threads are pulled and dyed -- watching a master weaver as she worked the pattern for a rug -- then seeing the display of all different sizes and colors of carpets was an incredible experience and one I would recommend to any traveler coming to Istanbul. I bought a small silk carpet, woven by a master weaver taking 10 months to complete. It arrived today and it is gorgeous; I am very pleased with it!

My home has always been filled with Oriental rugs, so I frankly knew nothing about Turkish rugs before visiting this shop. Admittedly, I had no intentions of shopping in Istanbul. I was even warned to avoid the Grand Bazaar entirely. However, our tour guide told us he wanted to show us this shop and particularly the building, which is centuries old. He explained there was absolutely no pressure to purchase anything, but that the guides are encouraged to show visitors because carpet-making is a dying art in Turkey. I now know, it is truly an art! As the other reviewers noted, you are welcomed in traditional Turkish style with an offer of coffee or tea. We observed a young woman working on an incredibly intricate, beautiful silk rug. They explained the process of how the women work (it is traditionally an art form for women in rural areas), how long it can take to make such exquisite rugs and how the country is helping to keep this craft alive. I learned so much during this visit, beyond just being shown beautiful rugs. I really did not feel pressured to buy one, but perhaps that is the mark of a good salesman also. Of course, I picked out one of the most expensive designs (out of my price range). However, I did purchase one of their smaller silk carpets and was able to bargain a bit for the price. We received a certificate of authenticity and cleaning instructions. Had we chosen to, the store will also ship at no cost to you. A photo cannot even capture the beauty of our carpet, but it is the blue one on top to the right. It really is a treasure and we plan to frame it, as many people do. This was a completely unexpected purchase and priceless experience.

Going to Turkey, we naturally planned to purchase a Turkish carpet. We’d planned to go to the Grand Bazaar and just pick a shop.
Our guide recommended Vezirhan for quality and reputation. (Our guide as recommended by my friends in Turkey, and you can read my review on her here in TripAdvisor as well - she was FANTASTIC. )
The facility is beautiful and their selection was mind-boggling. The experience itself was like nothing I’ve ever seen. They showed us the weaving process in action and we were able to weave a bit ourselves (I’m not quitting my day job 😊).
We ended up spending a bit more than we’d intended, but we now have a family heirloom that will remain in our family for generations.
We maybe could have saved some money by going elsewhere, but between the experience and the quality of the product, I was extremely happy.

I had no idea what to expect when I entered Vezirhan. It was an amazing journey back into time, watching the craft of rug making that has been the same for 2000 years. They showed me the silk cocoons, how the silk was dyed, and I was able to actually see a master weaver as she worked the on a beautiful rug. I purchased a rug made by this master weaver and I will cherish it forever. I am a travel agent and would love to take a group of travelers here just to purchase rugs! I was treated like a VIP and it felt like they were all there for me. The qualify of the rugs was phenomenol. This is a must see if you are in Instanbul.

This was a surprising part of a tour my wife and I did. We knew that we were going there, but we did not know it would be such an experience. It was very enjoyable and we learnt so much about carpets - from seeing the process for extracting silk, to the weaving of a carpet, and then learning what to look for in regards to quality. We ended up buying a carpet, but not because we felt pressured to, but because we wanted one. Highly recommend coming here, but if you're looking to buy a carpet, this place is a must. Allow yourself at least a couple of hours.
