We reached out to Gourmet Holidays when we had a 9 hour layover in Istanbul and wanted to see the city. Gocken responded to my inquiry almost immediately and worked with me to customize our itinerary (to accommodate our travel times and interests) and it didn't even end up costing us more than their normal tour. I found that Gourmet... More

I was fortunate enough to attend this cooking class & lunch in Istanbul which turned out to be one the best travel experiences I have had in a long time. Not only did I learn a lot about the history, culture and diversity of food in but it was a really enjoyable and relaxed experience with a lot of great... More

This is definitely a great choice as it is a uniquely educational and entertaining experience. The stories and the turkish coffee were just fantastic, and even though I cannot cook well myself, we had a lot of fun in the kitchen too. The guide and the chef were just great. Definitely recommended.

I attended Gokcen's "Gourmet Holidays" class with some friends and it was definitely one of the highlights of my week. The class I attended focused on Black Sea cuisine, which is really different than other Turkish cuisine. The chef was hilarious and really good at showing us all the steps in making the dishes (which I am excited to replicate...... More

I attended the Royal Ottoman class, the only one of its kind in Istanbul. It was so educational and savoury. Our chef Hakan made the experience very entertaining and took the time to share stories and make the recipes easy to understand. He keeps your attention with humor and stories.Throughout the lesson, he explained to us the Royal Ottoman cuisine... More

The Black Sea Cooking class was fantastic! The cuisine of Turkey is so amazing that it will be one of the things I miss most when I leave to go home. Going to this class not only gave an opportunity to focus on and learn about one specific type of country’s famous food, but it also allowed me to hold... More

I had always been interested in Ottoman cuisine but it is not readily available in Istanbul. This tour was exactly what I had hoped it would be. Full of information about the cuisine with unique dishes not on any menu in Istanbul I have ever seen. On the intro tour with Gökçen we got a great intro to Turkish ingredients... More

The experience started with a quick tour of some of the most exciting side streets around Istiklal Cadessi where I saw some amazing ingredients. The guide, Gokcen, told us all about the history of Turkish cooking, the main point being that nobody can cooks better than their mother. We then went for a delicious Turkish coffee with yet more stories... More

I had a delightful time at the Ottoman Cooking Class hosted by Gökçen and Hakan. It was in 2 parts. First Gökçen took us on a walk to the kitchen- as we walked, he explained about Turkish cuisine- its origins, history and interesting anecdotes. He was extremely knowledgeable about the subject and it was a joy to listen to him... More

I'm not someone that usually likes tours because my idea of holidays is about discovering new places myself, so it was such a pleasurable surprise to spend time around this beautiful city seeing the everyday culture. This included being taken to the best Turkish coffee cafe, with the tour guide and small sized group it felt from the beginning that... More

Staying in Beyoglu

Neighbourhood Profile
Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.
