We had a lovely day with Oguz, first exploring the stores and restaurants of the area off Istiklal Street, filled with sellers of fish, spices, pickles and, of course, Turkish delights. We then headed to his lovely light filled kitchen with stunning views of the city to cook up all the vegetables and groceries we'd bought along the way. We... More

We started out the day with a tour of the fish market. This included a tour of several of the stores, tastes of smoked fish, spices, and sweets, as well as fascinating details about the foods and tastes of Turkey. We were a small group and as there wasn’t an evening class afterwards, we a good two hours going through... More

This was one of the most fun cooking classes I've ever taken! It started with a walk through a local neighborhood where we shopped for ingredients we would need for dinner. While we worked our way through the neighborhood shopping we also stopped to sample many items along the way. Oguz even helped us with our shopping for things to... More

My wife and I recently visited Oguz and took a class at his school. First off, he was so helpful in scheduling us last minute and helping with my wife's food allergy. She has Celiac disease and he even rearranged the menu so that only one dish had wheat in it! We were in check in limbo so he met... More

I was invited by a friend and was pleased to learn new Turkish recipes as well as explore unknown shops in the city. Met a great couple who was visiting the city. Oz was very accommodating to one group member who did not eat wheat products. Highly recommend.

We visited Istanbul for the Easter weekend and absolutely loved it. The cooking class with Oguz was one of the biggest highlights of our trip! I am vegetarian and although I forgot to tell him before the class, co-incidentally most of the dishes we cooked were veggie! We made houmous, stuffed peppers, halva, aubergine dip (my fave!) and bourek. I... More

As a family of 5 (parents and young adult children), we joined 5 or 6 others participants from all over the world. A fun, interesting group - lots of networking about touring Turkey commenced. This 5-hour class was really divided into two parts: shopping and cooking. SHOPPING: Even in the pouring rain, we were able to investigate the markets. After... More

What a pleasure it was to spend an evening with Oguz, learning classic Turkish dishes while talking about Turkish culture and life in Istanbul. The tour starts with an interesting walk through small side streets off Istiklal near Taksim Square, where we learned about different ingredients and got to taste fresh ingredients. It was a great introduction to some of... More

Staying in Beyoglu

Neighbourhood Profile
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.
