Top ways to experience Balat
The area
Neighbourhood: Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.

- JosemikeAlexandria, Virginia143 contributionsBalat—A Jewel Not to MissBalat is a simply beautiful little colorful town in Istanbul. Here you’ll find many wonderful tea houses, small shops and restaurants. We had a typical Turkish breakfast here and loved it. Most of all, I loved the quaintness and smallness of the town with a mix of people of different religions, the shopping is great because the stores are all small and authentic. If you come to Istanbul, I would highly recommend visiting Balat.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 November 2023

- Kamlesh BoodhooVacoas-Phoenix49 contributionsEarly morning Strolling in BalatBalat: A Charming Yet Gritty Istanbul Neighborhood Wandering through Balat's steep, winding streets reveals a captivating slice of old Istanbul. Colorful houses line the narrow lanes, their vibrant facades a stark contrast to the weathered, sometimes crumbling structures nearby. The neighborhood's character is evident in its eclectic mix of trendy cafes and traditional shops nestled among historic buildings. As you ascend the hilly terrain, you'll encounter pockets of abandonment—small, cobwebbed houses that hint at Balat's complex history. While the area's authenticity is part of its appeal, it's hard to ignore a general sense that cleanliness and hygiene standards may not be up to par in some areas. Despite its rough edges, Balat offers a unique and memorable experience for those willing to explore its charms and quirks.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 September 2024
- AidaTehran, Iran89 contributionsBalat has some beauty, but it may not be as stunning as other areas.Balat is certainly beautiful, although perhaps not enough to spend an entire day. It's definitely worth a visit at least once. The colorful houses are charming, although I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 September 2024

Waste of time if you are not looking for Adrenalin: it’s a shady poor neighbourhood of Istanbul - in my opinion really dangerous area.... The colourful buildings that we came to see appeared to be really colourful buildings located in between dilapidated old and ugly buildings.
We were happy to take few pics and catch taxi to escape:).
Reminded me about Napolitanian neighbourhood / Sanita:)

Kaffamiro Cafe/Restaurant
My friends told me to visit this cafe for sure on my trip to Istanbul. Kaffamiro is located in the heart of Balat. Its a very art focused cafe where u can take a break to get energized with a nice coffee and very delicious sweets. The old roman home where rebuilt as a very comfy and warm cafe. The original wooden doors and ceiling, and also windows are still used. I got in love with this place. In the first floor there was a gallery with some interesting paintings.
You should definitely visit when u are in Istanbul! The white wooden piano is waiting to be played. I will come back for sure in summer.

Balat is one of the old neighborhoods of Istanbul, which is located in the Fatih district of Istanbul and in the European part. The Balat district is located within the Old City, on the west coast of the Golden Horn of Istanbul, and was inhabited by Greeks and Jews. There is much speculation about the origin of the name Balat, but it is possible that the word is derived from the Greek word palation meaning palace; Because Balat neighborhood was located near Blasharneh Palace. Balat neighborhood is sometimes written in other forms such as Balat. When you enter this neighborhood, it is as if you have traveled to the heart of history and decades ago.

I visited the Balat neighborhood as part of a day tour that also included the neighborhoods of Fatih and Fener. The neighborhood is enriched with very colorful traditional buildings and several murals, making it the ideal destination for a pleasant walk. The neighborhood, unlike the two mentioned above, is touristy, but not yet a victim of mass tourism.

Balat is in the old city on the European side of Istanbul, on the western shore of the Golden Horn, sandwiched between Fener and Ayvansaray. Historically, it was the centre of the Jewish community in Istanbul. Balat is a district that has traditionally been home to minorities in the city, with many Jewish families and Greek Orthodox families making it their homes.

One of the many neighborhoods in Istanbul to visit if you have enough time after the main top attractions. It can be easily reached on foot from the center or with the tram on the surface with 3 stops arriving right in front of the church on the Bosphorus and from there you start walking along the colorful streets and every street is an open-air museum. You get lost in the beauty of the artisan shops, of the small bars that serve tea to the tourists sitting at the small tables on the street. It's worth seeing. We didn't go up to the mosque at the top because of the steep climb.

On my first visit to Istanbul I didn’t get to this area. We visited it today and were pleasantly surprised. If you go to certain places in the area, it’s quite specific: the smell, laundry on wires, construction debris, etc. But on the other hand, this also needs to be seen and felt in some sense. Well, on these more tourist streets it’s very colorful... and even just clean, unlike the historical center... The houses are colorful and the atmosphere...

The colorful Balat is located slightly outside the city center but is easily accessible by tram. The best option is to take the tram to the Fener station, from where you can explore the neighborhood on foot. The houses there look fantastic, almost like something out of another world. There are many trendy cafés and restaurants, and it's a little less crowded than other parts of the city.
One negative thing I noticed was the litter on the streets, which really shocked me. I hope that this will change in the future.

Istanbul is a very beautiful city that totally deserves the definition of a bridge between West and East. The two sides both hold very different but equally beautiful jewels two people all the Cistern Basilica in the European side and the Dolmabahçe Palace in the Asian one. Not everything is wonderful, the city is permeated by smells not really pleasant so they are strong. There are parts of the city, like Balat, that are advertised as very pleasant, whereas in reality they are just nice and very run down and infamous.

I highly recommend to use the bus and then walk couple of minutes! Public transportation is so good and cheap at Istanbul so you don’t need to use a taxi for my opinion! Walking also in this neighborhood is amazing!

Not sure about a photographer, but while we were on tour, we did see a wedding couple getting their pictures taken against some pretty colorful backgrounds, and they appeared to have a professional photographer with them. Sorry, but I do not have a more definitive answer than this.

Насколько помню нужно пройти до набережной и сесть на речной трамвай, остановка будет так и называться "Болат"

Скажите,пожалуйста,как далеко это находится от Грандбазара?И как оттуда можно добраться в этот район.
Спасибо за ответ!
Written 13 November 2019
