The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.

    Pretty place, overpriced items
Take pictures, but buy elsewhere unless you are in a hurry. I am not sure if the spices are higher grade than elsewhere in Istanbul, because the prices for spices and dried fruits are double compared to regular shops in Istanbul! However the little shops outside along the roads around the spice market are worth visiting to purchase.

    Truly a great experience!
Exceptionally good in our opinion. The colours and scents were intoxicating, love the coloured spices, dried flower teas, olives, nougats, Turkish delight. All so brilliant. Building of arches that reminded us of cathedrals. No shopkeepers dragging you into the shop to buy their products. Only an offering of nougats and Turkish delight for sampling.

    Tread Carefully
The stores were pretty much all of the same genre. The displays were mind-boggling with their fragrances and colors. It's so tempting to go in and ask for a teensy bag of our favorite spice. While you taste said spice, they ply you wth samples of "suggested" teas and other spices. So who can resist a taste? By the time you've had a taste of various products, I ended up with 5 bags of teas and spices. Small scoops were used for each bag, much larger scoops that I had intended. Then they air-packed each bag free (Ioved that amenity). And then gave me an air packed bag of free nuts because we bought such a "large order". At that point it hit me that my little bags of spices and teas were going to cost me $98. I was so shocked, I did not ask for a lower price (that's on me!). Always ask for price as you go along and demand (haggle) the customary best price at the end. When I got home I found that the spices were excellent and the teas refreshing.

    Spicy!!
Well ... there's certainly lots of choice. It's pretty exotic to Western eyes. Lots of spices etc that I simply did not recognise. Many stalls are selling the same of similar things, but itr is a joy to wandre round and sample the complex aromas .

    So much more than spices!
So much more than just spices! We wound up here 3 times during our 4-day stay because one of our group had seen something and wanted to return for it, or we remembered someone we needed to get a gift for. Spices, dried fruits, lokum, Turkish souvenirs, cheeses, meats, and on and on and on.

Tips about restrooms, tastings and spices
    1. Restrooms: around the corner down the escalator. For a fee 2 definitely come as early as possible. The market gets PACKED later in the day 3. All stalls are the same and the prices are more or less the same 4. Lots of samples to taste 5. Some spices are awesome. Some spices are just blah, meaning they taste and smell great at the bazaar, but once packaged and brought home, absolutely no flavor. I don’t know why. We bought cabin spice that lost all its flavor once we opened it at the house. For some chicken spice, that one tastes amazing

    An experience not to miss
What a unique experience, the colour and the rows and rows of shops selling spices was really special and I was pleased I took this in as part of my trip. Sampled the Turkish Delight, not the jelly stuff but some proper Turkish Delight and immediately decided I needed to take some back. This was vacuum packed to keep it fresh. This is a can’t miss experience,

Always a delight to stroll through!
Always a delight to stroll through! It’s almost sensory overload at this delightful bazaar! Aromatic spices and a rainbow of colours. Merchants are friendly but not pushy, which makes for a very enjoyable browse! Located in the Eminönü district, the Spice Bazaar can be found just across from the New Mosque. As well, it’s only a few minutes walk to/from the Grand Bazaar.

Expensive but a nice place to explore
I loved the Spice Market. Yes, it’s expensive, so I browsed and didn’t buy. But I LOVED strolling and looking at everything. Some stalls were more aggressive than others but overall it was a much more peaceful experience than the Grand Bazar. It gets crowded later in the day.

    A spice market without spices.
This bazaar is more interesting than the Great Bazar close by even if it is quite small and can be walked though in less than 10 min. However, the name is rather misleading. There are not especially much spices here, if you don't count tea and baklava as spices. It is nothing like the Khan el Khalili bazar in Cairo, in both a good and a bad perspective. No intensive hawking here, much more relaxed, but no colourful sacks of spices either. It's an easy spot to get to, the tram and metro is just outside, so it should be on your itinerary, but it wil most likely not be the place to buy exotic spices from.

A real sensory explosion walking in here!
I enjoyed this more than the Grand Bazaar, and spent way more time browsing that I meant to. Not to mention walking out with about 6 types of spices and teas on my way out.
Best advise is to not feel pressured into buying anything just because you were invited in and given a cup of tea (although I did end up buying a type of menthol tea that blew my sinuses wide open!), and take your time and browse up and down once before you pick a stall. Most of the shop keepers are content to just leave you alone to window shop if that's what you want.
Well worth a trip, just allow a few hours if you're going in with some cash burning a hole in your pocket!

A huge bazaar with huge varieties of spices and candies.
1. Without doubt, it is one of the most famous covered shopping complex in Turkey.
2. There are many over priced stuffs over there. Remember to bargain as most of them will charge you more than it should be. The staff are overwhelming friendly, so you can try many sweets as you want before choosing what you want to buy exactly.
3. Even though the stuff are over priced, you can still train your bargaining skill over there or browse them. It is never a disadvantage of going to a place without buying things. The most important thing is you experience it.
4. Anyway, remember to bring enough money if you want to spend your money over there and be careful of pick pockets :)

We visited after having been to the Grand Bazaar. By comparison this is smaller, brighter and more comfortable to walk around once you get through the scrum to get inside. The shop keepers aren't as pushy to make a sale but still willing to haggle a bit. They've done a good job restoring the bazaar.

This market is much smaller than Grand Bazaar, but at the same time much much nicer. Here you can find less of leather goods and clothing, but more local food, spices, teas, sweets, nuts and stuff like that. Everything’s very fresh and organic. So if you are a foodie, than this market is just for you! The market itself is very beautiful, clean and easy to navigate.

This market is over 350 years old and still going strong today. It is a great place to browse and purchase spices that are difficult or expensive to get back home like ground cardamon in our case!

Adjacent to the market down the side street are a number of street sellers selling lokum much cheaper than in the market. We also found a guy selling bbq corn on the cob at the rear of the market really cheaply (less than £1 each). Delicious!

You can’t really got to Istanbul and not visit the spice market. The smells, colours and atmosphere are intoxicating and are a snapshot of times gone by in the w1st century. Prices may appear high, but don’t hesitate to barter, as we found an easy discount of 20% was achieved without much effort. There are some wonderful and legendary products on offer and if spice is your thing, then you will find almost everything under the sun. You shouldn’t miss it.

Had a wonderful time roaming in and around the Spice Market where u can actually get more than just spices. I bought spices of course, curios, knick-knacks, lokum, etc. Loved the whole feel of the place. One tip for all wanderers on a tight budget: Enjoy the inside shops for the feel but browse the shops outside for better bargains. They let u sample everything!!!

My wife was looking for a few spices, some figs and we would call it a day. But we got suckered into getting A LOT more than we needed or asked for. 200 dollars worth! When my wife pointed to a spice the guy immediately opened a bag and started scooping. She only wanted a small handful. I presume he knew that. He proceeded to start removing the excess spice but you start feeling self conscious saying take out more....more....more...and then he's like this is so little? So my introverted wife got tricked into buying at least twice as much spice as she needed. Be very confident and forthright, make them go slow, weigh how much you're getting. Make them itemize it before you pay.

First of all, a little correction on the name of the market: its actually Misr (not Misir) Carsisi, because its the Egyptian (=Misr) Bazaar. Sorry about this, but as I am a big fan of Egypt, I had to point this out :-).

The spice market is in a quite beautiful building and is a bit more relaxed than the grand bazaar. Touts are still quite active, but not as bad as in the grand bazaar, where I really hated it because of them. I wanted to buy spices, tea and turkish delight, so I choose a stall selling all the things I wanted, to minimize the stress. We left the market with about 2.5 kgs ;-). I didnt compare prices, but felt that I got a fair deal and I am happy about what I bought, and look forward to use it and to present it.

We enjoyed browing around the Spice Market even though there was a lot of repetition and redundancy. If you find something at a store you like, be sure to note the number or take a photo because it may be hard to find it again next time. The stuff that is priced higher does seem to be better quality but I was always a little worried I was getting ripped off. I bought gummi bears, tea, soaps and spices.
