Neighbourhood: Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.

Doğançay Museum, Turkey's First Contemporary Art Museum, opened its doors to the public in 2004. Located in a 150-year-old five-storey historical building in Beyoğlu, the Museum exhibits a small retrospective of Burhan Doğançay's works and the works of his father Adil Doğançay. The Artist's Works in the Museum Cover His Fifty Years of Artistic Development, Starting from His Early Figurative Paintings, to His Works and Photographs Inspired by City Walls. Doğançay Museum, in cooperation with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Sponsor Companies, has been organizing juried art competitions in Basic Education Schools since 2005 and sharing the results with the public. Every year, an average of 7 thousand students aged 8-14 from 1500 schools participate in this event. The Museum plans to continue these competitions, which aim to support education through art, in the future.

I visit this Museum everytime I go to Istanbul. This Museum is the first private Museum of Turkey. It contains the artwork of world famous Turkish artist Burhan Dogancay and his father Adil Dogancay. Small, cosy and free of charge entrance. If you want to know more about the most famous Turkish artist, it is a must see in Istanbul.

I noticed this museum accidentally as i was walking around Nevizade area and Balo street. The free entrance sign motivated me to check out what is inside. I entered and it was a 3 floor gallery with different images taken bythe artist DOGANCAY over a forty something years from different parts of the world! The photos are educative, ,realsitic, spontaneous (from real life streets) and thought provoking, i liked mostly the photos of walls taken. so smart. I recommend visiting it as your are strolling the streets. will not take a lot of your time or energy and will give you motive to travel more, walk more, explore more and click more!

we found this museum when we were strolling on the streets in the back of Istiklal. It was a lovely private museum. We spent a short but good time in a calm atmosphere.

Dogancay museum is the first private museum in Turkey featuring the works of Burhan Dogancay. The museum reflects his masterpieces from shadows to collage artworks. It is the only place in the world where guests can appreciate all these works in one place! Central location and easy to access. Must go!!!

A visit to Istanbul should include the Dogancay Museum. It is located in the crazy district of Beyoglu - an oasis of beauty and culture. Burhan Dogancay was not only a fabulous contemporary painter but a photographer as well. The museum is housed in a restored historical building - a work of art itself. The diverse works of Burhan are sure to delight all. The museum also has a wonderful gift store!

Dogancay Museum, in Beyoglu, located halfway between Taksim and Tunel is a well designed museum displaying the different stages of late Turkish Contemporary artist Burhan Dogancay.

At the end of a street (Balo) cutting ever busy pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi, Dogancay Museum is a must for those who are interested in Contemproray Turkish Art. The son of a well known painter, Burhan spent many years abroad mostly in Newyork, and in his late years decided to spend more time in Turkey and opened this museum to display the development of his artistery through his personal collection.

150 years old Beyoğlu building is renovated in 2004 to serve as a museum . No fee for entrance , a small yet impressive gift corner, friendly museum keeper, chance to have a cup of tea in a cozy tea room with a collection of photos taken during artist's travels . The small museum is on four floors, where the elevator takes you to the top floor of earlier works and a corner dedicated to his well known fathers paintings and some of his father's personal belongings. As you decend you can witness his artistic evolution, in well lit rooms with a good selection of his various techniques, with proper explanation.

If you are into art do not miss this small yet important museum, located in the middle of road for Beyoglu visitors where there also are several galeries to stop by around the museum.

No parking not even standing on the tiny street, you can reach by a cab if not walking or use subway (same distance from taksim or sishane stops).Open everyday 10am 6pm , do not forget to sign the museum journal before you exit.

This is a museum that we frequently visit and one we will continue to take our three-year daughter Jacqueline Nil to long as we live in Istanbul. The late-Burhan Doğançay was a lucky man, one who was able to travel the world and the seven seas, documenting his travels with his camera and canvas. My wife Özlem and I were lucky enough to have met his acquaintance. His promotion of the arts in the local community, especially with his annual interscholastic painting competitions held in conjunction with the Istanbul Greater Municipality were particularly noteworthy. The personnel are friendly and helpful as well.

Tucked away among the bustling alleys of Beyoglu you'll find this great little gallery, packed to the rafters with work from one of Turkey's most talented artists. My partner and I visited in December and very much enjoyed the exhibition of photographs on display. Though small, the gallery is perfectly formed - by all accounts Docancay was prolific and it's clear they rotate the collection on a fairly regular basis. A very enjoyable place to visit, and easily combined with a trip to The Museum of Innocence - a must see.
