The area
Neighbourhood: Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.

My husband and I had an hour-long workshop of Marble painting with Josh. It was a real pleasure and pure fun. First we were a bit shy but Josh helped us to relax, being very inspiring and cheering us up all the time. We left Caferaga Medresse happy and full of joy, next day dropped in again to take our masterpieces that were drying. If you are in Istanbul you should not miss the opportunity to learn this ancient art with Josh and you will get the best Istanbul souvenir with you back home - your own painting.
You should better book your work-shop in advance.

This place is a hidden gem in Istanbul and the best thing about it--beyond the shady courtyard, the small rooms full of handicrafts and artisans working away--is the opportunity to observe Josh doing Ebru. The art of Ebru or water marbling is magical; Josh has a tray in front of him, splashes color onto it, makes mesmerizing designs, and makes all this look easy, which it absolutely isn't. People burst into spontaneous applause when he's done. The man is also a gifted calligrapher, painter, and jewelry maker; he's generous with his time and will hand you your name in beautiful lettering with a flourish. This place is a must-visit for Istanbul. The staff in general are the most warm-hearted souls you will meet. I came back after three years and they remembered me and asked about my family and friends, all of whom they also remembered.

I was lucky enough to have a friend recommend this centre to me when I was traveling to Istanbul - Tucked behind Aye Sophia, it is a beautiful spot with awe-inspiring art work. Best to call ahead if you can, but if you just show up they'll do their best for you. I met the resident artist, Coskun Uzunkaya, who is extremely gifted as well as warm and friendly and he took the time to teach me the ancient art of Ebru (water painting), rapidly swirling up a master piece, while we listened to tranquil and inspiring music, then let me create to my heart's content. It was probably one of the best experiences in Istanbul - I'd highly recommend it to anyone!
Additionally, the handicraft store across from the gallery has beautiful wares and is much friendlier and easier to handle than the Grand Bazaar...

I met Coşkun with my travel group to learn how to make Ebru. It was very interesting and i woumd have liked to spend more time over there ! Then i came back with my husband and we spent time with Coşkun, talking about the different lessons they have in this place : ceramic, ebru, calligraphy, music etc ... this is so interesting and beautiful ! This is such a great place to spend time. It is very close to the Ayasofya but the place is isolated from the sound and crowd ! Go over there, you won’t be disappointed !
Çok teşekkür ederiz ;)

This hidden handicraft centre is very interesting and might seduce you to spend some money or to go in for ebru. Precondition: the artist must be there. Unfortunately this was not the case when I visited the place, so I tell you to find out when he is absent, and when not, before you go.

We were there to learn marbling. We did our marbling class with Coskun, who was very patient and supportive and gave us space to be creative. Feeling incredibly grateful for this chance - for me it was the first time I have ever done marbling. The atmosphere was so beautiful, the music was great and we were offered tea. Definitely something I reccomend to anyone who wishes to learn something new and relax in an inspiring way!

four of us dropped in and took a one hour class in paper marbling. The instructor (Coskun) was really great and spoke English. He demonstrated the technique and then we tried it. None of us are artists. It was so easy and so fun. People dropped in and watched us and thought we knew what we were doing! The finished products were remarkable. This will be a very memorable part of our trip to Turkey. We recommend it!

Our group of 6 stumbled across this gem on a recent trip to Istanbul. We became interested in Ebru (Turkish Marbling Painting) prior to our trip, but had forgotten to book a class. By chance we met Ebru artist and instructor Coskun Ozunkaya who also manages the cultural art gallery located near Hagia Sophia. This turned out to be one of our most enjoyable experiences of the trip (or of any trip we've been on.). Coskun is an amazing artist and a wonderful ambassador for his country, his culture and the arts. We took a one hour private lesson in this 1000-year old Turkish art and were simply enthralled. Any age can enjoy this, whether you have an artistic bone in your body or not!

Hidden between the Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cisterns is this 16th century oasis for artisans built by Sinan. The original dorms are now studios/ galleries surrounding a courtyard where you can escape for a quiet glass of tea. The quality of the Turkish crafts exceeds what you will find at the Bazaar. And the gallery at street side run by Coşkun Uzunkaya (Josh) is amazing and full of unique art and treasures.
This was our second visit in five years, and the thrill and joy in visiting this Madrasa this time was even greater. Josh, as an accomplished artist in his own right, makes everyone not just feel welcomed but part of his family. We will be back again the next time we find ourselves in Istanbul.

If you're in Sultanahmet area as a random tourist you may easily miss this spot as it is hidden succesfully. It's just behind Saint Sophia and Yerebatan Cistern. You may observe here how some traditional craftman work and buy some quality soveniers or just have something to drink in this quite, peaceful atmospher far from the outside crowd.
