The Historical and Luxurious Art of BathingHistorical and Architectural Features“I hope that until the end of days, good hearted friends who take a look at what I have made, when they will perceive the seriousness and the spirit of my effort, can have a fair view and can invoke my name to pray for me.” Mimar Sinan, ArchitectThe Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam in Istanbul was designed and built by Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman architect. It was built at the request of Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), the wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century. It was built where the ancient public baths of Zeuxippus used to stand, between the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The area is also particularly significant as the site where the Temple of Zeus once stood.

Nice experience of visit to this historical Turkish bath though little expensive. Well maintained and very clean. My Masseur Mr.Abu Baker was well versed in english and was professional in his job. Initially I felt little claustrophobic because of inclosed surroundings but he helped me in getting acclimatized by opening the small entrence door for a while. Later it was... More

While me and my husband were in Istanbul, we really wanted to try the Turkish Hamam.. the experience and the space/ architecture, both. While looking online and in person, different options, we got this weird, sleazy feel and while reading reviews of most of the hamams in town, we had almost decided not to go ahead with one. In the... More

I read about what to expect at a Haman but this was a great experiece. The building is beautiful inside and outside. This is located right outside Haya Sophia and is definitely geared toward tourists (they speak some English) but that is ok because you still get the Turkish Bath experience. They have a seperatate men's and woman's facility so... More

When reading about having a Turkish Bath/Spa experience, it usually follows comments of having your skin sandpapered off during the body scrub. NOT here. Instead, this beautiful and luxurious experience was sensational from start to finish. The body scrub was gentle to medium, no more than you might loofa for yourself. The Bubble wash ritual was heaven, and my Masseur... More

I've been to hamams all over the world and this one is the shizzle. Gracious, acommodating service. All the options clearly explained, with nothing pushy going on. We opted for the full monty and enjoyed every minute of it. Mud, steam, oil, bubbles, massages, lounging, more massage, Really fun. It also feels good to support this business which is in... More

The experience was not immediately familiar to an American. Being almost naked and uncertain can be uncomfortable. Get over it. If you would let a nurse wash you in the hospital you will let someone wash you here. The difference is that, instead of a moist toilette they cover you in suds and scrub you clean. Discrete, non sexual, warm.... More

This is not a cheap experience, but given the very mixed reviews I saw about hamams in Istanbul in general, I realized I should choose the best and was not disappointed. The interior is very beautiful and the treatment was so relaxing and attentive. I booked a night treatment and had the privilege of being the only one around, really... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
